Something I want in pets is a wander mode. Currently cats and dogs either sit or follow you. Sometimes I want the pets to preform actions without explicitly following me.

Fantastic idea, that would add a lot of character and variation between pets as well. Cats are wandering souls at heart, dogs might stay a little closer.

I actually don’t tame cats and parrots but only give them name tags so they can wander around in their room/house Having a wander mode would be perfect

I really love the suggestions for personality and especially attack patterns. Players could really stand for their cherished pets to have some level of survival instinct.

Dogs really do need an update pass to become more useful. I love the texture packs that add different breeds of dogs visually but I agree with all these ideas. I think the most we could hope for tho would be adding the more advanced combat AI. That would really be nice, no more lost Doggos because it picked a fight with an enderman.

I feel like this could be a great addition to the trails and tales update since the team's main focus was letting the player tell their own story and with more customizable options it could give another thing they want the player to have in minecraft: a sense of individuality

I have been playing since 2012 dogs were cool then when that was the only animal you could tame but now compared to other tameable animals they aren't as cool anymore

I think dogs need more personality, but they can't do much while sitting and they always stay close by the player when standing, you can't just have you dogs wander and play throughout your base at the moment, which is why I suggest a third mode that dogs can be in, when sitting they don't move, when standing they follow close behind you, but when they are in "wandering mode" they'll have the freedom to move where ever they want in a certain area, free to chase each other, drink from water, lay down somewhere, eat something they're not supposed to, ect. You could have dogs with so much personality and not have to worry about them leaving your base and getting hurt.

Willing to bet people here are allergic to mods so not what anyone here wants to hear but anyways... Doggy Talents is a forge mod ancient as time itself and still updated to the latest versions of the game. It addresses pretty much all concerns about dogs and it's wild to see how it has survived almost the entire history of the game. Guess people do love dogs. Can't imagine playing with the bland limitations of the vanilla game.

A tamed wolf is called a dog in most of the official guides and such, so I just call them dogs. You're technically right though :)

I really like the concept of personality in mobs. It would be kind of cool if we could have it implemented in other mobs. I saw a concept before from a SimplySarc video that suggested hostile mobs could have something like a 2% chance to just simply not care about you until you attack them first. I think small things like this in certain areas of the game could really breathe a bit more life into it.
