Thank you for this informative video! It's difficult to describe to those who have no experience with string instruments what to look for and why low-quality workmanship and materials are so problematic. As a middle school orchestra director, I would also add some very common problems I've seen in VSOs that are immediately detrimental to the student's success: bow sticks that are crooked, necks that are misaligned (This will also cause students to develop a warped muscle memory from the start!), fingerboards that are not ebony and splinter in student's hands and/or warp, that sharp nut you explained also causes strings to break almost immediately! Finally, one of the worst problems with VSOs that survive a even few months is that the wood used to make them was not properly cured or dried, so they begin to literally come apart at the seams, especially in our dry, high-desert climate where I live. As you said, they are just WASTEFUL.

This may seem bizarre but I think the beginning student’s first purchase should be their bow, and if possible one the caliber of a CodaBow prodigy. They are likely to keep that bow through a progression of instruments as they develop finesse and intonation. During that time I strongly believe students should rent high quality instruments from shops that often apply a portion of timely rental payments to eventual purchase of their first (intermediate) violin. I didn’t really hear undertones and overtones until I found my Jay Haide violin at Goodwill for $650. A new one costs about $2500. When finally I could play with nuance I had no reservations about buying a handmade violin about $3500 and a Marquis bow about $1300. If I regret anything spent along the way it’s money spent on three other violins and bows that now never leave their cases. Fortunately all are heirloom quality and appreciate in value.

Of course, don't forget if your instrument comes with the bridge not installed, you'll most likely need to reset the soundpost, too
