Excellent when I was a teenager I saw a man hand adze a table out of Kauri wood in Auckland NZ. He was taught by a man born in the 1800's who also passed on his tools to this chap when he passed on. The wood was ancient Kauri taken from the old wharves in Auckland when they were replaced. The finish needed no sanding like this that is a real art and I am so glad to see that this art form is alive and well. Kauri is an amazing wood it has a sheen all of it's own.

The Ainu are the first inhabitants of Japan and reside in the northern islands but are concentrated in Hokkaido. They have their own unique language but only about 100 people know how to speak it.

Thank you for sharing your amazing craftsmanship. The trays are very beautiful and your work stunning. I did also love the sound of those wonderfully sharp tools. The v tool you used with the handle that fits into the crook of your thumb and first finger looks like it would be amazing to use. I will endeavour to make a new handle for one of my v tools to see if I can master it's use. It looks so versitile. Thanks again.

Amazing. I love to see by-hand woodworking. I find myself being interested in the tools as much as the carving. They are not mass produced, perhaps self-made by the carver or from a local maker. I wish they would show more the tools being made, as that is just as much part of the process as the carving.
