Corruption implies with the introduction of Phazon Metroids that one of the Metroids the Pirates brought with them mutated into a Phazon Metroid, gained the ability to phase through the Chozo barrier surrounding the impact crater, mutated further into a Hopping Metroid, lost it's ability to phase and got trapped inside. It kept feeding on the Phazon inside until in mutated further into the Metroid Prime.

The simple explination to why Metroid Prime Remaster is a Remaster and not a Remake is becuase they only gave in new textures, while keeping the gameplay, the game's story & the game porgrssion completly unchanged. A game that only has gotten upscaled or redone graphics, but nothing much eles is, (regardless) of how much of a leap the graphics are, (always) a remaster. A Remake is like like Resident Evil 2 Remake, new stuff while keeping mostly the core of the story tried and true.
