Kaumakaiwa Kanaka‘ole expresses the true meaning of hula from a native Hawaiian perspective on the island of Hawai'i.
Kanaka‘ole is a force of nature. She’s won multiple Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards, which are Hawai'i's highest musical honor, and has traveled the world performing. Her transcendent voice comes from one of Hawai'i's most esteemed lineages, so the primal power of Hula is in her blood. Her great-grandmother, Edith Kanaka‘ole, was a pioneering leader during the Hawaiian Renaissance of the ’60s and ’70s. Her grandmother, Pualani Kanaka'ole Kanahele is a Ph.D. and Kumu Hula (hula teacher). Her mother, Kekuhi Kanahele-Frias is also a Hōkū award-winning artist and educator.
She calls herself a hula haka, or hula medium - the means in which hula moves through. It’s a way for her to connect to her legacy, and more importantly, to the land. She defines hula as the constant rhythm that occurs in nature. Hula is movement at its most primal. For native Hawaiians, hula is a bridge to authenticity and identity.
Kaumakaiwa defines oli (chant) as vocal or harmonic alchemy, or the ability to manifest change in your environment. Hula facilitates the connection between her and the land and reaffirms her commitment as a native Hawaiian.

All people should love their homeland as much as these people do. Polynesians spirituality is very beautiful to me It is as beautiful and life-affirming as their homeland. May Polynesians have full independence someday.

Well, I came here because in a part of my dream, there was a part of pure nature with a huge tree root swinging, blocking passage. There is a "worker" (idk how to describe it, cause it's like a huge park of sorts) who would stop the tree for us (me, mostly, cause it's my second time there) To get the tree to keep swinging, they will pull till it swings again, and then there's music, somewhat of a ritual for the first time there, I only noticed it's a ritual. last night (2nd time there), I paid more attention to the dance/music/ritual taking note of the appearance of the "worker" and how they dress, I made a note "Polynesian rain dance" So when I woke, I came to youtube to search for a vid of it, and IT IS EXACTLY THE SAME AS IN MY DREAMS. Which is weird, I never new this was a thing, never heard of it or saw it before so...

Today is the first day of the Hula workshop with Kaumakaiwa Kanakaʻole organized by „No ka hoʻomanaʻo ana ia Berlin“ (kzbin.info ) in Berlin, Germany. As a hālau far from the islands we are always grateful for such true Aloha from Hawaiʻi. In October 1824 the first Hula was danced in Berlin by Harry Maitey (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Maitey ).
