The PS2 will always be the greatest console of all time. I still play the system often to this day - in some cases more than my PS4/5. It was such a revolutionary system in it's time, and you can use certain accessories to make it modern. I personally have an HDTV cable for 720p output and the 8bitdo retro receiver to hook up a Dualshock 4 for wireless controls. I'm thinking of getting a Brook Wingman because that one has PS3 controller support for games requiring pressure sensitive controls. Many of the games for PS2 have been remastered, but there are so many great games and series that are stuck on the console - Tony Hawk's Underground and Midnight Club come to mind. There were so many genres of games and innovations that you haven't really seen since. Nearly every game nowadays feels the exact same, but no two games back then played exactly the same and more often than not there was a learning curve to the gameplay loop. The 6th Generation was really the last time we saw that.

So well explained. There's an argument for all 6th gen consoles being the best too, and while some argue PS2 had worse image quality with blurring etc, some games looked better because of it, with an atmosphere, grungy-ness and style that made games appear somewhat dreamlike yet somehow feel more 'real' and tactile at the same time.

You absolutely hit the nail on the head with the limitations breed creativity thing too. Low budgets mixed with limited hardware where games weren't as expensive to make meant that on the PS2, ambition, creativity and uniqueness were REWARDED. The game library is the single most diverse of ANY console, packed with amazing JRPG's, stellar platformers, hype as hell fighters, great racers and games that put their genre on the map
@johanndaart73262 ай бұрын
Practical effects in movies are not a good example, because in modern filmmaking they are a luxury, as they are more expensive than slapping CGI. The comparative example would be a director with a low budget that was forced to use CGI but did that in a creative way to make it work anyway.

Dreamcast, GameCube, Xbox. I had more fun with literally *every* other console that generation. My PS2 was dedicated to playing maybe four or five PSX games and about a dozen actual PS2 games during its *entire* lifetime. Virtually every game I played on another platform, and reserved the PS2 to *only* a couple handfuls of games that literally were nowhere else. And if you're talking sheer number of games available, no classic console can touch a modern console's library of classic games, arcade games, indie games, modern games, backwards compatible games and subscription service games (ie. NSO).

Okay, the Nintendo switch is probably the only modern console that retains the heart and soul of all the retro consoles before it. But I can see your point. I recently purchased a GameCube and I’ll eventually do a review on it, and the same with the original Xbox. So I’m completely open to being wrong about this. Great comment and I really appreciate your watching!

The Switch is the retro king? Talk to me in a few years when Nintendo shuts down Nintendo Switch Online, and the whole eshop, it will all be gone. You can't take anything away from the PS2. Considering the WIi U shop was closed 9.5 years after the console launch, your switch has about 5 years left on this planet. And with Nintendo being so sue happy, you can bet you won't be able to access none of this abandoned content anywhere but where they give explicit permission.

Your point about companies copying each other too much is a huge part of why Nintendo is so successful- they are determined to set trends instead of following them, and unlike most huge companies they have the guts to fully commit to making their ideas a reality, even if it means they occasionally loose a few quid as a result. Also, your intro is amazing! Anyway, good video as ever Danny! I can see why you say the PS2 is better than the latest consoles, and I think I understand why you discounted the PS3 era, but I'd like to hear why you prefer the PS2 over any other retro console?

I still have my copy of the Official US PlayStation Magazine (OPM) that covered the Japanese launch of the PS2. I absolutely could not WAIT to get my hands on this system. And then I did, and it was everything I wanted and more. Going from 32-bit to 128-bit was jaw-dropping. The first time you boot up Ridge Racer V or Gran Turismo 3, you couldn’t believe what you were looking at. Why play on the actual console instead of emulator? The feel. Especially the OG fat model, which was the better looking model between that and the slim. It looked like it came from the future. It had a sliding disc tray with the most ASMR sliding in and out noises imaginable. 8Mb memory was enough because most save files were only a few kilobytes because the entirety of the actual game was stored in the disc you held in your hand. And it was magic.

When you were talking about films and the current state of the film industry, and then went on to talk about lower budgets you got me thinking about how "prestige games" is a term now that didn't exist back when the PS2 was the newest thing on the market. This whole idea of trying to make games higher and higher Fidelity and more and more like films possibly doesn't actually help make them more fun or entertaining in the long run. Frankly, games were better before they had ballooning budgets and live services. There was a time when a game that just lasted us 10 hours but still cost 60 bucks we were still very happy with and could still get a lot of time and enjoyment. Now everything is truncated with live service elements that are even more psychologically predatory than having to pump quarters into a machine to keep playing. We've not only come full circle in gaming, we have completely gone back on it, if that makes sense. Not to mention it was the last console to really provide experiences that were just that experience full stop. Very often there was no multiplayer, although perhaps you had split screen. There were no microtransactions, no DLC, no frequent updates. It was the last generation where the game was the game. Pop it in and play. I do miss it, before the industry had eroded into what it is today. You are absolutely right that the indie space is the best place to look right now because modern gaming is bent on squeezing every last bit of cash out of you that it can.

I'd have just gone with the comparing the PS2 to current systems instead of to film for a variety of reasons. Like, Christopher Nolan uses practical effects whenever possible but they're also expensive, and he doesn't do it due to limits in budget but because he thinks they look better than CGI. He's also destroyed some of the most expensive IMAX cameras out there and pushes to make his movies sound great in theaters but rougher at home. He's arguably probably in the top 2-3 directors this century NOT limited by budget. So indie developers may be like Chrisopher Nolan when he directed Following and Memento, but not now. Sylvestor Stallone needing friends to stay under budget had basically nothing to do with his creative freedom in the movie, he had wrote and pitched the script well before the budget was in place, and the "risk" he was taking was refusing to sell the script and choosing to bet on himself as Rocky. Blair Witch cost 60,000 dollars which makes it such an insane outlier it's practically Flappy Bird territory. I also don't know of any evidence that Jordan Peele wrote the movie with any thought of budget in mind. There's actually an interview with Peele where he said that because it was so low budget, the studios allowed him to stay closer to his script and take more risks on it than they might have otherwise. So, more money would have limited his creative freedom due to studio interference, not the budget forcing him to be more creative. So, I would say that they didn't find success and creativity through a limited budget. They pitched incredible scripts and ideas that happened to be POSSIBLE with limited budgets. But the PS2 IS a great console. ... Would be cooler with better graphics, though.
@RetroRangerReviews885 ай бұрын
I appreciate your clarifying on these points. I don’t think I articulated my point well, but you basically made it here. Focusing on other things than what these particular filmmakers did could have very well affected the quality at the end of the day. Great comment and I really appreciate it!

Nothing beats a gaming PC. I own one myself and it is my preferred (modern) machine in 2024. BUT!!!... I play more on the PS2 in 2024 than modern games (at least AAA ones). The PS2 games going for a more "realistic" style has not necessary aged that well visually. But since so many games of the era used proprietary engines which made them all look and feel unique from each other. And dev's still played around with various art styles and put a lot of emphasis on atmosphere to sell their worlds and not just pure graphical fidelity, have made a surprising amount of games for the system looking really good and timeless except from maybe being a bit blurry on big modern monitors and TV-s. Heck, I played GTA Vice city on the PS2 for the first time and prefer it to the higher res and textured PC port because of the atmosphere. It looks blurry, but the blur hides imperfections and the trails effects, blue tropical fog, reflections, night light, rain and flying leafs and paper in the storms are little details almost not visible in the PC version and it adds so much atmosphere which trumps "realism" and better looking textures and draw distance. The game was obviousley made for that spesific hardware and it shows. I personally am using a 43" Oled TV with composite and it works very well. But would probably be even better on a CRT. The games might feel a little janky and lack some of the quality of life aspects we have grown accustomed to. But they often just feel so more interesting and engaging to play than modern AAA/ big mainstream titles. I tend to find myself playing modern big budget games for a couple of hours and them simpy growing bored and disillusioned for no reason really, and never touching them again. Baldurs Gate 3 being one of the few exceptions of 2023. But despite getting so angry with PS2 games either because of jank, or the difficulty feeling unfair and unbalanced at times to the point that I'm almost pulling out the little hair I've got left, I try and try again or take a little break and keep coming back for more:P

@@Tevron_ Ya ps3 released at an expensive price. How did xbox counter with a cheaper price tag? The 360 released almost a full year before the ps3 so the price was already established. It was Sony's hubris that led to them loosing their popularity with higher pricing than the competition and continuing to try and force complicated architecture on game devs. Sure the Wii went a different route and sold more systems then both Ps3 and Xbox 360 but once the casuals grew board with the console software sales dropped off a cliff. Custom pc build are far more a trend now than they were back then sure we got more pc ports then we used to at the time but most of them were awful slap jobs at best. Ps2 did too have competition, Cant believe your suggesting otherwise. The true reason the ps2 was as popular as it was is because it was the cheapest DVD player on the market and didn't require you to buy an accessory to do it, Xbox you had to buy a separate controller with an adapter and Nintendo had that whole nonsense with a separate company that made a limited amount of GameCube that could play DVD's. Going to go to sleep now, It's 4am here and I'm practically passing out.

@@AnarickTheDevil Xbox 360 didnt counter, they capitalised in the market space. Releasing early as you mentioned and didn’t have a blu ray drive to cut down on price. The playstation 2 hardly had contenders. A water down ps2 (gamecube), a console that lacked games (dreamcast) and an Xbox thats new to the scene playing catch up. Ps2 slapped on a DVD player and ethernet port, put their feet up and drank a pina colada. Lets keep it real. Im not hating on ps2, but to say it had competition is wild. When you compare it to the PS3, it went from hell and back against all the platforms. It does everything PS1 - PS5 does. Nostalgia and modern wrapped in bow. •Freedom to add hard drives and sd cards •No blowing on faulty ps memory cards •No reviving damaged discs with a weak dvd drives •No pay to play online •No limited controller options •1080i/p 60fps was more common •Full backwards compatibility It’s a beast.

Devil's advocate here. (because I myself have a retro console collection). But the argument that playing on console would be better because you can play it on the couch is moot. You can easily have a computer with a wireless gamepad in the living room and let steam boot into "big picture mode". That way you've turned your pc into a console. You can even add your emulator titles there. And they will probably look better, because there's no lossy analog-to-digital conversion involved, and you get the higher resolution of your modern tv for free. You also don't have to pay for expensive used games to play them. Just download the isos. So in a way the pc can be the ultimate (retro)console. But it has no identity. It doesn't have the nostalgia factor.

Gaming Companies back in the good old days showed a lot more compassion and cared about their customers compared to woke companies these days.

The only reason people bought that is for the dvd player I can’t even remember half the games I played because they were crap, I thought the Dreamcast was better for that gen

You may be right, and I’m yet to try the Dreamcast. But I can’t deny the games! Thanks for watching!

In my opinion, the PS2 was the worst of it's generation. Less 480p support than the rest of the generation, more straight up 240p games than the rest of the generation, second weakest system hardware wise of that generation (yet released at the same price as the OG Xbox which was SIGNIFICANTLY more powerful). Honestly, on paper the PS2 should've been a commercial failure. It was a weak, overpriced console that had a pretty bland list of launch titles and a library that focused on very much quantity over quality (seriously, the library is MASSIVE and 80% of it is shovelware). Frankly, Sony's lucky they had that brand recognition from the PS1 and that DVD playback, otherwise nobody would've bought it and would've flopped. With that out of the way, even the worst of it's generation is still FANTASTIC. Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, Kingdom Fucking Hearts, Shadow of the God Damn Colossus, Okami, Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3, Ratchet & Clank, the Final Fantasy titles, Dark Cloud, Katamari, Guitar Hero????? There were so many unique and excellent titles from old and new franchises. I'd take the GameCube, Xbox or Dreamcast any day, but dammit if i don't have a ton nostalgia for the PS2.

Very well said! Thankfully, they were a wide range of excellent, industry changing games for the PS2. Who knows, I might play a different console and realise I was wrong all along!

You are on point mate. I agree that PS2 is much better than PS5. But SNES is the best console of all time :D

I think PS2 atleast wins in terms of sheer ammount of games. Soooo many games on PS2. But overall i do agree the PS2 is a great console.

Yeah, in retrospect, I’ve just focused on modern consoles in this video. There are a number of consoles from around the same time that I am yet to even touch so in the future my opinion could change 🤔

It saved gaming only in North America... Gaming was still fine in Europe and Japan
@ScottFree-GB5 ай бұрын
It saved gaming in America, the NES wasn't that popular in Europe that's why you wouldn't hear some people mentioning it. It's like the console war was more of a war in Europe as the majority of Americans opted for the SNES while it was more split in Europe
