I was too eager to play with numerous radio setups in one day, it was a very hot day as well, that's my excuse for making a pigs ear out of both radio set ups. I did however look back on the day with a sense of enjoyment, I just wished I'd told my face that on the day.
Equipment used:
Icom IC 9700
Icom IC 7200
M1ECC antenna
Diamond 5 elelment 144mhz yagi
Diamond? telescopic mast
Caravan jockey wheel clamps
I also used got to try out the All Powers S300 Power bank which performed well on the day charging laptops, phones and powered the LED lights at night. The S300 is an affordable power supply, feels well built and the design of it means it easily fits in the back of a busy car or truck.
Here are the official website's links and there's a 30% OFF discount code: CP30 S300 power station: tinyurl.com/4hh...
I'm a licensed amateur radio operator from the United Kingdom. My KZbin channel features videos focusing on operating portable radio from various locations plus how to videos, tutorials, insights and conversations in the hobby.

I love that you keep it real Carl. One of the main reasons I keep watching your videos matey. I’ve learned a lot from watching how you do things and your experiments. Hope to get you in the log some day. MW7WDP

Just returned from a camping trip on Vancouver Island, but never took my radio out of its case. The dew point was such that moisture condensed on everything, and didn't want to damage the IC-7300. Was still enjoyable though.

Well done carl. With all respect, sun hat, insect spray and a simple resonant vertical ant, away from buildings, sheep, people etc, And qso what you find, there's nothing worse than watching a radio video, where the person is just editing to give 5 seconds of Loads of contacts. You might aswell video yourself working a contest all day long, how boring would that be hi. A simple pre tested ant, a psu, wine, grub and relax. Next time carl, see how much gear you can leave at home. My portable setup, is a ebike, 20m vertical and battery, less is best. Keep on trucking carl, and please youself not the masses . 73.

Hands up all those who have been gifted a Balun only to find it does not work as planned ? I can't function in heat as well Carl so you have my sympathies. Still food and wine must have saved the day ?

What a great setup,Carl, and great scenery to boot! You look like you are having a great time with all the gear like one person said, a worst day playing ham radio is still better then the best day at work, and your out in nature enjoying the weather, you sure did a great job showing how to have alot of fun with portable ham radio, keep'em coming Carl, throughly enjoyable. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for all your videos Carl, I thoroughly enjoy watching, and I'm learning a lot. Don't take this the wrong way, but seeing you having a hard time with antennas not tuning, or dealing with bad conditions is reassuring for me. Seeing so many youtube videos where every QSO is with rare dx at 5w does not represent my experience with radio, even when using the most suitable setup. You are presenting reality, and having fun with it. Great stuff !!!

It’s a shame Carl, I’ve had to accept that 2 meter activity is not what it used to be. I shan’t be changing my 2 meter multi mode as I can’t justify the cost versus use. I was looking for a new mobile rig and again thinking very hard whether worth it. Once the A/B licences was abolished, not bemoaning that I miss turning the set on and chasing a free channel. 40 years ago was great to go up Snowdon to take part in competitions. Don’t be too down about it plenty of fisherman go out and catch very little. 73 Mike

Gday Carl when you held up that dipole antenna for "80m" , I thought mmm not much wire rolled up there for a leg on 80m. This portable stuff these days mostly revolves around parks or peaks, and some contests don't attract many ops anymore its easier to sit home and play FT8.

Hello from north Georgia US, Carl. Many excellent radio and amatuer sites on KZbin but your own welcoming us to share your adventures, ideas and experience on your beautiful, purpose-perfect property is the place I look forward to landing every chance. You reminded me that knowledge is an unlimited license to get out and DO what we love. That we can see the outcomes as they occur is a privilege and steps up knowledge for many of us. Thank you sir and long may you enjoy it too :-)

Not a Ham but retired professional here. The "CQ DX" calls from Italy tickled me. When I first went to Saudi Arabia in 1978 we didn't have telephone service anywhere so we had to rely on CB radios and the sounds of "CQ DX" coming from Italy stick with me today, 45 years later! Ironically, I had gone there to commission an HF aeronautical system covering Saudi, Syria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Yemen and Sudan. We had a couple of million dollars worth of kit to deal with and had to struggle through rubbish on CB to contact the office 10 miles down the road

I ten to fix vintage Ham Radio gear from 1960's. HF only. Don't care much for 2m or 440. Been there and done all that in the 1990's. HF is what is really interesting. But carry on. You have a proper outing there and you are happy and having fun. And a good meal at hand too.

I do very little ham radio. I am retired. I find too little time for it. Been little time for portable as always other jobs that take priority at home. Never mind. HF was not even Switched on this weekend. Today I am out walking. So I used the handhelds on dmr, and FM Repeaters, plus echo link on the Android and zello. Not a dicky bird. Gb3bC dead as a DoDo. That's on Echolink as well. Looks like your doing well. I am in a Gregg's at this moment. Heading back home shortly. Good luck.

Hi Carl, hope you are well. Nice to see you out and about. My radios haven't seen the light of day for ages now. I just don't have the spark for it. I think the last thing I did was test out TARPN on 4m with one of my local friends. We got the chat service working so we could exchange text messages in real time. The local emcom group fizzled out and with it my interest in Radio (for now). 73.

40 metres seems to be the best for a chat than 2 metres, 2 metres where I live is dead unless a lift is on the go. Shame as at one time it’s was a great natter band of an evening. I have only the basic of radiosQRP on hf and vhf, home brew, simple wire antennas, it’s challenging but great fun when you get through against those will more equipment and antennas. Look at SOTA or POTA…

Good morning Carl I have only been licensed since January last year, I have both HF/vhf/uhf equipment I am lucky in my home location 2/70 is fairly active (Wiltshire) I get good access into the repeater network. I have only managed 1 ssb contact on 2m but I am still learning the ropes, HF wise I can’t complain my set ups are mainly vertical and inverted V wire antenna. I have a 4 element beam for 2/70 which I will try when I get back home it’s like fishing one never knows who or what you get. M7CVK Tony

@M0SZT I have a VNA, so it will be interesting to see how the resonance changes as they get stretched out. My main antenna is a 270-foot OCF at about 30 feet. So, the slinky would be purely experimental.

Hi ,That looks like Merriton Low? I did very well in a backpackers from there yesrs ago. If 'CKR are on in the same square though, your receiver front end will just be constantly in compression and your resulting noise figure will be terrible, you'll not hear much over the whole band (been there, done that..) Keep at it though, perhaps pick a 2m location nearer Buxton? Some days it just doesn't go to plan, but not every day. Keep your spirits up, keep trying and thanks for the great videos. 73 G0JLF.

Since returning to the hobby i have pretty much gone full circle and started playing with 11m.I will probably get it in the neck for saying this but maybe it could be an option to give you a little variety along side the ham bands or maybe not, just a idea..Anyway great video and if the wine was just so the food looked great..Chin Up Carl 73’s

Hi - I'm really impressed with your organisational skills - the amount of planning you must have to do to organise your one person field trips. It looks like you're not too far from me (I'm in io83xb) - looks like on 'the tops' along the Leek - Buxton Road? Are you involved in any local clubs - with all your kit you could be a one person club! I'm recently returned to ham radio with a very modest qth only setup. Regards Rob G1VXD
