My late Father, my late Brother and myself all worked in the Coal mines here in the UK I left it 1989 I worked at 3033ft bellow ground. The Coal miners I worked with were the best ever, most now sorely missed.

WOW. What you say is true. My family come from Broken Hill, NSW Australia. The mateship amongst Miners is legendary. I was going to be a Mining Engineer but got talked out of it. I became a High School Teacher instead. To my regret, there is only bickering amongst Teachers and no mateship.

Sono film che mi ricordano la mia infanzia (ho quasi 60 anni) quando le persone vivevano i loro valori e per vivere dovevano "sudare", avevamo poco ma eravamo felici ❤

Full respect for you, and top admiration too: all you miners deserved all praise, better reward and safer conditions - which, I believe unless am mistaken, finally came along with nationalisation and thank goodness and the Attlee Government for that.

My father also was a pitman here in the north - east of England, stargaze pit in Ryton, tyne & wear, then Clara vale pit next to River tyne(that's Stargate pit) his brothers also, and my mams dad, Clara vale pit!!! Films like this and "How green was my valley" really hit you emotionally, ad the old sayin' goes, "They were the salt of the earth" bless them all, 🙏😢

My aunt Dilys Thomas is in this film. She plays the little daughter Dilys, all our family have always taken great pride in this. Robson was a total giant both physically and morally. ❤

Nice to have a family connection to a important part of your countries history and such a good movie. First time I ever seen it . A very emotionally moving film and great singing all through it as well. So sorry the UK and Europe has seen its share of tragedy especially since WW1. But the world will have peace in the near future. But only God will make that happen and not by any human or political effort.

Paul Robeson actually did help the Welsh miners. There is a 'Blue Plaque' in his honor in London and a statue in Wales. He also spoke against the people that labeled 'The Bevins Boys as cowards during WWII. They were hired to mine Coal as it was desperately needed in a hurry, but the ignorant hounded them for not going to war. So good to see him in a real acting job- TY!

I can't imagine what people would be feeling watching this film in the cinemas of Britain in those dark and desperate times at the beginning of WW2. A good film and thank you for uploading.

What an amazing movie, on many different levels! Paul Robeson was great as David, and for him to star in an all white cast was way ahead of its time. What a voice he had. And the story had the ring of truth about it. Thanks for sharing it with us!

My granny came from Wales. Lots of Welsh miners migrated to the area around Scranton, Pennsylvania to find work, Polish miners as well. Lots of coal there. My mom turned me on to this movie when I was a kid living in those parts. I saw it on TV when I was seven going on eight. I don't think that there was any notion about political matters in my Mom's recommendation, other than the fact that my mom and pop had just come back from the war against the Axis. The main theme seemed to be connecting the Welsh to singing. Paul was good at that and he was the American connection to it

Thank you! I've been trying to trace a copy of this for years. The "Welsh" accents were a bit creaky and the acting a bit wooden but Robeson's voice like richly spiced honey and the Welsh choir soundtrack makes it well worth it.

A movie with an historical significance. Ernest Bevin, during WW2, was the minister in charge of manpower for that period and many army conscripts were assigned to work in the coal mines for the war effort. They became known as 'Bevin Boys' and remained in the mines well after the end of the war.
@rescuepetsrule6842

Unfortunately for the Bevin Boys, people called them cowards for not joining the Military. They had to endure a lot of abuse until later, when they were vindicated. The same people that HAD to have Coal made them miserable.

Such a hard life working as a miner. The toll it takes on the body. I'm claustrophobic and gasping for air (for them) when the cave-in happened. But it was an important job to do nonetheless for the war effort. ❤️
