I think older stuff is still popular because you can sing along to it. It memes so it becomes part of culture. They were striving to affect the audience with songs rather than impress them with vocal skills. You can't even say 'Running up that hill' without hearing the song in your head. That's the true skill.

And it's a shame! Lots of artists are making it happen for themselves, but there are limits (in more ways than one).

@@MusicBiz I sympathize with label A & R somewhat. The sheer volume of artists coming at them is immense. But, once signed, I lament the "two-albums-and-you're done" scenario. It is, sadly, indicative of a corporate what-have-you-done-in-the-last-quarter mentality. But such is our world.
