This game is fucking incredible. If you think it's too hard you're just not giving it enough time or you're just terrible. This is a masterpiece! I've played it though at least 10 times now. So much fun and such amazing gameplay.

I had a great time with the game. It wasn't without its issues, especially at launch, but I enjoyed it. I would certainly categorize it as a "hard" game, although I don't believe I said it was too hard. Not for me, at least. However, there are plenty of people that would find it a bit too hard. A game like this isn't for everyone.

As an action story game it's great, as a roguelike it lacks run variety. One thing it definitely needs is a hud element to better indicate when something is about to hit you from behind. Roguelikes are my favorite genre and I had to wait about 1-2 years to finally get returnal on pc and I enjoyed it but it wasn't the reinvention of the roguelike I had heard it was.

I agree with you as far as saying that this game is a masterpiece! However I also agree with @zoznerol in saying that this game is a whole not genre, it is an experiment! He mentions this game having retro like elements, which is true, but the big element here that makes this game different from retro is that even in retro games you were given at least 3 lives before you started over again. Returnal gives you 0! This is comparing it to retro game from the 80's and a little bit of the 90's, because after that all games allowed you to save and keep what you earned! You personally enjoyed Returnal and had the time and energy to keep at it! That is great! I am glad you enjoy this game! However talking down to others who did not enjoy the game for reasonable reasons is not a very good way to start the conversation. Just sayin! 🤷‍♂

Problem? I'm playing it, I'm liking it. 34 hours in, 87 deaths, I'm finally half way through the game. Still playing. Update: In the end, I kept playing because of the compelling gameplay, and how I imagined I was staying connected to Selene's trauma/turmoil. But eventually, after the compulsion of the gameplay died down, I was frustrated that the real meaning and truth of the story was left so vague. I remember thinking to myself that if Returnal 2 was ever released, I'd buy it day 1, no question. But I'd be frustrated if it was still left vague, or went in a direction that just made it too divergent from the original game. So I'll hope for a second game with cautious optimism. What sold me on getting Returnal was the voice acting in the trailer I overheard when at the game store - and the gameplay sucked me in hard. I would like to see a second game, but I feel cautious.

I know it's 2 years old your comment, but... For the real ending you have to play the Tower of Sisyphus DLC. By completing that you get a bunch of new audio logs, tons of story in dialogue & a very cool new mechanic (trying not to spoil but it's all story related in the Tower starting area) that delves deep into Selene, Theia, & Helios.

I couldn't realize why even though it's hard for me to progress and i die all the time i still enjoy getting into it and now it clicked it's basically a platformer arcade game that i used to love to play as a kid , just in 3D . If someone wants to get into this solely to progress, level up and follow the story like god of war for example than they wouldn't like it but if someone enjoys running around and killing monsters just for the sake of it , literally like old arcade games than that's it .

Passed on this game at launch as it’s not the kind of game I’d usually go for. Ended up picking it up this week as I had nothing else going on for games and honestly I’m kind of annoyed I slept on this one at first. One of the best games I’ve played in a while. Everything about this game just works. The visuals, the amazing sound design, the addictive gameplay. Even when I was dying all the time my first runs before it clicked I didn’t even mind because I couldn’t wait to get back into it. Highly recommend. Even if it’s not someone’s usual type of game. If you even kind of think you might like this, go for it. I even thought it was worth 70 dollars and I mocked the game for this price point before release. I also couldn’t believe people were saying this was their game of the year, but honestly now I can see it. Everything about this game just works, and it is a great game. 9 out of 10 for sure.

Tbf there is no excuse for any game to be that expensive
@mandrews6282
@mandrews6282 3 жыл бұрын
@@frisby7143 yah I mean I get it. I would much prefer to remain at the 60 dollar price point. Especially when Sony’s competitor is staying there and many third party devs are as well. But we’ve been at 60 dollars for so long now we couldn’t expect it to stay that way forever. And if you put 60, 70, 100, something huge, hours into a game I think that justifies that price anyday. Thing is you don’t know how long you’ll spend with a game until you play it. The only issue I have with it is that sure, games are more expensive than ever to make, with prices approaching half a billion dollars on some games like RDR2. But, gaming is also bigger than ever and all platforms are reporting record profits that only increase year over year. While I think game prices can’t stay stagnant forever, I just also think that if you’re making record profits why are you raising the cost to the consumer. So I am torn on this one in how I feel about it. For a game I really want, and know I will likely enjoy, 70 dollara is what it is and 10 dollars won’t keep me from playing it and is not a large enough barrier. But for games I’m unsure of, which may or may not work out, like Returnal even though Returnal worked out for me, it does make me more hesitant to take a risk on unknown games. And I’m sure people who spent far less time with Returnal or didn’t get through the game feel they got ripped off here. It’s subjective I suppose. So I think this will do more harm than good for Sony. It makes them look greedy so is not a good PR move, and it makes people more hesitant to buy new IP’s. Which considering with GoW and Horizon being crossplay, and Horizon still allowing the free upgrade so will technically be 60 dollars for PS5 players that can just buy the PS4 version and upgrade immediately, they’re going to be relying on a lot of new IP’s. Other than those we just got a few of their major IP games already the last couple years so there’s not much else coming for a while, and it will be new IP’s. They’re setting themselves up for less day one launch sales of games by doing this. And they don’t even need to do it as they are reporting record profits. Just seems like a bad idea. Although most people will pay it. For exclusives they have no choice, and most people get a PS5 for the exclusives. Maybe they’re banking on all the people paying 70 dollars outweighing the loss in sales of people who don’t want to pay it and will wait for sales now.

"I love the game but I can't recommend it" sums up most of the games I've been playing recently: Warframe, Nioh 2 and Returnal. The core gameplay loop in these games is brilliant, but they don't respect the player's time, failing to tutorialize key aspects of the game (Warframe) and piling on silly mechanics just to make the game more souls-like/challenging when in fact it's being counter-productive to the game's pacing (Nioh 2). But I still play them because sadly, there isn't much better to play at the moment (at least in terms of 3rd person action games). I'm glad you mentioned the lack of save functionality in Returnal as a deal breaker. I grinded the game for 6 hours only to fall through the map, and since there is no out-of-bounds death (WTF!? That's the just straight up incompetence) I had no choice but to reset the game, and start from the beginning again. And the fact that they had to patch the max health exploit kinda proves that the design of this game wasn't properly thought through or tested. And since I couldn't refund it, I simply won't recommend or ever buy another Housemarque game again.

@Zoznerol
@Zoznerol 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think a game is supposed to consider a player's time. It's supposed to provide an experience. Some games are unreasonably long, but that's not the case with this game. And the game does have a checkpoint system of sorts. Once you've beaten the boss of an area, you do not have to play though the whole thing. You can warp to the next area, and once you've beaten most of the bosses, you can beat the game in about 3 hours. While there are some people that may not want to do so, or do not have the time, that is not a fault of the game. What they did with returnal, they did quite well. It may not be for you, but it is still a quality product. And from what I've heard, they did patch in a save and quit function, so the time investment is no longer an issue.
@mohamad-abdo
@mohamad-abdo 2 жыл бұрын
@@Zoznerol well beating a boss takes you several hours of gameplay so having a save function every few hours of a perfect run with zero deaths is not considered a save function. As for me i really would have liked to play the game, but the idea of losing progress and time investment is a nightmare to me ! Thats why i deleted demon souls after a few times of this happening and why i deleted elden rings after a couple of hours as i have no tolerance to repeating something i did countless times ! Your review really was well done. Few reviews I have seen point out how high the entry costs for this game are concerning price and expectations. Luckily, it goes on sale every now and then and the save issue has been addressed. As someone who loves Dark Souls's difficulty (Sl1 runs and Sekiro included), I will give this a try. But what draws me in even more is its tone and storytelling. This is what made the first Dark Souls so special (even among Dark Souls games) and it is something that seems to decide what my favourite games are. If Housemarque are equally daring with the tone, presentation, and storytelling as they are with the game's identity - doing something triple-A-titles normally don't - and the game does seem to be very self-aware at the very least, then this might be something to love - on sale and with the save function finally added.

@@linedpaper5374 oh, I get ya. However, that doesn’t solve the problem that this game or maybe more a problem the player has, and that’s difficulty. Most say it’s crushingly hard, even for hardcore gamers. I think they should have solved this by having 2 modes 1 single player campaign 2 Rouge like 1 death and game over But then maybe it’s the type of game where you don’t need a story or the ability to save and carry on where you left off, after you die, like most games but I guess I won’t know until I try it and to be honest, I think I will. While I see myself as a pretty decent gamer, I’ve never been brave enough to jump into games like, dark souls , bloodborne etc and never really played a rouge like game. I just know that if I give Returnal a try and absolutely suck , I’ll be ready disappointed and annoyed . Nothing worse then trying a game, really liking it but giving up because it’s way too hard for you. Take mortal kombat, XL for instance, I really enjoyed it, even tho, I’ve not been into beat em ups, since late 90’s. It’s brutally violent and tge fatalities are absolutely batshit out of this world and there’s bloody 100’s of them and I played for over 100 hours , daily, for few weeks BUT I never tried online 1v1 because I’m just flat out ok at mortal Kombat and have no idea how to string together those beautiful long complex combos , that lots of people on KZbin can do. I’ve even watched a few videos and I’m just lost. Guys saying , this move is plus 14 you can only do minus 1 against this but to get around it, you can change stance, have a quick wank and then counter this by using cancel 4 and I’m like, erm, i think ive had enough of this video. I really want to try Bloodborne but I just know that I’ll suck and just have to give up. If I had someone to help me, I’d jump in, but I don’t. I think you can summon randoms to help but I think I’ll pass. I’ll probably get them mad by my uselessness and I’ll get a load of f bombs over the chat, probably in a tough guy Gangsta voice 😭 happy gaming hey?

Out-freaking-standing Review/Video my friend! Insightful, Hilarious, and well thought out! And as the announcer in the Mk series occasionally says: Flawless Victory! I recently put down the game for good yesterday. I was already playing it once or twice a month as it was, and after getting the Mc-Covie, and on a mandatory vacay, i gave it a try again I've payed around 37 hours, and while the game is aesthetically pleasing, it is experientially eye-rolling. I got into the game because of the genre, sci-fi, not rogue-like XD--and grew into the expectations of how the game plays, and how it wants you to play it. That's this game's ultimate demise. It takes itself way too seriously. It thinks that you're going to continually give it a shot, and open up your entire afternoon for it, and when the weekend comes, your entire saturday morning, and if you failed, your entire saturday afternoon too. ...yeah (insert jj jameson meme...here) The games fatal flaw is foundational, its the progression-design, to encourage multiple play-throughs so you can level up weapons, and over time, pick up the stats mechanics on your own-and this is accomplished by unbalancing the difficulty of the scenario the game throws at you. For example, difficulty 3,3,6,5,10!!!! The game just smacks the crap out of you in one or two encounters of the game, and sometimes I truly believe they're unwinnable-and like a casino boss who knows you're gonna come back for more is waiting behind the glass, smiling, tapping their shoes on the floor, waiting for you to put another credit into the machine. So because we should come from a culture of putting foreward a solution instead of just a criticism, a major way this game could have mitigated its probably 80%-90% player fall-off would have been to include progression quests. For example, it is very clear the game doesn't want you to beat it in less than 10-14 hours, so you design portions of the game through progression phases (instead of a free-for-all, figure it out on your own as you continue to die), where you can weave in story lore, and story mechanics at the same time. We can learn how the different category of items in the game effect stats and performance. You do this by providing Progression quests for the player to seek out a single or particular item for example. Through Selene's logs, we can have a holo-room or holo-projection of stalled and incomplete data for an item or area that she needs to explore more fully to understand This would have been a great mechanic to justify stretching a campaign that should have been beatable in 6-8 hours and stretching it to something of the length of a traditional rpg. These side-quests would work exactly like the signals of fallen players you find in the maps, or even more structurally embedded in a quest menu. They'd be optional, and prove a progress path to consumable tokens to choose items of your picking, selecting load outs, perma unlocks, or even specialty limited use items like fast travel to a: "settlement" which would grant you temporary start point/access to a biome of your choosing, 3/4 cycles before it's probably destroyed by the fauna and flora. Or just plain cosmetic items like player and weapon skins, turn selene into a zombie, the enemies into clowns, i mean, just something that we can work towards between cycles, that if you’re a true to the death hard core f’ing fan of a rogue-like experience would scoff at but use secretly, fine, but some of us, normies, would want, and thus help keep a healthy populated player envirnment. By the way the daily challenges is a wonderful way to enjoy and bring extra fun the game. Just as you said, my friend, this was an introduction of a genre to a height that it'd never been raised to, and it truly missed an opportunity to bring in a wider crowd while still satisfying the get-better, hard core, ill give you my entire life if I have to crowd. Thank you for making this video, it felt like a really cool mini-doc :)

Those are some pretty good ideas. It's not like dark souls and it's not punishing. Returnal tries its best to be a roguelike-soulslike hybrid, but, problem is, the devs, apparently, aren't aware what makes a roguelike, well, roguelike and soulslike, well, soulslike. You can finish the game extremely fast, easily under 10 hours, there is no variety and there is no replayability, which makes it a bad rougelike. Meanwhile, for a soulslike its combat system is not that interesting and the game itself is not that hardcore - it's tedious and annoying at best.

@@Zoznerol The reason i dont like t is because i am very susceptible towards aim assist. I notice that console games aim for me instead of me aiming myself. Some games put your cursor in the emidiate facinity of the nearest anemy when you press the aim down sided trigger. (often the left trigger). So lets say there is a enymy to my far left. i am not in aiming mode and my crosshair is to the far right of the screen. when i go in to aim down sides mode the game puts the corsair near the enemy. now i only have to move the stick a little to hit the enemy. That is because you cant aim accurate enough with the sticks. So the game just puts the crosshair near the nearest enemy. Some games slow down your aiming when you are near an enmy witht the croshair. That is to make sure you dont overshoot the target. To make a long story short, i dont like the game cheating on my behalve. if i am bad at aiming i want to miss my shots. when i hit an rnrmy i want it to be because i aimed at the enemy all by myself. That is why gyro aiming with aim assist of is the best for me personally. I jsut hope Sony will keep putting it in all AAA first party titles. And if they really have the balls then they would force players to use it in the tutorial, like splatoon does. Gyro aiming only got populor on switch because Nintendo forced the player to use it in the tutorial in splatoon. More ppeople where exposed to it. People who liked it left it turned on. People who hated it could turn it of. alles Sony has no balls whatsoever and they dont inovate. Just like Nintedo and Microsoft they even refuse to resolve stickdrift, although this has been resolved over 20 years ago by sega. The solution is hall effect sensors and htey are not event hat expensive to implement. I just hope all 3 company''s will inivate more on both gyro aiming and the use of hall effect sensors in the future.
@Zoznerol

@@caleasthetic quite a few generalizations there, but I get what you're saying. For the most part. I'm fine with or without gyro aiming. I just play whatever the game offers. If the game has it, I use it, if it doesn't, it won't matter to me. I'll enjoye the game regardless. Plenty of games don't have gyro or aim assist, and it hasn't affected my ability to play. Analog sticks are just a effective as a mouse once you've had enough experience with them.

From your editing, some comments and this video alone I believe we share many common ideas on videogames. @Zoznerol
@Zoznerol 9 ай бұрын
This was my first video of this kind so I may have not have properly communicated myself. Plus, it's kinda not relevant anymore either. My problem was how this game was being treated by Sony. Returnal is a very niche game, but it's being sold as a more standard AAA title. I thought the marketing for it was bad, and the price at launch was a horrible idea. There's lots of people I know that got the game, not really knowing what it is, and hated it. I remember early ads for the game. It looked like some standard action shooter, not a roguelike. I honestly feel Sony trying to sell this to the masses they way that they did was a big mistake.
@Lexxidon
@Lexxidon 9 ай бұрын
@@Zoznerol I had absolutely no idea about that. It makes sense they could (and want to) frame it that way but it's a very dumb move. I think it's still relevant though to help me understand why this game flew under the radar - I just got a PS5 with it and as former Binding of Isaac addict I am loving this, and having a very good experience. This perspective + the ps5 shortage/scalping during first release year might explain it better now. A shame, because like you put it, I doubt a game of this kind will ever be produced. Very very unlikely, but I'm glad we have it.
@Zoznerol
@Zoznerol 9 ай бұрын
@Lexxidon this kind of game was never going to gain mass appeal. Not because it isn't amazing, but rather because it was deliberately made for a certain audience. A lot of early reviews I saw kept asking "Who is this game for?" It's for people like us. I'm a huge fan of roguelike games. I've always wanted to play Isaac, but haven't gotten around to it yet. I'm not sure if they wanted a return on investment, but selling this game at a AAA price, like it's a AAA game gave potential buyers the wrong idea. Despite its production value and graphics, Returnal is not a AAA experience. Those games generally cater to the greatest possible number of gamers. Look at Elden Ring, for example. Souls games didn't achieve massive sales until they adopted more AAA traits: the open world, the crafting, the stealth. Returnal was never supposed to be a AAA game. It should not have been sold as one.

I'm not sure what impact that really had on the game. I don't think it was a poor decision. I honestly think it was bad marketing that had the biggest effect. Either way, the game was never going to sell all that well, given how niche it is.

Lol. I've been playing Souls games for a decade now, so I'm used to them. Regardless, Returnal is a different kind of challenge than those games. Its difficulty is reflex based, whereas Souls games are more about patience, rhythm, and timing. And, compared to the other Souls games released since then, Demon's is not all that difficult. The gameplay is a bit different than a typical arpg, so there's difficulty in adjusting to it. Returnal is more like something that isn't all that common nowadays, an 8bit side scrolling action game. But it's in 3D. It felt very familiar to me, but those kind of reflexes are not required out of too many games today.

I actually assumed this video was intended as sarcasm. I assumed it would have concluded by the guy saying only joking, the game is amazing and will go down as a classic and one of the most memorable games for the generation. Returnal is a game that sticks with you. I don't think any ps5 game is worth £60 or 70 dollars. Even when GTA6 comes out I'll wait till it goes down in price. The most expensive game I bought for my ps5 was probably about £23-28 and even the £28 game would have been less because I traded in a game and got money off. I think I traded in Remedy's Control and bought a pre owned copy of the Dead Space remake because I wanted less cross gen games and more games built for the current gen systems to get the best out of my ps5.My best games were all under £20 including Returnal.🤷

It's a roguelike. Most are meant to be tough. You do get used to its pace quickly enough, then it's manageable. I didn't really have any problems with the resolution. But I'll admit graphics aren't a thing that matter all that much to me nowadays. I thought it looked good enough, and it ran smoothly. At least for me. In some regards, graphics are a detriment to gameplay in a lot of modern games. The need for the best graphics can sometimes cause developers to spend too many resources on this aspect of the game, and not flesh out the gameplay enough. This is something that Nintendo knows all too well, which is why most of their games play so well, despite never being on the cutting edge in the graphical department.
