Good point! Personally I see the model/skater girls as posers, but the people giving them attention are a big part of the problem too. There are a ton of amazing female skaters who don’t feel the need to show their bodies to get clout, and I think they deserve the attention way more than the girls merely using skateboarding as a tool to gain a following.

not that, I was born into a community where feminine people are born into getting glorified. It was more justice for women than it was justice for equality. In my area and possibly many other areas the masculine population are always jealous of the feminine population. Generally it all depends on what I think of the girl skater or how bad of a day I was having before I go snapping at a girl skater.

So i'm a girl and i started skating like 5 months ago, and i have friends that have skated for YEARS, so the thing is that they always teased me like "haha Skater girl" and it just annoys me, so i just started getting better and this time they actually cheered me on going to skateparks and stuff but recently i fractured my ankle while skating so they started to make fun of me *again* with things like "i've never needed a cast in my 4 years of skating" "you fell because you're a girl and you're too weak" So i'm happy to see videos like these where the appreciation for beginner skater girls is really cool, the video is amazing and really encouraged me to keep skating after my ankle is healed, so thanks for actually making it!

James Kelch never skated at the same level as the other well-known EMB dudes. He was known primarily for his image, as well. Well, I'd call it personality more than image. That old Real ad of him covered in blood after a fight is a perfect example. And I would never say that means he's not as good of a skateboarder, because skateboarding is about a lot of things first and foremost, with athletic prowess being somewhere down the list. Nobody ever expected Elissa Steamer to skate at the same level as the dudes, we were just happy that there was a woman skating and that she was a rad person. A lot of very talented skaters never went anywhere in the industry because they couldn't kick it with any team, they just weren't cool. Andy Mac was just so uncool he actually got known for it, proving novelty is also an important factor.
@morgellon9449
@morgellon9449 2 жыл бұрын
@@berran3459 We hate on it becoming a trend because trends are by their nature vacuous and fickle, neither of which skateboarding is. Skateboarding is so much more than the physical act of skating, and that even includes image. Image is huge in "core" skating; pros have to have a marketable image because the ams are typically the ones pushing the limits of what is considered possible on a skateboard, and it's been that way for decades. We'll always remember The Muska, even though there's a thousand kids today who nobody will ever hear about who can do everything he ever did, much of it switch. Of course, a lot of it has to do with being cool. The Muska was simply cool, and made a lot of cool friends. Elissa Steamer was cool. There's a lot of very talented skaters who never went anywhere simply because they couldn't kick it. Andy Mac basically had to be the biggest kook in the universe to make a career in skating, despite his amazing skills, and we love him for it because at least he's not out trying to divide skateboarders between "core" and "kook" skaters just to sell Revenge boards to his youtube fans.

Girl skaters getting featured because of their looks isn’t necessarily a problem with the skaters themselves. Girls get featured in many things specifically due to their looks so it’s just more of that, but in skating. Some girls have learned to take advantage of this to gain a following , and I’m not mad at them for it. They’re just playing the game. Either way tho I feel like shit talking the girls that are featured doesn’t help anyone. It dissuades girls who are genuinely interested in putting work into skating from starting, because they see people close to their skill level getting hassled online. I feel like the best way to show that you want better skaters featured, is to give those posts as little engagement as possible. Also if you find a girl skater that you think should be featured, support them and share their stuff.

When I started skateboarding in 2002, there was pretty much no or little coverage of womens skateboarders. I had to push for my spot into the scene, I had to sign in on my first contest with a fake name because they refused women on it, I couldnt find shoes sponsors because they had no budjet for a woman, peoples were bugging us at the park etc. I saw others womens getting sponsors, they were talented skateboarders and I was happy and proud of them but they had to have the look because it was part of the marketing plan. Using all you have to be notice is part of the business. You eighter do the bigest rails, the must technical trix, the best sk8style, funny videos, you are also a rapper or you have a certain trendy look that fit the brand. It alwais been like that. funny how both sides of the issue are due to sexism: on one side, either women are viewed as worse skateboarders in general or their skills are devalued in the public eye because they don’t fit the expectations of the male gaze. while on the other side, women receive attention for their skateboarding that is centered around sexualization/objectification and not skill level. either way, women are the ones who get the worse deal here and to me the way forward is to address sexism and patriarchy in skateboarding, especially the men in skateboarding who criticize women receiving attention for their attractiveness and don’t recognize or unpack their own sexism.

All again about blaming the other side instead of acknowledging, that a lot of attention seeking girls are using everything they can to be recognised and make a living out of it. Stop blaming always the patriarchy, girls are not the innocent holy Maria’s you like to make em look like.

@@unpanecito3429 when you talk about feminism you aren't purely reducing it to genes, there's undeniably societal factors that lead to the male-female rift. like, yes, those people are rude, don't know how you can deny those rude people are under the influence of sexism. the people objectifying women in skateboarding aren't just doing it bc they're "rude", well they are but there's more to play than that

Any amount of coverage girl skaters get is no sweat off my back. I think it's cool and would support it. About girls who don't care about skating and gain an audience just from their looks.. well I do think it's lame. And they would be considered a poser in that case. But it's not like any amount of complaining will do anything about that so, it sucks and can take away from girl skaters that do actually care but it is what it is. Attractive girls will gain an audience no matter what they try to do tbh. I'm just happy that skating is so widely accepted. More ppl taking on the sport is cool with me, guy or girl. As long as you're not a poser you'll have my respect for picking up skating. 👌

You’re 100%, you just have a pretty high IQ. This is the biggest crock I’ve ever heard. I was there 10 years ago when they were no opportunities for girls and guess what everybody said? The Director of ESPN came out in an article&felt comfortable enough to say publicly that the problem was that girl skaters just weren’t pretty. Those were his exact words. I made a petition to get girl bowl riders back in the xfames, many of us fighting until the girls were back in. Leticia who broke the glass ceiling and started making real opportunities for girls, guess what she had to do? She did a n00d shoot. Back in the days you literally you would not be featured at all unless you were pretty. Cue the thrasher girl section, the creature girls, I could go on and on. Girls literally pretty much were groomed by the industry. And now you’re gonna sit here and tell us the fact that we’re doing what the industry said would get us back in- it is a problem? Just come out with it. You don’t want girls in your scene. Grow some and say that.

I feel like social media didn’t help. Over saturation of the industry, clout chasers, skateboarding clickbait, male, female and non-binary. I think people’s frustration stems from the fact that skateboarding isn’t what it used to be, especially if you’ve been skating for 25+ yrs. I love female skaters, always have, if they’re just trying to skate and don’t care about the likes everyone’s okay in my book. It annoys me when shots of girl skaters or just girls modeling with the board are made to look sexy to appeal to horny guys who skate (a big consumer demo for magazines and videos). Makes people take girl skaters less serious so they get hate and so do other girl skaters (either bc they “should be hot like the girl skaters on videos and mags” or bc “you’re just posing- you’re like those girls who pose for magazines when they can’t really skate blahblahblah”).

Simple fix here people... Know the difference between a skateboarder and the rest of the world. Then act accordingly. Live and let live, and know that an actual skater is one who skates, and the rest are using a board as a prop. Whatever. If a pulchritudinous girl in a bikini decided to iron a shirt online, people would still watch. In those cases there is no difference between a skateboard and the ironing board, and no difference between the girls using the different boards.

I actually only agree with one of these arguments and that is the girls being featured basically because they are attractive. As a female who grew up in the action sports/skating culture, It's honestly disappointing to see girls who work so hard and have insane talent be thrown underground by a girl skater who isn't that good but has good looks. I'm not saying that being pro only depends on skill level. I think with social media now, having a good personality is especially important and companies want to sponsor the people that people want to watch.
