Brunei may be one of the richest nations in the world, but financial problems have beset even their royal house. The sultan has recently made moves towards some form of partial democracy. However, it is up to him whether or not he introduces it. Why did he make a move to do so, and then let it drop?

I work in Brunei and if I want to see Brunei Sultan in real life, I will make sure myself will be on road along the Jerudong-Sengkurong-Kilanas coz he will passed around 5pm Once I waved at him thou he drove his Merc so fast still he gave back his friendly hand wave👋 Thank you Brunei Sultan. Peaceful country even at night just for a walk or jog around the town centre...you are so safe. Lots of foreigners saw Brunei so dull, well those whose life always in a fast lane busy hectic crazy life of course will say that!! Those Who want to look for peaceful minimal life just come and stay in Brunei for a while...your sleep will be comforting deep calm sleep. Hey that DrHusseinmiya I read his book.

Personally, I don't care about any country's political systems and what their religions, etc are, but I am interested in whether people of a country can live together prosperously and peacefully. Some people of some countries like to lecture other people of other regions, but their countries are overwhelmed with civil wars, conflicts, political turmoils, etc. I respect our Asean countries and I do respect Brunei. Viva Bruneian people.

I worked in Brunei in 1984 as a Chef Patissier at the Sheraton Hotel. During that time the sultan and his two wifes would visit the hotel several times for a high tea. On their arrival, the head of departments would stand in line to greet the royal family. They never were overbearing and we never felt having to be submissive. It was a pleasure to work and live in Brunei.

Did you know that many centuries ago Brunei and Borneo were the same thing? It was the european that uses 'Borneo' in their old map. Another old map by Ibrahim Muteferikan around 1700CE uses 'Burnui' and labelled the whole island as 'Jazirah Burnui'. On the map there is also Burnui with a landmark resembling huge city not far from the current Brunei. Also there is a lot of Brunei race people in Sabah, Malaysia nowadays. They weren't born in Brunei but speak Brunei language.

I almost wanted to say this was unfair, but then I thought : They have everything we do in first world countries minus income tax. ( free education and healthcare is more then some 1st world countries have honestly ) They have opportunity, and are well off compared to many, many parts of the world. It is no more unfair then people in the first world not being born rich ! I mean it is still the governments money untouchable by the people no matter what, and the people still have all the benefits and more of even the pinnacle of 1st world countries !

Over the years, I have heard nothing but good things about the Sultan of Brunei. He helps, cares and provides for his people, and he is most capable. Most importantly, he is adored by his people, which is far better than I can say for contemporary "leaders" in the West. One of my friend's cousins actually works for the Brunei royal family, and he has always treated everyone he meets with respect, courtesy and grace. Bravo for him!

But the trade-off is not having many civil liberties that you’d have in a democracy. First of all, freedom of religion is limited that you must be careful to not let your practice of faith escape places of worship or private places, And women still face discrimination, and be careful not to get caught with a certain amount of drugs, because like Singapore, you will incur the mandatory death penalty.

Why is it that people always attack the western world? What have we done to be so hated ?? I’m sure if Brunei one day needed the Western world for help from invasion, I have no doubt, the Sultan would ask the Western world for help and I’m sure you would gladly accept the help. Stop blaming the western world for the problems in your country. Goodness. I get tired of reading about the western world being blamed for everything. The thing is, Hassanal Bolkiah is one of those rare good men who can actually be trusted with absolute power. He can have full control of the country and you can trust that he won’t put his own interests above that of his people. Such a structure will always fail when someone not as noble as him is in that position. 95% of people would abuse that power in a heartbeat, so the chances that his successor will abuse the system is very high. The sultan has to abolish the structure of absolute power and find a good alternative before he descends from the throne, because even he knows that his sons cannot fully be trusted
