I had a Hohner B2A as my first real bass way back in 1990. I’ve gone through a lot of basses since but just recently came back and bought a Steinberger Spirit, which I’m loving. It’s works great since I’m playing in a Devo tribute band.

A few years ago CME in Chicago had a pair of Devo replica Be Stiff basses for sale. Pretty unique bass, I can say that..

I had this bass and the block saddles drove me up the wall for setting intonation! Sold it and never regretted it!

I have a fretless version that is a year or two older it has that same issue. In this one, there is a series of allen screws that lock the saddles in place, but you make a really good point, that is a real weakness of this design, and it does impact the intonation which is significantly more noticeable on the fretless one.

thanks for stopping by and commenting they're a really fun bass and they are a much better but for a player looking for a vintage Steinberger clone.

Okay, I think I may have seriously misjudged these based on the context in which I used to hear them. Those pickups are incredible! There's very few bass pickups out there (though Stingrays come to mind) that sound that good both active and passive, and the fullness of the tone threw me for a loop considering how little wood there is.

Although this goes against guitarist's orthodoxy, I'm pretty convinced that most meaningful effect on tone is derived from the pickups and electronics, and the bridge impacts it a bit. I have a bass with a graphite fretboard on an aluminum neck, and it has a pretty live sound with a pair of passive EMGs.

@@offbeatbassgear I completely agree, key word being most. Oh a physics level as it all vibrates it all has some effect, which is why (to me at least) a mahogany guitar sounds slightly different than an equivalent maple or ash one. Either way, well done!

@@astridlenore Oh I agree, there's a really interesting video clip that Phil McKnight filmed several years ago with Neal Moser, the designer and builder from Bernie Rico's BC Rich. He addressed this somewhat in a comment on BC Rich measuring sustain in four guitars, all identically equipped, but a neck-through, set-neck, bolt-on and hollow. He rated them all based on sustain, but did show that the differences were really very difficult to measure and really hard to hear..
