Non car enthusiasts have trouble believing an engine can work with an odd number of cylinders. There's no reason they can't (I think there's a new Mini that has a three-cylinder), but everyone is so accustomed to them coming in even number configurations.

Ben Wickham: The BMW i8 features a 231 HP 3-cylinder! Although I know the technical details of this car well enough, I still can't get over this. In combination with the electric motor the i8 is the most fuel economic hybrid sports car in the world - this wouldn't be possible with a V6. And in sports mode it even creates its own electricity. But even the 3-Cylinder 12 valve Turbo of the Daihatsu Charade GT ti with 101 PS is impressive. In the 90's nobody cared about 3-cylinders, and nobody thought this engine would be reliable. These guys were wrong.

This video provided an in-depth and enlightening explanation of 5-cylinder engines, and I’ve gained a new appreciation for their unique characteristics. I was particularly fascinated to learn about the distinct firing order (1-2-4-5-3), which helps to balance the inherent asymmetry of the engine. The way manufacturers address the vibration and imbalance issues with engineering solutions like balance shafts is impressive, though it adds complexity. The video also highlighted the distinct engine note that sets 5-cylinders apart, somewhere between the smoother hum of a 6-cylinder and the punchy sound of a 4-cylinder. It’s clear why enthusiasts appreciate models like the Audi TT RS and Volvo 850 T-5R. While these engines may not be as widely used today, their blend of power, compactness, and engineering precision makes them a remarkable example of automotive innovation. Excellent content and thoroughly informative!

Glad the Fiat 20v engine got a mention. they're such a lovely engine in both NA and turbo form. found in the Bravo, Marea and coupe as a 2.0l and also found in the Stilo as a 2.4l. it was discontinued after that. such a shame.

@looncraz6 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I came here to say ;-) Volvo tunes the mounts to deal with the motion. You can get a LOT of vibration out of those motors, though, if your mounts are weak or you go with some more solid mounts. The Volvo 5 cylinder engines have only one mount attached to the transmission - and it's located very near the engine. The far side of the transmission has rubber bumpers and moves around quite a bit. The engine floats on two centrally located hydraulic mounts. One end of the block has a mount at the top of the engine - a VERY soft mount - and the other end has a relatively stiff mount at the bottom center of the engine. The engine is anchored to the bottom mount and bounces and twists around rather freely, taking the transmission along for the ride. Once you realize how the mounting system works you understand exactly why the three non-hydraulic mounts have a tendency to fail so often and why Volvo never changed the mounting setup on those engines.

Fuel economy sucks, and you'd think power should be more but isn't. A 2.5l 5cyl will be less powerful than a 2.5l 4cyl simply because of physics. They love boost though. That same comparison with a turbo is reversed. The 5 sings with a turbo.

Can you explain the valves ? I am still a kid learning about cars (small petrolhead)
@sealifett83957 жыл бұрын
The valves open and close to allow air in and exhaust out...
@Klockorino7 жыл бұрын
Cam shafts open and close the valves in time with the pistons throughout the four cycles. This allows air and fuel to enter the cylinder, be compressed, ignition pressure to push the piston down, and then let the exhaust out.
@Daskellhounds7 жыл бұрын
first off all Wikipedia and engineering explained are your friends. Do you understand how 4 cycle engines work? the suck squeeze bang and blow configuration the valves are actuated by a cam shaft which is driven by a timing belt or chain that goes to the crank, so the RPM always matches valve timing. - In the suck phase the valves by the intake manifold (where your fuel air mixture comes from) open, the piston is going down at this point creating a vacuum that draws in the fuel air mixture. Sometimes compressed in the case of turbo or super charged car - in the squeeze phase all the valves closed are closed. The piston is going up to compress the fuel air mixture. - In the bang phase the valves remain shut as the piston meets top dead center the spark plug detonates the mix, or in a diesel is just explodes because of stoichiometry. and sends the piston down. That'd be your power stroke. - The blow phase opens the valves to the exhaust manifold and the piston now going up forces the combustion products out the block.
@Daskellhounds7 жыл бұрын
the awesome thing about an inline 5 is it's the minimum about of cylinders required to always have combustion happening. Hence the smooth power delivery.

One word Audi Quattro Sport and Evo 2 , best sounding rally car ever , once seen never forgotten . I heard my first Sports Quattro Evo 2 , before I even saw it , on the Lombard RAC Rally Stages , at first we thought it was a car with a miss fire , but it just got louder and louder , then it came round the bend out of the trees with that sound , the popping and banging , the turbo waste gate whistling and wooshing , then in a flash it was past us and vanishing back into the woods , that brief encounter with the winged monster Quattro in 1985 stuck with me for the rest of my life and even though the crazy sounding Lancia Delta S4 was also in the event , the Quattro sound was so special .that is why I will always like the 5 cyclinder from Audi .
