Thank you. That is very kind of you. The popularity of the channel is not so important as the quality of the content, and hopefully the latter will improve. I don't enjoy the process of self-promotion, but anything you wish to do to help others know more about the channel and its content is welcome.

Asalaam alaykum Dr Lumbard, Do you have any recommended academic articles and books for Muslims interesting in grounding themselves within the Islamic tradition and its approaches to the Qur'an, including critiques of revisionist trends & assumptions?

17:50 as per my understanding the statement attributed to al-Awza'i is blasphemous. If that was truly the case then the sunnah would have been included within the Quran itself, rather than being captured in human works of hadith written around 2 centuries of the Prophet's death. Furthermore, Al-Razi would contest this and probably invert this relationship asserting the primacy of the Quran.
@jelumbard4 жыл бұрын
It is not considered blasphemous at all. It has been repeated by ulamā' throughout Islamic history. It simply articulates the principle that for the application of the Quran in practice we need the sunna. That is we need to see how the Prophet followed the Quranic injunctions in order to follow them ourselves.

@@jelumbard I beg to differ, the Hadith literature is subordinate to the Quran and NOT visa versa. I don't see how Hadith collections written over 200 years after the Prophet's death can assert primacy over the Quran. Claiming that the Quran is deficient in detail, hence the necessity of the hadith is as far as I'm concerned a blatant blasphemy. I base this on quran.com/6/114-116 which clearly states the sufficiency of the Quran in matters of al-Deen and demands such belief with the guarantee of Allah's protection, whereas the same cannot be said about the Hadith collection, which not only have contradictions internally, but also with the Quran itself.

You are entitled to your opinion. I am telling you what the opinion is that is shared by the majority of the scholars throughout Islamic history. Here is the pertinent section from the Introduction to al-Qurṭubī's Tafsīr. One of the 10 most influential Tafāsīr in Islamic history. This is inline with the position articulated by al-Bayḍāwī, author of what is hands down the most influential tafsīr in Islamic history. -- If you want to argue, argue with them, not me: “Al-Awzāʿī reported that Ḥassān b. ʿAṭiyya said, “Revelation descended on the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, and Gabriel brought him the sunna which explains that.” Al-Awzāʿī also reported that Makḥūl said, “The Quran is in greater need of the sunna than the sunna is of the Quran.” Yaḥyā b. Abī Kathīr said, “The sunna judges the Book and the Book does not judge the sunna.” Al-Faḍl b. Ziyād said that he heard Aḥmad bin Ḥanbal being asked about this report, and he said, ‘I am not so bold as to say it, rather I say that the sunna explains and clarifies the Book.’” Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Qurṭubī, al-Jāmiʿ li-aḥkām al-Qurʾān, ed. ʿAbd al-Razzāq al-Mahdī, 20 vols. (Beirut: Dār al-Kitāb al-ʿArabī, 2001), 1:74.

@@jelumbard well that wasn't the ONLY understanding, as you're probably well aware that the mu'tazila posed a vehement opposition to that understanding, who clearly asserted the primacy of the Quran over the hadith.
