The Problem With Social Media

The Social Media Trap. Social Media was never supposed to be used to compare yourself to others. It was supposed to be a simple way to connect with people on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter but it has evolved into something far more dangerous. Now, you can compare yourself to others on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok etc. without ever leaving your house. This is the Social Media Trap.
More time on social media is causing people to feel anxious and depressed. No one can live up to this endless stream of perfect moments and highlights. I don't think we were meant to spend so much time comparing ourselves to others on social media. Facebook, Instagram, TikTok etc. aren't going any where. It is up to all of us to navigate this changing environment and shine a spotlight on mental health, anxiety, depression, and body image issues within social media. It can easily become an addiction and many are trying to detox from the negative effects of social media. These are the dangers of social media.

I agree...I see my young grandchildren and family members getting depressed about the amount of followers they have, etc It's got to be tough on this new generation to feel like they're ok. In my day, it was hard enough just trying to measure up to kids around us, and there wasn't photoshopping back then!!! Keep up the good work

I have 4 granddaughters ages 10-14 n a grandson 16. N i can definitely see how social media has affected their-self esteem , self confidence , N just their whole personalities have changed from when they were younger n weren’t on social media and all of them had big dreams n positive self esteem , confidence etc. and i feel like it has also contributed to the false ideology of materialism instead of the important things n life that money Cant buy …. Always trying to keep up with the “Joneses” or should i say Kardashians? It’s ridiculous n really makes my heart sad for this generation n scared too!

Many people get hooked to social media for different reasons. There are people I know who socialize with friends mainly using gadgets. A friend of the family invited me out for lunch. The whole time the wife and the teenage son got glued to the screen like we had nothing to talk about. I belong to a music group and I go for practice every week. It's a social gathering that doesn't involve technology. Everybody play an acoustic instrument. Learning to play music doesn't require an Internet connection for sure... just many hours of practice. Close friends would meet for coffee and discuss the music we're practicing. We only take out a phone for emergency calls. Are we better off having technology than before? When it comes to online uploads, there are far more videos on just about every topic. People like myself & yourself who uploaded videos online considered ourselves KZbinrs. 20 years ago most people who put in an effort making videos would get a lot of views. Today your videos need to be original. A lot of music students & teachers would post the same pieces of music online. These are for education (others learning the same pieces) so being unique or creative isn't a concern. I upload how-to videos regularly. I do compare videos not because I want to get more likes but to answer questions that others who posted videos before haven't answered.
