you'd think! actually written by Ewan MacColl i think, probs in the 50s/60s, most folkies take his original stuff as traditional anyway because it's so so good but yeah it's not as trad as you'd think

@@billyevans395 Incorrect, it is very trad. Ewan MacColl certainly recorded it but Cecil Sharp heard a version of this in a workhouse in I guess the early 1900's. And this is from Nick Hart's 'Eight English Folk Songs'; 'Learned from the singing of Ewan MacColl, this song was collected from a singer called James Sutton in Winterton, Norfolk, by Ernest John Moeran. Moeran was a composer and this is one of a suite of six songs he set to piano accompaniment. I don't normally go in for that sort of thing, but his arrangement is surprisingly inoffensive for the period'. This would be circa 1920.
