You know what can I do if I have uneven cpu cores temps? When i purchased my y540 it doesn’t went over 77 degrees (with undervolting) after a year temps reached 95 degrees so I repasted recently and now I have like 77 in some cores and 84 in others with the same exact test. In the final part of the video seems that your cpu is mismatched too (in mine only happens on heavy load over 70 degrees) It’s about the repasting or about the screwing up of the heatsink? I’ve been having frame rate drops on my laptop for over a year. Couldn’t figure it out as I’m not that tech savvy when it comes to hardware. Turns out my fan was completely clogged with dust. Any game no matter how old it was wouldn’t play well at all. After I unclogged all the dust following this video, my laptop works like new again. I can even play my games on high settings and I can actually use it on my lap without burning a hole thru my pants. Thanks a million!

if yours is a legion y520, you might notice a significant difference in fan noise. The Y520 tends to be quite loud right out of the box, but, when the laptop is struggling with overheating or maintaining lower temperatures the fans wwould be unusually loud,and that would be a clear sign that the fans might need cleaning. Personally, I find it necessary to clean the fan on this device every month or two because the spring noise produced by the fan makes me worry it's on the verge of breaking.

Thank you man. I repasted thermal paste on my 3 year old y520. Temperatures dropped by 8-12C. The fans were really dirty too, had to spend a lot of time cleaning them! I really appreciate the guide!

Thanks for the guide! My y520 hasn't been cleaned since I got it in 2018 and it was in a seriously bad state. On idle it was at like 45-50 degrees Celsius. It went up to 70 while just watching KZbin. Playing video games was basically impossible due to throttling. I had to use extreme cooling and a cooling pad to get under 95 degrees in games so I could even play them. I bought myself some arctic silver and isopropyl alcohol and followed this guide to fix this. My radiator was almost entirely clogged up with dust that came together to form something reminiscent of a sponge. It was blocking the hot air that tried to escape. After cleaning it up and changing the thermal paste I'm getting 30-35 C idle, not more than 50 on some moderate load (a few tabs open, KZbin playing etc). And to my big surprise after a quick test playing some games I didn't hit more than 65 degrees! I'm sure it will go up to at least 70 because I only played for like 30 minutes to test it, but that's still an amazing improvement. So guys, don't make my mistake, clean your laptop at least once a year. Also, the original paste from the initial assembly in the factory was awful. I think that when I buy another laptop in the future I'll dissasemble it right away and replace the thermal paste. The original paste was spilled all over the place and was very uneven on the chip. Cleaning it was a nightmare.

What you described is exactly what I wanted to help people with in this video demonstration. People always get surprised, but it is actually true. Dust collected by the course of time forms a semi-solid state, as you properly described it, a sponge! Also about the factory thermal pastes, this have been a customer issue since laptops first came out. They don't care if your thermal compound is suitable for your system, manufacturers are not obligated to do that, so they simply ruin your systems life longevity in broad daylight. I want to thank you for taking the time and sharing your experiences with the laptop, I'm glad it helped you out!

I've been using this laptop for over 3 years now, no thermal throttling whatsoever. Im just preparing myself with this video for the future, very good and clear explanation, sir btw using a vacum cleaner ( with electricity) could potentially damage or even fry the parts of the laptop, as far as i know

Hi there Marko, thank you for the kind words. The end of the vacuum cleaner I use is 100% made out of plastic, so there is not metal parts on it that could potentially contact with the laptops electronics and damage them. Ofcourse, there are other methods to remove dust from electronics. Compressed air is also recommended for these jobs but I personally dont do that because pushing dust outside into your room, will eventually re-enter your electronics again. @@DisassembleEverything Got myself a 2nd hand Y520 15IKBM just a couple of weeks ago. It is missing the X key, its hinge and the rubber cup under it. It has other issues as well and one of them is overheating so I google-fued a bit and found your video. I bought the key stuff online (not advertising here, but I believe it was a French company, quick to deliver and price was OK) and now I have everything needed to fix it. Thank you for this vide, it's excellent. BTW, I agree with @markan_6978 about using a vacuum cleaner - it's not the metal parts or knocking out some bits, it's more about the static electricity. Vacuum cleaners, at least the normal household ones, tend to have a lot of it. You don't need to touch the computer parts with the cleaner, the voltage is high enough for the current to jump if you go close enough. I'm not telling not to do it, but if you do be aware of that and try to ground the electricity and don't go too close. If you still do these videos I think just mentioning the static electricity would be enough. I'm using compressed air, but I live in the countryside so it's easy. I just step out, blow the dust off and go back inside :)

@@DisassembleEverything I cleaned my 2.5 year old Y520 today. When I opened it, i saw a lot of dust and dirt stuck om the fan, heat sink, and insides of the USB+Ethernet ports. A thorough cleaning of all the insides and applying of paste took me about 2 hours to complete! Before cleaning and applying thermal paste, I was getting average idling temperatures of 75℃, while I would frequently get throttled while playing games. Now I get average idling temperature of 59℃. Throttling is still happening during games, but it is a lot less frequent and not noticeable. Without applying the paste and just cleaning everything, I saw average idling temperature of 65℃. I guess the performance of the thermal paste will improve after some hours of settling in? In any case, the laptop performance improvement and temperature/current running parameters have improved well beyond my expectations! Thanks for the great video that helped me get the laptop open, with confidence that I could refer to your video in case I got something wrong! Keep up the good work

@@sumitchakraborty9059 Thank you so much for the kind words and I am glad you saw improvements in performance. Depending on what paste you used, curing times differ. A "cured" paste may at best drop idle temps for another 1-2 Celcius so dont put your focus on that. Another advice I can give you for these laptops is that they need to be "lifted" up a bit so that they receive more cool air, so it is highly recommended to buy a laptop base for it (search up on google: DeepCool Wind Pal FS). Other than that, as long as the laptop stays in a place where the sun is not directly hitting on it and remains in the shade, you should be more than fine! Happy gaming!

On the left, next to the SATA SSD (named Samsung), you will see a cable that has the following colors from left to right (black, brown, white, green, red) That cable is for the laptop battery. Hi, great guide! A couple of questions: 1) I have a screw on the heatsink that is stuck. I've tried getting out with multiple size screwdrivers and I believe the head is partially stripped. Any tips on how to remove it? 2) The small screws on the fan plate - what size screwdriver do you use? Or preferably, do you have a link to the screwdriver set that you use in this video so that I have both the proper sizes to remove the fan plate + heat sink screws?

Hello Disassemble Everything, thank you for this in depth video it really left no questions in mind in terms of cleaning.But I have this problem with my lenovo y520 maybe you could help ? about a week ago my computer has frozen while I was gaming on it so I decided to power off from the power button which lead to an auto repair loophole that I currently fixed with a format + windows reinstall but now I cannot activate my gtx1050(when I checked it from devices menu it had a "!" mark next to it), when I tried to download the nvidia drivers for it the first time the pc crashed with a really loud stutter so I tried again, this time the pc has gone back to the auto repair loop which I have fixed again with a windows reinstallaiton so do you think this problem has anything to do with hardware (shortfuse due to power off from button) or maybe my windows installation was missing files ?

I want to apologize for the late reply, I hope that you find a solution to your problem, but if you didn't there is something that comes to my mind that can help you out. First of all this sounds like a storage device issue along with the OS's installation for Windows 10. Many forums have reported that in general, when a windows 10 installation boot loops (also known as the infinite repair mode screen) the only real solution that could fix the problem is FULL formatting the hard drive/ssd and install a new version of windows 10 inside. It is not the most ideal solution, because you probably have personal files you want to keep, but if the drive is corrupted with an OS inside, most of the time it is a lost cause. Even if you install a new OS into the ssd and you still get errors and the computer does NOT behave as it should, there are 2 other possible factors that could cause this malfunction. Either the SSD is faulty, or the Motherboard runs non factory settings into the BIOS. It is a realy complicated process to narrow down the problem, if you are the type of person that takes his time with research, I suggest you do so. If you do it once, probably nothing will happen. If you are going to regularly disassemble the device, you want to start making sure no electricity runs through the device while currently fiddling with it. At that point you should also start worrying about the surface you are going to put all the parts (contact only with antistatic surfaces, like a wooden table)

very simple video, thansk for that! i have issues with my laptop it runs over 90 up to 98 degrees on CoD MW even when i undervolt my CPU to 85%. I had a bad start with that laptop, was blackout drunk and i flooded it with beer. next morning i woke up and it diddnt even started, i turned it Up and nearly 1 litre beer came out... laptop was dead.. i tryed to remove every fluid of that and let it standing there to get it dry.. Half a year later i randomly tryed it again and the laptop works again right now since that nearly 2 years without any issue, just KB is broken so i used an external. I guess due to that beer stuff the thermal paste or smth else ripped apart the thermal paste... im very decent in building stuff on normal PCs and i know how to clean some dust from fans but i were too scare to put new paste on it bcs i thing i might break it. Your guide is very helpful and it seems like it isnt that hard, so i just need to get my broke ass some alcohol and thermal paste. Those tempratures arent good for my laptop tho it goes very hot even standing under a coolermaster cooler tho. I hope with new paste and cleaned heatsink this laptop dont goes that high again... well my old fujitsu lifebook overlifed 8 years with hardcore gaming WoW over 110-120 degrees and it still works today XD.

Happens to the best of us Dominik, the keyboard on these laptops are designed to stop working the moment liquid touches their electronics. As for the thermal paste, be gentle when removing the heatsink from the cpu, the thermal paste thats on there might be dry, so if you force it by pulling you might brake the capacitors around the processor. Generaly, the reason you get high temperatures, regardless of laptop or desktop, is because the thermal paste looses its heat dissipation properties the dryer it gets. That is the reason it is advised in the first place to add new thermal paste on old/hot products. When the thermal paste gets dry, it solidifies itself in a way. Now all of the sudden instead of having thermal paste, you have "cement" between your heatsink and cpu. Do gentle giggles until you are certain that the heatsink is removed without any force. Hope this helps!

@@DisassembleEverything i just finished it right now. dude there was so much dust and stuff between the heatsink and the coolers.. like WTF. Diddnt had a scapel so i used an old EC card. Worked pretty decent. Sadly i recognized some small pad is missing where one should be. IM testing cod MW later today. But even FF14 runs now at max 72 degrees, before it was 85-90. Paste and alc diddnt cost me even 10 bucks, just had to walk the whole city. Your guide truly helped me alot, even tho i dont have a vacuum cleaner :P. Thanks again bro!

I could play on FHD right now, which i couldnt before thanks to throttling bcs of the heat. Deathmatch and any other regular CoD MW stuff runs around 75~, kinda an upgrade for me! i thank u again bro. i cant thank you as much as u deserve. Is there some way i could support you ?

Thank you for reaching out Beatrice, when it comes to electronics we always try our best to keep away from any scenario that could create static electricity and discharge onto our devices. Its small things to look after, but if not followed you run the risk of destroying your device. The gloves I used in this video are made out of nitrile and can be found at any grocery market or electronic store. Hope this helps :)

Awesome video! really helped me alot. but i got a question, do you know the exact thickness of the thermal pads for this model? I got the same laptop but the thermal pads on mine got eaten by ants (lol didn't know ants like those stuff) so i bought and applied 1.5mm thick thermal pads but i noticed there's gap on the heatsink and the part that should have thermal pad ( the square part beside ram and near the m.3 ssd. don't know what component that is) but after testing/gaming I'm still getting thermal throttling on my laptop. by the way i tried to measure the old pads and i got 1.5mm thick, maybe i measured it wrong or it was already compressed. How are you seekerseer, You've ran into a very special case scenario here unfortunately and I cannot provide you with enough info due to the fact that it never happened to me :( Best advice I can give you is that the thermal pads should make a small "groove" when they make proper contact with the heatsink. If you see them looking intact and their top surface is smooth then most probably they don't make good contact. Thank you as well for commenting! :)

Glad you enjoyed the video :) When it comes to laptops they are assembled differently than normal computers. Both CPU and GPU are permanently soldered into the motherboard. So having said that, if you wish to replace the CPU on your laptop you will have to buy a replacement that includes the motherboard, the cpu and the gpu. Hope this clarifies things. Lovely and useful video, im confused how the IT support handle to customer products in Lenovo, especially german IT guys. Heat sink was opened but termal paste was not replaced during hardware maintenance... User, if you are like to save some money, dont do that when you are looking for gaming laptop. Lenovo is good PC not that, but the customer service blows big time...

Can you help me?, I read in the comments to remove the battery, so before I got to work I removed the battery cable and 2 another two near the fan(there were 3 cables near the fan and I took out the smaller two) and carried on with the instructions show in the video, I finished up and tried to turn on the laptop to no avail, the small light that turns on when the laptop that is located of the left side does turn on, but everything else doesn't, I used absolute ethanol to clean the laptop, any idea what I should do?

It is common practice to use cleaning agents that leave no stains on metallic surfaces. From experience, isopropyl alcohol specifically, fits that description best, because alot of other alcohol solution sold in pharmacies are commonly mixed with aromatic lotions that could even ruin a metallic surface. There is alot of interesting research you could do about cleaning agents and where they could be applied best for. Thank you for taking the time and commenting :)

Thank you very much for this cleaning tutorial. But I have a small problem, I don't have a thermal paste. I only went here because it has cleaning tutorial, then again I thank you for it. I want to ask. Will there be a problem to my laptop if I did not apply the thermal paste at the moment? The part after cleaning up the CPU/GPU. Instead of applying the paste, I will just put it back together, after cleaning the CPU/GPU and the heat sink. But, If its really necessary to add the paste, where can I buy it? Good evening Sager, Do not attempt to start your laptop if you haven't applied thermal paste on the cpu/gpu like showed in the video. You run the risk of permanently damaging your laptop and its components inside. Follow step by step the video and do not skip steps. It is realy important everything mentioned in this video! You can buy thermal paste in most technology related stores, such us smartphone or computer stores for example. For any other question feel free to ask and also give a quick read in the comments other people have left in this video. You can learn alot from them :) Cheers!

@@craftyboi9169 Even if you did add little thermal paste, its rare that this would be the reason to permanently damage your motherboard. Most processors nowadays have kill switches when they reach above 100C. So in other words, if you added thermal paste the "wrong way" your system would simply automatically shut down after a couple of minutes from its initial boot. Having said that I do recommend you open the laptop again and check if both CPU and GPU have thermal paste on them and reapply new one.

Hi and thank you for commenting my friend, Unfortunately I haven't experimented with lenovo bios yet, when the time comes in the future I might do so, but for the time being I cannot help you with this. As for your second question, there are many reasons why you shouldn't put too much thermal paste in any electronic. First and foremost, the purpose of thermal paste is to transfer heat from point A to point B. Surface A to surface B. When you put too much paste, all of a sudden you don't have only 2 surfaces, but also the whole circumference of those 2 surfaces. In other words by putting too much, the paste "underperforms" in its job to transfer heat efficiently. Another reason why its bad to add too much thermal paste is when it gets dry, it will solidify to a much greater surface area, making it even harder to remove it between the cpu and the heatsink and even potentially risking damaging other components of your machine nearby. And obviously another reason why its bad, is that you get to do even more cleanup when you are going to add new one. Hehe! Is it necessary to re paste ? I have been using this laptop for 3 years straight and the max temps I get are 70° (i5) while gaming and ideal it's 40-50° ...so should I go for repasting or not? Confused.

Your temps are low so there is no emergency adding new ones. But when you reach those peak temperatures (70C) and drop in performance (Low FPS, short pause frames etc) then you should consider doing so. I would personally start with cleaning the fans (if you notice alot of dust collected in them) and see if that helps out. Otherwise proceed with repasting as shown in this video! Let me know if this helps :)

Hi there! Pretty sure you cannot buy this tape on the exact cutout that the laptop features. Having said that, you could buy antistatic tape (or any tape as long as its non-conductive) and cut it to shape just like the original. Hope this helps a bit, cheers!

Hi there Bharat, If you have the exact same model as shown in the video, all the screws should be Philips head style. If you can be so kind, please describe to me in more detail what do you mean by "flat". Is there only a dash "-" on the head of the screw? In that case you can use a flat screwdriver. But if the screw has no grooves at all , there is a possibility that its a factory defect and you will need to contact Lenovo about it. Waiting for you reply, thank you for commenting!

Im guessing you mean the screwhead is stripped out. Either that or you have a different brand of laptop and theres literally a plastic rivet instead of a screw. Either google how to tap a stripped screw and then (very very carefully) drill it out (or have a pro do it) - or google how to extract a plastic rivet.

Greetings Adri and thank you for your question, Yes, you will find other Lenovo Legion laptops with the same keyboard like the one you have. If you remove the keyboard from your laptop, you will also see a sticker on the back of your keyboard with a serial number written on it. That serial number is the specific model of the keyboard used on that laptop, and with a simple online search you will be able to find sellers for you to buy from! Hello Ciaran! Best info I can give you about this is that the GPU specifically on this Lenovo Legion laptop is an Nvidia 1050ti model N17P-G1-A1 Personally I haven't come across any video of it being replaced on a laptop, but there should be something out there. Hope this helps! :)

Definitely agree with you on the cooling, even though these lenovo laptops don't heat as horrible as some other laptops out there, they do still need some external cooling. The Y520 that I showcased in this video is currently resting on top of a coolerpad, just so that the bottom of the laptop is raised and therefore let fresh air flow on it much easier. Hey, we have the same model of laptop Lenovo Y520 limited gold edition one. I applied my thermal paste though I did not spread it evenly because I don't have the same tool you use to spread it evenly. I placed a dot on the GPU and a line on the CPU. After checking my temps my min. Temps were 47c - 50c min on idle and max 79c-83c. Is that normal? The brand of thermal paste I use is HY710. I wonder what went wrong?

Hi Shuffle and sorry for the late reply, Even though you did not spread it evenly, theoretically it shouldn't affect temperatures. The reason why I did it that way in the video is for longevity and cleaner results for being easier to clean and re-apply thermal paste when the time comes for a refresh. Besides adding thermal paste to your system, there are other things that might affect temperatures in your system. Couple of examples are: Do you place your laptop in a clean, dustless table? Make sure its always placed in a table with enough space so that the laptop can receive cool fresh air. An external laptop cooler can further help with that (Google "wind pal fs deepcool" for reference). Also make sure your air-fans in your laptop are clean of dust, as demonstrated in the video at 21:40 If you use any software for overclocking your CPU or GPU, if you are not sure what you are doing, stop using them. Laptops of these generations mostly adjust their performance on their own pretty well. Let me know if this helps, I appreciate it :) Take care now!

Greetings Piu, Yes, when screwing the heatsink back together you need to go crossways. You begin by slightly screwing down one end (you do not screw down all the way at once) and then slightly screw down the other corner. You do that 2-3 times depending how slightly you screw each screw down. That way pressure is evenly distributed to the cpu and you avoid potentially damaging it. When your thermal performance is dissatisfactory. In some laptops, never. Once a year is a lot more than you'd need but OP is definitely a tinkerer, so I'm guessing he does it often because he likes to. Download and install hwinfo, run it in sensor mode while you use your computer normally and check your max CPU/GPU temps at the end of the day every day for a week (or forever, if it pleases you). If your laptop cpu/gpu rarely or never exceeds 85 or 90 celsius even under your heaviest loads then you don't need to be messing with your thermals.

Hello Ivan thank you for commenting. While I am playing a typical game (Warframe for example) temps are 55C min - 75C max for the CPU and 46C min - 63C max for GPU. The thermal paste Arctic Silver 5 is very affordable and recommended for laptops. If you are getting temps as high as 100C it could be for a number of reasons: A) The laptop fans are on the bottom of the laptop. If you place your laptop in a place where it blocks the fans, it suffocates the system and raises temps drastically. It is recommended to place laptops like these on flat surfaces. You can even buy a cheap notebook cooler (google: Wind Pal Fs) to raise the laptop even more from the ground and allow fresh air coming in. B) The laptop fans have gathered dust and block air coming in to the laptop cooling it. Follow the steps on the guide here to see how to clean them up. C) You haven't changed the thermal paste for a long time. Follow the steps on the guide here to see how to add new one on the CPU/GPU. D) You used software to overclock the CPU or GPU. Unless you know exactly what you are doing, I do not recommend messing with these stuff on laptops. Laptops mostly come pre-configured from the manufacturer for optimal performance-temps. There could be more reasons why you get those temps, but I would need more information about your laptop to investigate. Try those things out and let me know if you need more help!

@@Navixed Can you use your laptop at 100C? Yes. Will it perform well? No. Low temperatures are important because they keep the system in optimal performance. In others words, if your laptop heats up too much, it will decrease its performance to cool down. This is also known as thermal throttling. Having thermal paste for over 2 years could be one of the issues with your laptop. It is suggested to atleast change it once a year. A full cleanup (like shown in the video) is highly recommended for people who face thermal issues with their laptops. I wish I could help you more but because of the lockdown I have been busy myself with tons of work and I will not be able to reach out to you besides here on youtube. Having said that, look around for articles and videos related to your issue, many face thermal throttling and high temps and there are people out there more experienced than me to help you out in more detail. Hi Clout, If the thermal paste left a "stain" on the black tape which is on the bottom side of the heatsink (referring specifically to here 9:14 ) it shouldnt affect the components. But, if there is enough thermal paste in there to the point that is like a blob, you should definitely clean it. You don't want to make your motherboard being stained with thermal paste everywhere! Hi there Hima, Seeing high temps on booting is normal, your system is loading all the necessary tasks to operate at the start. Idle means that your system has already prepared all of its tasks and its simply resting, thus the low temps. Hope this clears things out! Take care :)

Sebastien hi and sorry for the late reply. If you are trying to apply paste on a similar laptop as shown in the video, you cannot remove the actual cpu from the socket to reveal its pins. So in my understanding, by pins you refer to the capacitors AROUND the cpu chip. So the question now is rephrased to "When I cleaned the paste on the cpu, some paste was spilled between the capacitors - is that dangerous?" Its not dangerous, in a sense that if you use a regular paste it will not be conductive and will not short circuit the chip. But for me I highly recommend to always make a clean job when applying paste. If this paste gets dry by the years and you try to pull the heatsink off, you might take some of those capacitors along the way. And that ain't great news. Let me know if this helped you at all :)

​@@hisdud3ness93 Michal greetings, First make sure you are removing the right screws (see the video from 2:56 and after) Second thing you need to keep in mind is that you can only unscrew the heatsink screws, not remove them completely off the heatsink. (Do not try to force them off, they are meant to stay with the heatsink) Last tip is to remember that the thermal paste that is already on the cpu and the heatsink works as an adhesive kind of. In other words its like glued with the cpu and heatsink. Try gentle giggles on the heatsink back and forth until you feel its finally loose. Let me know if this helped, I read comments frequently.

@@DisassembleEverything I actually had to use little hammer to gently hit the screws from the top and use rubber band inbetweent screwdriver and screw so I can apply enough force to move the 2 screws. Never had an issue before on other electronics that screws were this tight, but thanks for suggestions I successfully replaced the paste and laptop is running much cooler now.

Hi there Ridho, sorry for the late reply. The specific model of mine is the Legion Y520-15IKBN. On that model, it came with an m.2 ssd (you can see it at the bottom left at 2:25) and an empty sata slot, in which I indeed as you said placed a Samsung EVO sata ssd on it. As for the thermal pads, replacing them wont realy affect your systems performance. In theory these stock ones that come with the laptop should last for as long as the laptops lifespan will be. If you see dust collect on these pads, use a cotton swab with some alcohol and it should be just fine! Hope this helps!
