The Problem with Licensed LEGO Themes

LEGO not coming up with original themes defeat the purpose of their message of creativity

Sometimes I'm not sure how much creativity some kids put into their leg o builds. I go to some kids house and they have a great collection of Legos but just all instruction built. I got a room full of stuff you would never sea in stores and even things that are mostly instruction built are modified.

I wholeheartedly agree. Legos old school castle and pirate themes were my favorite when I was a little kid... Trying to find those old sets has been very difficult.I find there's a huge appeal in some of the Lego idea themes but they are also entirely way too expensive. Lego, if you are reading this, it is time to reboot all old themes including the old sets and bring them back at a much cheaper price.. otherwise I might be going to AliExpress to get my fake Legos

That's why most of my money goes to EBay to find the classic caste and other stuff Lego has stopped making. If Lego won't give me what I would like then I'll take my money elsewere.

I can agree that they go overboard on the licensed themes a lot of times, but they also have interesting creator sets, technic sets, architecture, etc. I would love to see a return of classic Legoland space, but until then, they can keep making cool ships for Benny.

When lego starts doing original themes again, do a list of what themes you think they should do(they can both be themes that should be bought back and your ideas for original themes they have not done before).

Ok, since no one in two weeks has suggested what themes Lego should bring back and what new themes they should do, here are my suggestions for original, Lego themes. Classic themes to be bought back: .Castle .Pirates .Western .Adventurers New original theme ideas they haven't done before: .Ancient Greece - A Greco-Roman theme set in Ancient Greece, that incorporates Greek and Roman mythology. So the characters will be fighting monsters like hydras, minotaurs, cyclopes, gorgons and chimeras. .Antarctica - An original, action theme set in the continent of Antarctica, as a group of explores travel into the very depths of the South Pole. Perhaps because there is a hidden treasure there they want, or perhaps they find the remains of an ancient, Antarctic civilisation. Either way, they have to fight ice monsters along the way. .Europa - A hybrid between a space and underwater theme(like the unreleased Seatron theme from the early 1990s). Set in the not too distant future when astronauts drill through the icy surface of Jupiter's moon, Europa, and discover it is full of underwater, alien life. Perhaps there are ferocious sea monsters there they need to fight to survive. Perhaps there are intelligent aliens there. Maybe the intelligent aliens are hostile to the humans, or perhaps there is a war going there between two alien factions, and the humans have to pick a side. .Super Soldiers - A theme about a tyrannical mastermind who wants to take over the world and starts a World War 3, using weapons of mass destruction. In response, an army of super soldiers is created, using highly advanced technology to stop him and save the world. Those are my ideas for what they should do. What are yours?

LEGO doing liscensed themes is like the lego equivalent of Disney making live action remakes. They keep creating models of things that already exist, knowing they will sell, instead of coming up with new stuff.

I think Lego should reboot exo force. Considering all the mechs they do these days that theme could reely work.

Licence themes limit creativity cause the sets are all based on something that already exsist. The problem is new classic and non licence themes take more brainstorming to come up with and it is taking the risk that it may not sell well. Look at Chima or nexo knights and then compare it to star wars and batman. If Lego would brainstorm more we would get new non licence themes but sense licence themes are easyer to come up with and they are relatable for people cause big movie are the hype they keep making them . Lego hasn't done a reel original theme that will last long since ninjago cause characters like ironman' Darth Vader and Batman are more likely to get attention then a new guy with no back story they hope will do good.

Have you seen the TopTens list of the Lego themes that need to be made? It is terrible! At best, it is so bad its funny and has the occasional good idea, and at worst, it is a complete catastrophe. There are 441 entries on the list, and out of them, I counted only 34 original themes, and 407 licensed themes. Not just that, most of the licensed theme ideas were TERRIBLE! While there were a few good ones, like Halo, Star Trek and James Bond (which I think are all great ideas), most of them were either too childish or too mature. The worst example of the first being Fanboy and Chum Chum, which is a bad show, when the worst example of the second being Saw. A LEGO SAW! That is like a Lego Human Centipede. Not just that, the original theme ideas sucked as well. The one which made me laugh was a Lego NORTH KOREA! Imagine them making a set of a North Korean prison camp! There was also a Lego The Squirrel And The Hedgehog, which is a North Korean propaganda cartoon. That is like making a Lego The Triumph Of The Will!

I´m in both sides I think licensed stuff is the best thing that happend to lego of course except the new crappy lego star wars and avengers sets because they are too repetitive but other themes like disney cmf ,e,t.(dimensions ),teen titans(dimesions awesome raven and beast boy),the simpsons,sponge bob, the goonies(dimensions),stranger things, the first marvel sets,flintstones,angry birds, scooby doo, the first toy story,power puff girls, the incredibles,minions, adventure time , sonic, portal, etc. but there are other awesome original lego sets like fabuland( my favorite),city,hidden side,chima(unlike the popular opinion i like chima ,the minifigres obviusly the builds no)ninjago( new awesome pieces), the lego movie 1 and 2, nexo knights (the lava and rock villains) and orient expedition

The problem is again, there are way to many licensed themes and way to few original themes. And yes, I agree, the new Star Wars and Avengers sets are crappy and repetitive indeed.

Lego star wars works pretty well, but lego minions, lego overwatch, lego angry birds movie, and even lego super mario are a bit excessive. They hog spots for better licensed or original themes. I don't think the problem is the licenses itself, its the type that is the problem.

For some reason, I always thought that for a Lego licensed theme to be good, it has to be based on a life action movie, not something cartoony like an animated movie, animated tv show or video game. Themes like Star Wars and Indiana Jones always appealed to be, but Cars and Spongebob never did.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but!? The reality is that original themes don't sell as much as license do. For a good example look at the 2019 press report... half of the best selling themes were licensed. Including, yours truly "star wars." Ninjago and hidden side didn't even make the cut. Plus the lego movie 2 failed at the box office and failed to sell sets now... there getting massively clearance out. It's no secret you don't like how things are going but that's just life. Some times things just don't go your way.☹️

Yeah gotta face the facts. I like licence themes and sence castle/fantasy is one of my top interests I'm glad I can get Harry Potter and modify them for my castle builds. There's always EBay and stuff for that other stuff I can't find annymore. Licence themes are still Legos of course so I can still find good pieces. I always build and modify my owne stuff.

They don't sell because people want LEGO, they sell because people want the IP toy. If you're nothing without licenses to sell your wares, you don't deserve them.

But the problem is that there are too many of them. Sure, some of them are cool, but a lot of them feel pointless, and all they do put a blocker on new original themes.

Lego David oh yeah besides it blocks ur imagination by already making you know how to play with licensed lego sets.
