When we were deciding which RV would be best for us to live in fulltime as we traveled the USA with our family, we had a long list of must haves! We watched video after video trying to decide which RV would meet our needs. Looking back, we were a little naïve in thinking we knew what we needed in an RV. Sure, we knew we needed a lot of space for our growing family, but other things were just our best guess, since we had never RV’d as a family before!
After finally deciding on a toy hauler, we decided on a brand. Then came the decision of what floorplan and model to get. The only thing we knew was that we wanted the biggest toy hauler this brand offered! Little did we know that a lot of the things on our must have list would bring us problems and challenges in the future. Maybe you are in the process of deciding what will be the best rig for you or maybe you are looking to go bigger! This video may bring to light some things you’ve never considered, when considering a toy hauler!

I am glad someone made a video like this. It’s about being realistic as to your needs. I sold GD toy haulers RVs for years and own one myself. It’s not the type of unit a person unless a professional driver should start with as they are beasts. I had the advantage to meet many RVs over the years and your observations and experiences are spot on.

It is so true that the matresses you get in even the biggest Toy Haulers and Trailers are terrible! We have a Winabego bunkhouse trailer and that mattress was sooooo bad i was going to replace it but i decided it was worth it to buy an $85 3” memory foam topper to see if it could be saved. WOW! What a difference. Save yourself $1-2K and just get the topper, best mattress we have had anywhere.

Loved your video. My husband and I watch ALL of your videos. Yes, If it sits for months at a time, you're going to have problems. We are getting ready to take our 36ft 5th wheel across the country. While getting it ready to go, we have had to do a lot of extra work because it has been stored for months. We found out that one of our slide outs shifted forward and also tilted toward the back slightly causing its own problems. Luckily it was the side with the sofa and table and not the one with all the appliances, so it was easier to push back into place. Fingers crossed that all goes well during the trip. You guys are a joy to watch.

I live FT in a 24’ Class C RV. My “must haves” were basic: a shower and toilet. I thought the oven was cool, but have only used it twice in 1 1/2 years. The biggest pain is the main Queen bed. It’s a slide out. So if I pull into a rest stop, truck stock or Walmart for the night, I have to sleep in the bed over the cab. Which is usually filled with misc. stuff.

oh, I love LOVE the tent for the back patio. That works super, it can expand the play area, heck, if mom wants to just watch kids play she can park a lawn chair back there, get sun and fresh air, and watch the kids play. Great one Kevin! We love our Winnebago Horizon 42 Q because: 1. Size and floorplan 2. The Maxum Chassis ride 3. The Modern interior What we don’t like 1. Need to plan way in advance 2. Limited camping sites 3. Maintenance costs are super high $$$$ but, worth it. We knew what we wanted because we had 3 motorhomes in the past 25 yrs which really helps when you buy that last one. We are FT in a 40’ Class A Newmar Mountain Aire. We thought we need a security system but never use it as a security system. More for monitoring pets. Like: big fuel tank - can be more selective on when and where to get fuel. Get 7 MPG, not as good as you but can get about 1200 miles on a tank. No major issues in the last 1.5 years but always tinkering with something.

We have a 351M toy hauler with bath and a half. We both have motorcycles so that was my husbands main reason for the toy hauler. I on the other hand wanted a place for my kids and grands. 😊 We are retired so we make 1-2 trips per year, 1000 or more miles away and then some local camping. We have the water capacity and generator to dry camp at NASCAR tracks but usually stay at full hook-up sites on the way to and from each event. I plan 9 months to 1 year out for each trip and call the day of for overnight stays usually close to the freeway on the way there and back. If I had to do it over I think I’d like a 5er at 35’ and not as heavy as the 38’ 14000lb beast we have now. It has served us well and I love using the patio every chance I can get but we’re getting older so we shall see what the future holds. Love your videos .

My family travels in tent trailer (or pop up camper) and it's tons of fun for us. We got a 4-6 times a year and its perfect for a us being a family of six and the trailer is just perfect for a van to tow. It also takes about 40 minutes for a campsite to be fully set up which is great compared to when we did tenting. The only downside to it is that some of the best features like the heated mattress require plug in campgrounds which we normally don't go to.
@PavingNewPaths
@PavingNewPaths Жыл бұрын
We think if we just did a few trips a year we would be much smaller and quicker to set up and tear down! If we are in a hurry we can get the RV from set up to leaving the campground in about 1 hours! but normally its more like 2 and usually 2 hours to set up!

Love you videos! We have a 40ft Grand Design Momentum 350G Toyhauler, and we rarely let our patio down even though we love it. We are not full-time, so we only go rving every other month for about 5-6 days, so we probably would never use the tent. Lucky my husband has an automotive repair shop so we store our rv there and we always have it plugged into the electrical to run 1 a/c. We do go inside it regularly to relax and do house keeping to make sure bugs and pest have not moved in 😂. Stay safe out there and keep paving new paths!

We have a 2021 397. Our son has his full dedicated room, we pulled the second shower out and made shelves and turned that toilet 1/4 turn when we put it back, so much better! My husband does contract work so we don't move often yet. It's definitely a trade off being this large. There's just no being nimble, have to accept that. I wish I could use my patio more, but I can't in my current location:/ I fully understand about certain tasks that will test your marriage, we've had the same.. lol great video and much appreciate that you guys keep it real. :)

Biggest problem I've found in shopping for toy haulers is that I can't find one that'll fit two ATVs in the garage. One SXS may fit, two ATVs won't on every one I've seen. Really stupid considering that rarely does ONE person go camping alone.

Good video! We’ve had the tent, 2 tent trailers, 7 travel trailers, and one fifth wheel over our 41 years of marriage. We presently own a 2022 Forest River Flagstaff 832BWS travel trailer. This one is 37 feet long, 11’9” tall, with 4 slides. Our two boys are in their late 30s now, but we still seem to stick with bunkhouse models. Our only fifth wheel was 39 feet long with 5 slides. We felt we couldn’t pull it without a dually. My husband didn’t like giving up the bed of his truck. We like the bunkhouse models because it gives us a bonus room. Sometimes it’s a guestroom, sometimes our grand children travel with us, and it becomes their room and sometimes it becomes my husband’s home office. We considered a toy hauler, but in order to get all the things we wanted, we would need to go to a fifth wheel hauler. It was difficult to find a bunkhouse model that had two kitchen slides, a bedroom slide and washer dryer hookups. We didn’t feel we needed two bathrooms or even a bath and a half. We’re happy with what we have now. We live in it full-time and travel a lot. We also do a lot of boondocking so solar was a must. The most unusable space for us is the outdoor kitchen. We took the refrigerator out, took the griddle and bbq grill out, and my husband turned it into his workshop. We had our own bbq grill and store it in there for travel. And you’re right about the repairs and upkeep. It doesn’t matter what you buy or how much you spend, you’re going to have to fix things.

Thank you, glad you liked it! We knew for what we wanted to do with the RV that ours checked off the most boxes on what we thought we needed to be successful! Looking back there are several things we don't need, but we love this RV! In the future if we travel less or take shorter trips we would consider having a smaller unit to allow us to go to places we can't go now! You are right, if you actually use your RV no matter what it cost you will be fixing and repairing it!

That was a sweet looking red RAM in the background at the 4:53 mark 😂😂. Funny thing, last trip my wife asked if it's difficult pulling the fifth wheel. I told her the worst part of our journeys is the 3 miles between our house and highway because the backroad lanes are so skinny with steep hills, and have a couple tight turns (one turning onto a steep hill). I can relax a little once we get to the highways and I have our route planned using RV Trip Planner with stops every 2-3 hours.

I was going to say, "If your trailer has 6-wheels, your truck needs 6-wheels!!!" Guess I'm an old timer! 👴 All the problems you mentioned about being that big are spot-on! Makes it great, and makes it a PITA... I tell everyone that's new to big trailers, the biggest difference you will notice (or not until it's too late), is that tail swing. It will be your biggest challenge to adjust to. Then I tell them, do LOTS of research on parks (spot size, ingress & egress) and plan your routes extremely well. The time you spend doing that will ultimately save you lots of time and damage. The thing I love about my Seismic 4113, is that I have the side deck for additional entertainment space. That was the deal maker for me! Back deck is my full size BBQ & oversize cooler area, and bugs have not been a problem for me (but I'm not full time nor travel with kids). Tent looks great, but I wonder how much you'll use it in the future. Next time, try strapping it down before setting it up all the way if you can. Maybe won't blow away that way... I usually do a couple/few multi-week trips a year, by myself, to see friends, and it's totally worth it, because I can take my ATV and eBike with me. Fortunately, I have a loading dock to store it in, so not using it more does not cause extra problems. Once I saw the toy haulers with side decks, that became the #1 thing I had to have. Could do without the 2nd 1/2 bath, and wish I had a walk in shower instead of a tub, but those were the trade-offs. Thing I didn't expect was how much I love the extra basement space the elevated kitchen gives me. SAFE TRAVELS!!!
@PavingNewPaths
@PavingNewPaths Жыл бұрын
Maybe you were just taught by an old timer like me! You've definitely got to plan and plan some more before you move something this size, or it will cost you! Lots to be aware of, like the tail swing, as you mentioned! The kids tend to open the door and come in and out without closing it, since they have toys in both areas and the bugs just take us over! We were looking at the 399TH when we got ours and it had the side patio. There were just a few things we needed that it didn't have, so we took it off our list! And next time, we will strap it down first! Hoping to use it again, but it is just so rainy lately, we haven't had the chance!

Great video! So much important information when considering a big rig. We have a Coachman Brookstone 344FL. It has a "master suite" with bedroom and large bathroom. We love it most of the time. The trade off is that it is about half of the RV, which we only use for sleep and shower. The living/kitchen area seems small when we are inside due to weather. And as always, our RV does not have enough basement storage. By the way, Happy Belated Birthday!!

We have a 2021 397TH and you did a great job! We are a retired couple, so we use it a little different than you and we're half timer's, we do go home once in a while. The garage is great and so versatile. We haul our toy, use it for an office, guest room (with full bath) and an entertainment room. It is hard to find a place to use the patio, I really like to get backed up to a lake! Sitting out there with a beverage is hard to beat. Glad you measured your rig, I guesstimated ours and was off a foot, I thought it was probably 63 feet. If I had it to do over again, would I buy it? Yes, yes I would.

We are empty nesters and our first camper was a 29' couples travel trailer. We recently upgraded to a 38' 5th wheel couples model for more space and we love it, though traveling does take more planning. My biggest complaints about the travel trailer was the small bathroom and limited space/storage in MBR. It always seemed like I was moving things to get to other things. I also didn't like climbing in at the foot of the bed and limited closet space. We now have and East West bed so just get in normally. We also now have a closet the width of the RV as well as W/D hookup which comes in handy on longer trips. In the bathroom we have a double vanity and large shower vs corner in the TT. Not sure the double vanity is needed but I hate corner showers. We are planning some long trips i.e. Alaska and we want some creature comforts. Really enjoy the 5th wheel. I daydream about toy haulers but only to be able to haul a golf cart. I am looking at options to be able to do that safely with regular 5th wheel. Love all your videos and following your travels. Would love to see you guys travel to Alaska and get your perspectives.

I’ll never own a 5ver because of all the travel limitations.

We can only justify having this thing because we are fulltime, if we just went out a few times a year we would be a much smaller rig! It works for what we are trying to do now, but in the future if we are not fulltime or just taking bigger trips out we would likely do it in a smaller rig!

Great video and I agree with everything you've mentioned, the struggle is real for big rigs lol. We have a Primetime Crusader 382MBH and it's 44ft long and 13.4ft tall and like you guys, it limits us to certain areas. We like shaded sites but a lot of camp grounds we're limited to pull through sites which might only have one little sappling tree lol. Also like you said, I'm always researching the route and even google map the camp ground to see what it looks like from above. But I will say that being a 5th wheel they are very maneuverable, we frequent one camp ground and it's wooded and very tight but we manage to get into the site problem free. We towed it with a 19 F350 srw and it towed it fine but got pushed around down hills specially so we bit the bullet and were lucky to find a new 22 F450 and its the perfect tow rig and with our rigs pin weight of only 2500lbs it doesnt really effect the truck at all. Lastly, a must for us was a mid bunk so my Daughter had her own room. It's not as big of a room as a toy hauler but big enough to be comfortable for her. There's one manufacture making a 2 full sized room2 with 2 full bathrooms now and my Wife was like "hmmm"... I said no!

I am amazed you got that back in the bag. I have a queen sized air mattress that moved to a big ikea bag after the first time i used it. I tried a few times to get it small enough but alas, i failed. My dad and I are spending a lot of time looking at towable rvs. We'll probably start with a travel trailer, but unless the lottery gives me money, i'll need a workspace. which was my plan with something like a toy hauler. plus the bed size for extra full sized humans. I think it's funny you got all this boondocking stuff (gen, tank size) and you won't. :)

We have boondocked maybe 10 nights in the last 3 years, in rest areas, truck stops, and on family land! We had plans to do harvest host and use our capabilities in the beginning, we learned early, that is just not the way we are going to travel! Sure we can, but with our set up and family it just doesn't make the most sense to camp at those type of places! I to be honest would not get something that long for just the two of us(scared to tow something that large) 37 feet for me is the longest I will go. That black tonk of 100 plus gallons? Thats a lot of(waste) LOL our tanks are all 40 gallons and as a couple we can go a week on those if we are conservative. I do have a 60 gallon fresh water blatter and a 42 gallon blue boy tot. We dry camp 90% of the time. There are always a work around to make your camping experience work for you. I would not change my Rig if I was at full hookups 90% of the time because tank size would not matter when having full hookups. I would have not invested in any of the typical dry camping crazy expensive stuff, like inverters and lifepo4 batteries and solar or a fat generator. There are good RV'S out there but none that are perfect! We love and hate things about ours, but it checks the most boxes in what we needed to travel fulltime! I agree the new awnings can't be trusted in the wind or rain!

@@PavingNewPaths Exactly, find the one that checks the most boxes. But I will likely always pick a 5th wheel over a tag. We where between a TH and the front living in 2020. We went with the indoor living space over the garage/sleeping space for our now teens.

Alicia I’m with you. I HATE flies. They are nasty!!!! We had a grand design toy hauler which we loved. But we never used the patio either. Great idea. But with an rv you are already outside. The tent thing is great for the kids though. Good clean play area

We hate flies so much, feels like it takes days to get rid of them all! The tent was awesome it basically doubled the kids room and they had so much space to play! We don't think we will ever leave it out in the rain, but for extended periods of good weather for sure!

Thank you very much for the intimate look into your t.h. The video is the best so far, as an off shoot of the norm. Also, brother man, i feel you`re doing very well, considering the number of people who drive like traffic laws are suggestions to laugh at., any way, be safe and sound always all. Agree all day about the flies, and include bugs period, they belong outside lol. a good vacuum in a holster, lol, at the ready. We thought we would boondock more, but once we started having kids and being fulltime we realized that one, we can't conserve water very well, and two we like having full hookups and a place for the kids to play! We might actually boondock if we were only going to do it a few times a year on short trips!

Great video. We have a 2017 Heartland Road Warrior 427 Toy Hauler towed by a Ford F450. It has a side patio which we always use in addition to the rear patio, which we hardly ever use for the same reasons you listed. The tent makes me think it might be used more, assuming we have a space that will accommodate the ramp door down. Curious where you purchased the tent?
@PavingNewPaths
@PavingNewPaths Жыл бұрын
Thank you! We looked at that model and really wanted the side patio, but I believe every side patio model you end up losing the pass through storage, and that's why those got removed from the list of what might work for us! We found the tent at a dealership that still had one in stock! We have had it for a while but haven't had a chance to use it!

We still have a pass thru storage on our Road Warrior 427 but perhaps it may be smaller than those w/o side patios? We also have the Happi Jac system in our garage and want to get a "real" mattress for those. Can you tell me the exact one you went with that fit that space?

Nice job in getting that tent back in the bag!! (Just how many time did you try to get that in the bag!!) Liked the review of the "Pros" and "Cons" to a toy hauler!! But I'm wondering where your going to fine a room for Kaden?? Stay safe!!

That was actually the first try getting it in the bag! That is what is great about the toy hauler section we have another queen-sized bed that isn't being used and we can modify or make changes to the room to make it work for 3 kids! We also still have a loft that isn't being used that one of the kids may start sleeping in!
