Villain-Con: Minion Blast is the newest ride at Universal Studios Orlando. However, it's been met with mixed reception for a multitude of reasons. In this video, I'll be breaking down the problem with Villain-Con: Minion Blast.

I got a ruby express pass because this ride shut down 80% of the way through and I got to skip a 90 minute line for Hagrids with the pass. Villain-Con is a 10/10 ride for me for this reason lol

I visited shortly after official open and rode about 6 times in 2 days. While I've heard that other people encounter a lot of glitches, this was not the case for me. As far as the ride being confusing, I think that's part of the point. Minions are all about mayhem. I like the different pointers for each gun, it's far less confusing than buzz or mib, where everyone has a red lazer. As for the learning curve being a disadvantage for first time riders, this applies to all shooting dark rides. This ride has more opportunities for people who have already ridden a few times to learn the game even better, which improves rerideablility for passholders and repeat guests. While the gun being handheld rather than mounted has the disadvantage of being heavy for guests, I like the additional mobility to reach targets, which you don't get on buzz lightlear or toy story. Also my arms get way more tired from constantly pulling the string on toy story than from carrying the gun on minions. If I had more trouble with glitches, or disliked the IP, I might have a more negative view of the ride, but as things stand I think this is a great ride, which I will continue to reride every visit.

I just didnt like having to stand in line then stand on a dot with my feet together holding a gun that is very awkward

For me, shooting dark rides live and die off their controls. If I can't figure out where I'm aiming and what I'm aiming at, it's a dud. This is why I think Toy Story Mania is pretty much the pinnacle of the ride genre.

I rode this once. It was... OK? I've been a fan of lightgun games since I first tried Duck Hunt ~30 years ago, but on VillainCon I struggled to tell how well I was shooting and if my shots were even landing where I was aiming. After a bit, I determined where my aiming reticle was and relied on just moving that around instead of actually aiming the gun. MiB is much more immersive and I actually feel like I'm aiming my gun instead of just moving a cursor around and pulling the trigger when it winds up over a target.

Hate to tell You that this was one of those ideas where too many pretentious creatives had a hand in operations..as well ...the rumble packs were removed due to blasters over charging and catching fire/melting due to the device inside.

I do agree that Villain Con: Minion Blast isn't Universal's worst ride... because I don't think it's really a ride at all. It's just a conveyor belt you have to stand on while carrying something bulky. That's not really a 'ride' for me. It's not a very good shooting game, either. While I do like the fact that it at least *tries* to separate players' dots with unique colored symbols for each blaster, it really doesn't do a good job of it because of the chaos on the screens, and because the only time I stood on this moving walkway, there were two or three of each symbol due to different blasters using the same symbol. Compare this with Men in Black: Alien Attack. Once you figure out where you're shooting, you're golden. You can generally figure out which red dot is yours quickly and how to aim so your dot hits stuff, and targets are usually obvious. The one issue with MIB is that, because it's older, some of the blasters don't make the hitsound or have the red dot, and while the hitsound doesn't matter, and the red dot really is more of a visual indicator so you can still hit stuff if you're good enough, it can still be frustrating to not get that auditory feedback in the Fusion Exhaust Port section or be able to see where you're aiming. Minion Blast has an unfortunate plethora of issues that I don't think can be fixed quickly. It's an unpleasant experience that, while it's got some nice theming and I get to shoot those stupid little yellow blobs, doesn't feel like it's up to Universal standards. Honestly, replace the Minion theming with Loony Toons theming and it feels like a Six Flags-tier attraction. Relatively decent and maybe a bit fun, but not worth a trip to a huge-name theme park.
