I had to rewatch the beginning as I was confused at first about the steel, I thought it was a crusty water pipe or something, but I saw the second time it was a rifled barrel of a gun. Interesting that you didn't make the 'traditional' Tamahagane steel blade but chose the fine steel of a gun instead. It is a very fine sword and scabbard. Very beautiful!

that method was evolved to make the best of extremely poor quality of metal available, an issue that probably isn't a thing anymore.

wood is mainly used in various types. The reason it is glossy is that it is painted with lacquer extract(Toxicodendron vernicifluum), so the black is glossy.
