The Problem With Mob Psycho Season II

I've finally made a video about an anime. I've been dying to get into video essay creation as I'm someone who develops very strong opinions on the entertainment I consume. I'm an avid anime watcher, so starting with a classic like Mob Psycho 100 felt right to me. Hopefully, my hard work paid off and you guys enjoy what I have to say about the adaptation of season 2's penultimate fight.

I really liked this video, as a Mob fan myself, I haven't read the manga yet so I was unaware of these issues. I've heard the Mogami arc is better in the manga tho, might give it a try. This is a really well done video essay, the only thing that I think could be added is some music that matches what you're saying, I think that would add a lot to it. Great work!

thank you for the suggestion! I'll look into adding music to make for a more enjoyable experience. Also you should 100% read the manga, even starting at the Mogami arc would give a better characterization of mob in my opinion.

I remembered the Mogami arc in the anime as this brutal drag out parallel world episode but when I rewatched it last year i was relived if not disappointed to discover it only takes up a precious few minutes. It’s nice to know this has more depth in the manga

The depth in the manga really made mobs growth believable. I highly recommend reading the manga for a more rounded story and characterization of mob. Don't be thrown off by the art, it improves greatly by the Keiji Mogami arc and even adds to the enjoyment of the series due to its unique style and fun fluidity.

Anime only here, tho I felt such decline in characterization and general pacing instantly. IMO the whole first half was still pretty good in my opinion, as, especially during the time mob was literally getting mocked/bullied while trying to save that possessed girl, it was one of the most powerful moments in the series to me, in terms of overall message. But yeah, world domination wrap up felt waaaay too much like what mob (and one punch, in a sense) was parodying all this time (aka generic shounen anime)... felt almost like it was trying way too hard to be "one step ahead of it", when in reality it just ended up being a more underwhelming rendition of the genre, with no clever or funny (like in s1's ending) twists whatsoever. s3 was an easy 10/10 tho, and salvaged pretty damn well the mistakes of the previous one. and the finale was a perfect wrap-up to the whole package imo. dunno, ig what gives the most on s2's issues was the quite big contrast between the unpredictability of s1 and 3's event against its own... unlike w the other 2, I could tell almost everything that'd happen before it did, and to a wild anime like mob is, it sorta goes against its whole appeal.

Completely agree, I didn't watch season 3 yet so I can't speak on that (I read the manga tho and it was great!). The first half of season two was great, I only truly saw the decline at the Mogami Arc as the memories I had of that arc when reading the manga felt like a pale imitation in the anime. It wasn't bad at all, but it wasn't as good as the manga for sure. I think the reason the world domination arc felt like a generic Shonen is because it focused too much on the battle in the anime. The manga teetered on shounen, but it really was a character study of mob and a display of his changes over the series as a whole.

@@Mookiluv it does sound a lot better than it was in the anime for sure. And it always felt weird to me that the whole deal w mob's pent up emotions was only really explored to its fullest in s3, when in reality s2 had the one fight with the most stakes, by far. S3 is def worth a watch tho, it completely restored my very positive opinion on the anime as a whole, by like its first half already. Animation and especially direction are absolutely top notch as well (animation isnt as god tier as 1 and 2, but its so well directed and written overall you dont even notice it). All in all, couldnt ask for a better ending to it.
