Great facial expressions Tori! So the grandfather is not supposed to be Westley, although you can certainly interpret the movie in that way if you want. "As you wish" means "I love you" in this movie. He's telling his grandson that he loves him, which is still the sweetest, most wholesome way to end a movie that I've ever seen.

@valashar5313
@valashar5313 Жыл бұрын
While obviously the grandfather is not Westley, my take on this is that this family IS the descendants of Westley and Buttercup. Consider that all kids eventually wonder about their parent's histories. The story starts out as just another 'how I met your mother/father' that because of how purely epic the tale is gets told again and again. Eventually it's written down to preserve for posterity and then a few generations later gets published. The copy of the book the grandfather reads looks like it could be a first edition, perhaps even THE first copy. And thus is the story preserved.

In that final sword fight with the 6 fingered man, Mandy Patinkin was channeling his grief over losing his own father to cancer when he was only 18. So that line, "I want my father back you son of a bitch!" was heartfelt. Years later, 2021, Mandy confirmed this rumor when a fan reached out with a video after losing her own father to cancer and how that line resonated with her now after her loss. Patinkin responded to the video, confirming that it was true. "First of all, your dad is taking care of you. Secondly, it is true. 100% true,". "From the minute I read the script, I said I'm gonna do this part because in my mind, if I get the six-fingered guy (his father's murderer) that means I kill the cancer that killed my dad."

One little detail I love about the Inigo fight with Count Rugen that a lot of people miss is that in addition to the cheek cuts that he makes, there's more. All of the wounds he gives him mirror the ones Rugen gives to Inigo during the fight. There's the stabs in the shoulder and armpit area and the coup de grace is where Rugen threw the dagger into Inigo's gut.

The girl that played Buttercup says Andre the Giant was really sweet, but in a funny way sometimes. She says one time, the crew went horseback riding when they had some time off from shooting and got caught in freezing rain on their way back. She says that Andre saw her shivering and placed his hand on her head like a hat. She says that aside from it warming her up and keeping the rain off her surprisingly well, the gesture made her feel safe.

No, the voice of Augrah in the Dark Crystal was Billie Whitelaw. Modern audiences may best recognize her as the small-town-hotel receptionist in the action comedy Hot Fuzz (2007). This movie did not do well at the box office when it first came out. The young unknown actors remained unknown and continued to struggle to find work. Years later, Cary Elwes (Wesley) was in New York City going from audition to audition and stopped in a Diner for some lunch. He ordered a hamburger. The waitress asked him how he wanted it cooked. He said, "medium rare." She smiled and said, "As you wish." That's how Cary found out that the movie was doing much better as a video tape rental than it had in theaters...

This movie is based on an actual book called "The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure, The "Good Parts" Version " by William Goldman and it's the fictional story about how Goldman's father (grandfather in the movie) read The Princess Bride to him when he was a child, but it was later when he read it himself as a adult he found out that the book was atrociously long and boring, so he did for others what his father had done. He wrote an abridged version of the book, leaving out the boring stuff of Florinese history, 20 pages of stuff nobody cares about like everything a woman packs in her luggage, 2 pages of her trip, then another 23 pages of her unpacking everything she just packed 2 pages ago. He inserts paraprhasing of what he "cut" along the way (in my copy these annotations were in red.) There is also more than happens at the end we don't see in the movie, exactly because we are seeing it as the child, not as the adult. The way they kept that framing and therefore left out the "true" ending is one of the things that makes the movie truly a perfect take on the book. It's basically a parody of Lord of the Rings and other insanely long books like it. You definitely should check out the book, as it's one of the few movies I've seen that truly lives up to the book, and that's another reason I think as a movie it's stood the test of time. Funny enough, for a couple years after reading the book in a college fantasy literature class (this was in 1996 when the internet was in it's infancy) I wanted to read the original... Couldn't find it and that's when I finally realized there is no such book as "The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure."

Great reaction as usual you two. So glad you watched this classic. The theme behind the theme was sometimes as young kids we don't see grandparents as fun. The whole story you can see the grandson getting more and more invested in the story and how his grandpa tells the tale. He realizes how wonderful it is to hear the tale told by his grandpa. It hits in the end as when the grandson asks his grandpa to come back and read. As one commenter said, like "as you wish" was grandpa telling his grandson I love you but so great it was line from story. This is a beautiful movie about love and that our grandparents bring vast amounts of knowledge and lore to our lives. They are our are history :)

My favorite RttM ladies watching my favorite movie? Sign me up cos I'm here for it! And, yeah, I'm here for Tori's facial expressions. 😀 Love your reactions! And Hannah's pouts are just too cute too. 🙂 Great zoom work to the editing team too. 🙂 Some of my fondest memories relate to this movie. When I was 22 I met a young woman and started a long distance relationship with her as she lived in NY State and I lived in Tennessee (I met her when she was in town visiting her aunt, uncle, and cousins who I vaguely knew through friends of mine). We loved this movie and watched it frequently when I, on a whim, moved up to live near her for the winter (literally made the decision after working a double one night, stayed up all night packing, and drove the 14 hours north the next morning. I was impulsive). We would quote it back and forth to each other often, and always enjoyed it. The relationship lasted three years, but we're still great friends now 30 years later, and we'll still drop lines from this movie into our conversations. 😀 When my best friend got married when I was 25, I was the best man and two of our friends were groomsmen. We were standing around at the rehearsal in our spots the day before the wedding when one of the groomsmen suddenly said, "Mawwiage." Both groomsmen and I burst out laughing, but the next day during the ceremony we couldn't make eye contact with each other, or even look in each other's direction for fear that we'd burst out laughing thinking "Mawwaige." 😀 Grandpa's "As you wish." still brings a tear to my eye at the end of the movie. He wasn't Westley of course, just using his way of saying "I love you." to his grandson and telling him he'd be back to read the book the next day. Such an awesome movie on so many levels! I also love that the entire swordfight was done by Cary Elwes (Westley) and Mandy Patinkin (Inigo), except for Westley's gymnastic leap from the heights. They practiced and practiced so hard for that and they made it look amazing! Cary Elwes wrote a memoir of making the movie called "As You Wish" that is a wonderful read. Highly recommended!

I have two favorite lines (one from the movie and one that was only in the book). Movie: Westley: "In a few minutes we'll be safe in the Fire Swamp." Buttercup: "We'll never survive." Westley: "Nonsense. You're only saying that because no one ever has." Westley delivered that last line without a hint of exaggeration or irony. He really meant that nobody else would survive, but he was 100% positive that they would. Book quote: "Life isn't fair, it's just fairer than death, that's all."

So much background in this movie. Robin Wright who played Buttercup is married to Sean Penn. Chris Sarandon who played Humperdinck is Susan Sarandon’s brother. Peter Falk who played the Grandfather was Columbo in the TV series. Fred Savage the grandson was the main character in The Wonder Years TV Series. Cary Elwes, farm boy / pirate, played Robin Hood, Men In Tights among several famous movies. Billy Crystal who played Miracle Max was on Saturday Night Live, City Slickers, When Harry Met Sally. Carol Kane played his wife, most remembered for her part as the pixie in Bill Murray’s movie Scrooged. She was hilarious. Need to read stories from behind the scenes on this movie.

I love this movie... everything about it. Having said that... high points for me- Fezzik. Literally everything about his character. Inigo's revenge. If you ever get to see Mandy Patinkin speak about his role here- it was shortly after his father died of cancer. He nailed the feeling. I love that it was told as a story being told to the sick kid. It's such a creative way to tell the story. And Carol Kane as Miracle Max's wife... she's a delight in everything she does.

OMG the cat! Isn't she gorgeous! Fun bit of music and film trivia: Mark Knopfler was Rob Reiner's first and only pick for the soundtrack composer, so the project really depended on getting him involved. (And, I mean, fair enough; it's an incredible soundtrack.) At the time, though, Mark got Rob's hopes up and then scared him by saying he'd do it, but that he had one condition that would absolutely have to be met. Luckily it was just that the black and gold trucker hat from This Is Spinal Tap had to have a cameo, so that's why it's on the shelf behind the kid's bed!

Thanks for the great reaction. The Princess Bride is a brilliant comedic novel, the screenplay for the movie was written by the author of the novel. The conceit of the novel is that 'The Princess Bride' is a boring novel about Florin court politics so the grandfather is taking elements and making up the quirky story we see in the film. There are even more layers to the satire if you want to read the book by William Goldman. So, it is an interesting question whether the grandfather is Wesley since he is making up the story as he goes.

I really enjoyed your reaction to what is probably my favorite movie of all time. I noticed that Tori reacted rather strongly to the beginning of the swordfight. It is probably one of the best if not the best swordfighting scene in any movie. You might be interested to know that there were no stuntmen filmed creating the whole swordfighting scene. Mandy Patinkin & Cary Elwes actually went through months of grueling training to be able to create such a fantastic swordfighting scene themselves without using any stunt doubles. They felt it would take away from the realism to use stuntmen so they learned how to do it all themselves! That is dedication!
