The Problem with Pixar Sequels

I think that they need to step up and make something that people will want to go to the cinema to watch, just like what Puss In Boots and TMNT did with the Spider-Verse style animation

They've still got some of that Pixar magic. They haven't released a movie as bad as Cars 2 before or since. I loved Inside Out, for example. Coco and Soul look really nice, and Elemental really proved naysayers wrong when it almost earned 2.5x its budget instead of becoming a box office bomb. Cars 3 was a noticeable improvement over Cars 2 and actually felt connected to Cars 1 However, the Toy Story 5 announcement makes me think that they haven't quite passed their sequel phase yet, and that's probably because TS4 earned them another billion at the box office. I wouldn't even be surprised to hear a Cars 4 announcement, given that series has earned about $20 billion in merchandise. That puts Cars in the realm of Star Wars and DBZ. Out of all of their movies, TS and Cars are by far and away the most milked, and the box office results of Lightyear and Cars 3 tell me that people are getting pretty burned out on these 2 series. Look at how much better Minions and The Bad Guys performed over Cars 3 and Lightyear (respectively). I get that Cars and TS are the 2 highest-grossing and presumably the most popular media franchises that Pixar owns. But, they need to stop releasing Cars and TS sequels. They could just as easily continue both series as Disney+ and even theatrical shorts or spin-offs instead of the obligatory sequels. Something like The TS House of Terror or Cars on the Road is fine just to keep fans engaged.

@@TheDr502 I think you are right! I would rather have a Disney + show with small funny moments around the toys, and give us some moments that we can enjoy. But for them to make more sequels, just feels like they want an excuse to get more money out of the franchise. And it's sad that it is that way, cause it lowkey destroyed a lot of fans' perspectives on the Franchises…:(

tell me about it. the last shot of 3 was the clouds just like the ones on andys wallpaper & thats how the first one all started. it was the perfect finale. the shorts & tv specials after that were awesome but not a fourth movie. it made no sense at all 4 bonnie 2 4get woody after toy story that time 4got. she was all over him in that, toy story of terror & the three shorts like andy was & then she just plays with a damn fork she made, leaves him in her closet & doesnt even realize hes gone at the end. it was totally ooc. nobody would ever play with a damn fork over a real toy like him & she shouldve been devastated he was gone like andy in the first movie. im not even gonna bother seeing the fifth damn movie. its an even bigger cash grab

Toy Story 4 was not created to tell another story, it was created solely for profit and awards. I can even tell that the people at Pixar didn’t want to do this film, either. The only people who wanted the fourth film are the big wigs at Disney. Besides, if they wanted another Incredibles movie, they should’ve put one into production right away.

I always hate that people blame Pixar for decisions clearly made by Disney. Pixar has the hands tied on their back when it comes to these things. The sequels are ordered by Disney to make money. And we can expect more sequels soon 'cause Disney ain't in a good financial spor right now.

Not only that. They also do films that are unnecessary such as that God awful Turning Red film (that was full of inappropriate moments, has no idea how people talked and/or acted in the early 2000's (which, btw as a guy who grew up in that time, I would know), and has some awful animation moments). That film alone made me cancel ever doing a worst teen movie list _purely_ because I never want to review a single second of that _garbage!_

Agree with all the points made here. However, my opinion on Cars 2 has changed over the years. While it may be a completely and totally insane concept, it was at least fun and original! When you compare Cars 2 to other Pixar and Disney Animation sequels that are clearly JUST focused on recapturing the original to make more money, you realize that it was least written with a unique idea and style in mind. It’s a fun movie and I honestly enjoy watching it for what it is.

something I remembered while editing this video was that when I was a kid I never really thought that Cars 2 was a bad movie. remember watching it in the cinemas, and actually had a great time. I think that this movie, just shows that people can force an opinion on you if they just speak loudly enough…. cause I think we as a community just agreed that “Cars 2 is bad”

The irony for me is that I didn't like Cars 3 or Planes: Fire and Rescue when they came out, in sharp contrast to how I loved Cars 2 and Planes back in the day. My Consensus on Cars 3 and Planes 2 improved over time, though, while Cars 2 and Planes 1 kinda became more mixed over time. Now, I rank the whole Cars franchise similar to how Rotten Tomatoes ranks the Cars and Planes movies from worst to best: Planes, Cars 2, Planes: Fire and Rescue, Cars 3, and Cars

To be fair, it wasnt really people hating the Supers, it was the Cops and they weren't legally allowed to fight, dont forget that information wasnt digital in the time period or fast so the defending of the Omnidroid wasnt known by everyone and it wasnt spread to the entire city & beyond and also they have different disguises so people dont know the family are them, nobody knew the kids were fighting against that robot either so it conplicates things even further.

While I do agree that so many sequels are a problem and get old real quick, I don't think that many Pixar sequels are that bad. It's too bad that Pixar is just afraid to go original lately and considering how people are just hellbent on throwing hate to literally everything new that comes out, it's probably hard to make anything in media these days.

To me, Dreamworks may have Pixar beat in sequels, spin-offs, and worldbuilding overall, but Pixar is better than Dreamworks regarding one type of sequel: Third installments. Dreamworks' third installments are about as consistent as Pixar's luck with second installments, whereas although Pixar has made only 2 threequels (Toy Story 3 and Cars 3), they either rival (Cars 3) or exceed the first film (Toy Story 3), due to a crucial element which Dreamworks usually lacks or does poorly (at least when compared to Pixar): A sense of finality. You can watch Pixar's Third Installments and pretend the franchise ended there and then, because they are so good and heartfelt.

Pixar can made great original films. Then, they try to continue a story that wasn't mention to continue, and you get most of their sequels. (Also, Cars is literally the only Pixar series I can think of currently that had all movies in the franchise be amazing. Cars 2 is overhated, it slaps.)

Honestly, Cars 2 is Metal Gear Solid James Bond on stereoids. Its so over the top that it just becomes "epic". And beacuse of that I enjoy watching it, even tho its bad.

I just think that Toy Story 4 actually ended the franchise pretty good in my opinion. So please respect it I know Toy Story 3 has the best ending but not all movies had the best ending to end a franchise because they're probably going to continue with all sequels. And with Toy Story 5 on the way I'm kind of worried of what the storyline of this movie will be about I mean Toy Story 4 or Toy Story 3 ended the franchise emotionally and with the final goodbyes to the main character. Toy Story 4 is supposed to be the final time we ever going to see Woody because the ending shows that he is going to be a Lost toy. So that means it's supposed to be the final time we ever seen of him. And my favorite character of Toy Story 4 is Forky because he is the only character that made the sequel good and he's the reason why my username is Forky and Anya Fan 2009. So that is my opinion there but I'm worrying about Toy Story 5. I mean i used to be wanted Toy Story 5 happen but it did now and you're not going to be happy about that. So I'm kind of worried about what the story is going to be about.

I thought about rewriting the spy plot of Cars 2 and the first Planes movie to involve steroids for the former and a Top Gun riff for the latter, but to me, it's way more appealing to create a present day Tv show sequel to Planes: Fire and Rescue with a Cars crossover using the 2 aforementioned ideas: Dusty and Skipper would help the spies and Mater blow up a new Allinol factory, the new Allinol being essentially a super speed serum for vehicles. My original idea to rewrite Cars 2 was to have McQueen addicted to Allinol ( a performance-enhancing fuel), Mater trying to get him to kick the addiction while trying to find out who tampered with the Allinol (Axelrod is not evil in this version), while my version of Planes would have so many Top Gun references it would have likely prevented Top Gun: Maverick from existing due to having a similar plot.

Most of Pixar sequels are ok like Monsters university or Cars 2. Incredibles 2 is bad especially the villain who was really predictable and not as fun as Syndrome. Dash's plot was boring, Violet too, Jack-jack has too many powers and is not funny. The new heroes ar enot developped except the portal girl. The action and music are good, not enough to make the movie good though 😐
