I'm in the market for a new motorbike (after years of riding) and thus watching many, many reviews. Your videos are consistently the best I see: they are built as very well articulated, informative, and intelligent stories that keep us engaged. And the humble tone and presence of yours just raise the quality bar in terms of reporting. Thank you!

When I first started riding years ago the constant thought of wiping out and getting killed was very scary but sobering. It taught me to never be complacent or cocky. More importantly it made me very aware or my mortality and how each ride could be my last as well as my last day of life. I soon learned to embrace each day moment and person with all my attention and emotion. I learned to live in the moment mindfully and gratefully. I continue to ride commuting to work each day through every season (ATGATT) and fun weekend rides with a friend or just errands around town. It has made me a better person. I’m more grounded peaceful and happy. Even when I’m not riding I daydream for a few seconds in my happy place and I come back to the present relaxed and content. Find your Zen!

My wife hates bikes and I have to keep them at a seperate garage in the next town. I was due to go to the lake district on a most important ride and the classic one I had was broken and would not be fixed in time. I was in despair as parts would not arrive in time. I was at work and she phoned and told me she had bought me one which she thought would do. I was shocked and asked her what on earth has she done and what is it? She knows bugger all about bikes and all she could say was it looked nice and was green. I was to go to an address locally and pick her up and go to the address on my way home. I didn't have any idea but I actually thought it was a Kawasaki myself. The bloke was a bit nonplussed but gave a good discount when she had phoned and discussed why she was buying it. Triumph tiger mk1 in lyme green. It did the job nicely

Hey Rocket Man ! I love your videos ! I started biking 60 years ago with a Triumph Thunderbird 650 ccm. In the meantime I had 16 other bikes, mostly BMW’s (and Guzzis and Yamahas). 2010 I realized that Honda’s goal is to make as good bikes as possible whereas BMW’s goal is to make as much money as possible, so I changed to Honda (and never went back) buying a ST1100 (the best bike in my life). The top of my was my last bike, a Honda Goldwing. At 76 I realized that this (in my opinion) best bike in the history of motorcycles was getting heavier and heavier as I grew older. Finally, at my 77th birthday I had to sell the beloved beast as it had got stronger than me. I like animals, dogs, horses and elephants and the Goldwing was my elephant. Today, shortly after my 78th birthday I bought the last bike of my life, a lovely little horse: a CB500X as I said . When one gets older, less (size and weight) has to be more, so I’m now happy with my sweet CB500X and I hope to ride it until my 80th birthday (or maybe even a bit longer). Greetings from Switzerland.

Your comment inspired me to keep on riding, I'm sixty years old, and I did the same thing as you did. I traded my Harley Davidson Street Glide for a Honda NC 750 X with DCT, like you said , less is more , I also thought about getting the CB 500 X but I'm only 5'8", and the NC 750 is a little lower, with 800 cm seat height. I'm pretty sure that I can ride past my seventies with a lighter bike. Have a good one from Brazil.

I saved my money all that summer and bought a brand new 1971 Kawasaki 175 dual sport motorcycle. Woohoo! Look out world! The first time I rode it was the first time I had ever ridden a motorcycle in the riders seat. I had it pointed in the wrong direction and rode straight into a farm fence. Oops. I was 15 also. Dad was USAF and he bought a little Honda 90, don't remember what year it was. He taught me how to ride a bit. We had a Air Policeman (USAF cop) in our housing area. He had a Honda 350 which I thought was just the coolest bike (until I saw Easy Rider LOL). Anyway he would watch me practice and practice. I was too young to get a license. He came over one day and said "I think you're ready to practice on the street. Just be smart, take it nice and slow, follow the traffic laws and learn how to really handle your bike. If you get stopped, tell them to talk to Sgt. Mike. As long as you weren't being stupid, I'll vouch for you". Man, I was in heaven. So I rode, practiced and got as good as I could at 15. Never got stopped. Dad retired and I never got another bike until I was married. Good thing, I would've probably killed myself on one in my 20s. Got a Honda 7504K in the early 80s and am now on my 3rd Kawasaki Vulcan (2009 900). 66 years old and learning more all the time thanks to KZbin and guys like RocketMan. Thanks dude! Anyway, everyone ride safe, smart and keep your cool. Hard with the idiots out there I know. But the point is to be able to ride another day! 🖖

I had a friend with a Honda 90. We would all ride it around his big yard that was full of junk. If you weren't careful you would wheelie and crash. One guy crashed into a big pile of logs and dislocated his shoulder. We dragged him into the garage and, from a pic in an encyclopedia, tried to reset the shoulder. Think it worked but we took him to the hospital in the morning anyway. Those days were great fun.

As a newbie biker ( got my license 1 month ago), I learn so mutch by listening and speaking with experienced bikers. As soon as I got my license I just sold my old car, gather up all the money I had from summer jobs and bought a brand new CB500X (wich is a bike u had). Many of my young friends ( 20’s) don’t understand my choice and why I decided to go only with this way of moving. And I cannot find how to explain to them correctly... It’s all about leaving the comfort zone we are use to be in, leaving the ease, and after all the feeling of power u get from a motorbike. Off-roading is also so funny and increase a lot of skills. I really appreciate your videos and your honesty. Good work dude

Im kind of late to this video, but this topic is close to my heart. My wife developed a major depression and from one day to the next I was responsible to hold everything up and running. Back then when her condition manifested I realized that I’m also no immune to anxieties and I felt and still fell the wall that holds me on this side of the verge. I remembered my time on my Honda Rebel and the feeling it gave me back then as a 16-20 year old boy. I started riding again and it helped me since then to keep me leveled. Keeping me from slipping into my anxieties and keeping me able to hold my family up. I wish I could bring my wife into the motorcycle riding world but her anxieties are still to much in the foreground to even be considered.

37 years ago I was a 16 year old Aussie exchange student in central Illinois in the US. I discovered a ‘69 650 Triumph under a tarp in my host father’s farm shed. He hadn’t ridden her in years and said if I could get her going I could ride her whenever I liked providing I stayed off the main roads. No license of course. A country boy from South Australia having grown up riding, racing and working on bikes I got her running straight away. Through that summer I rode her everywhere, exploring back roads all around Danville. One time after a full day working for my host father re-roofing a barn on another of his farms I took the long way home. It was a beautiful balmy mid-western summers evening, the sun going down, fire flies dancing in and out of the corn fields that flanked the road, the warm wind tugging tears of joy from the corners of my eyes as I wound that old trumpy out to well over 100mph. A benchmark sense of freedom that I now know I am not likely to ever match. But I keep riding and I keep trying! Thank you for a great video mate!👊

Hi RocketMan, I got my motorcycle driving licence back in 1994, when I moved from Germany to Coimbra, Portugal, in the tender age of 32. Made my first 30k kilometres on my beloved Honda CB500, most of them with my lovely wife as a pillion, including a 5.000 km trip in 1995, to my parents in southwestern Germany and back. My mother almost got a heart attack when she saw us arriving, since I didn’t tell her HOW we would come … 😅 Our son rode back to Portugal on that trip; he was born 9 months later. ❤️ Fast forward: after more than 20 years of work, family, building a home and raising my son, in 2020 I reconnected with my best friends that I had back then, Paulo and Zé Carlos, who had brought me to the motorcycling “business” - for which I will be grateful to both, until the end of my days. 🙏❤️. And there, it was again! For me, the most important reason for loving so much rolling and travelling on 2 wheels, is that it makes me a better person. It allows me to be who I truly am, and being able to be who I am, allows me to love me how I am. And that enables me to give love and affection to others. That simple. Safe riding to you, and maybe, someday, we cross paths, somewhere in Portugal! 🙂

Apart from a 10 year spell between 19 and 29, then 18 months in the first half of my stint in Tokyo, I've owned motorcycles all my life. Independence and adventure. I've only done around 250,000 miles in all these years, but it's given me an immeasurable amount of pleasure, and I will continue to ride as long as possible. I am 66. Being on a bike takes one out of the box and immerses one in the experience. A little throttle the front goes up, a hair less throttle, the front immediately tries to dive and shove you into the bars. You can feel and smell and taste the wind, and the environment you ride threw. You put the bike almost on its side in the corners. The asphalt rushing right beside you. The complete sound, and feel of your engine, drive train, and tires. You are immersed in the experience at a level unobtainable in a car. Your eyes always scanning, you miss nothing. You see something pretty you pull over, wherever you may be, take a piss, soak in the scenery. Your brain being mostly occupied with survival and the aesthetics, creates a very serene feeling. All your worries, anxieties etc disappear. Being on two wheels is a beautiful thing.

Fun is my conclusion too. Been a biker since 1974 (73 really but that is prescribed) and just not able to stop. I decided to retire from bikes when I hit 50 but did I? No. Then again a couple of years back when I hit 60 and was seriously ill. Did I? Of course not, could hardly wait until I got back in the saddle. My conclusion is that it is addictive, and almost a disease. One just can´t stop. Sense of freedom and exhilarating fun, that is why. Sometimes even a little terrifying but that only gives a little spice to this life. So let´s keep it up, stay out of trouble and continue for as long as we can. Btw like your videos :)

It began with a mini bike and here I am 50 years later, addicted. Why? Well, I guess I feel so in touch with everything, and I just notice a lot more. It's also, for me, kind of a Zen thing- clearing my mind and improving my focus. I tell myself I'm saving money, gas, insurance, parking. Then, it's just so much fun. Swooping around like a bird and living it up. There's the camaraderie. Every other biker is my friend.

Great video... look forward to more..... Yes it's hard to explain to people why one rides. I got hooked on motorcycles at about the age of 7 (70 years ago!) and apart from some 'bikeless' periods (family and stuff) I have always had one. Bought my first one in 1962, and presently riding a 1988 CBR600 Honda, which is in fine fettle for its age (a bit like me really!) and goes like a rat up a drainpipe, although it could do with a fairing repaint (must get around to that)... that's also like me.... but paint is cheaper than plastic surgery. Ride safe brother... :-)

@RocketMan_Moto You're very kind, wado, or thank you in English. Wado is Cherokee for thank you. Yeah, I'm a Cherokee American combat veteran, so I've been around a bit. I think my experiences have colored the way I choose my friends. The friends I have are guys that I trust with my wife, money, and my life. Those ARE TRUE FRIENDS. My wife has told me that I'm the most careful bike rider she's seen on the roads. She's very observant about bikes and riders. I like your Speed Twin, that's a great looking bike and the Twin is my favorite bike engine. I've got a Honda Shadow Aero that I've had for about 15 years now. I'd like to get a real riders bike. I've been looking at the Honda CB1000R, though we can't afford it right now. We've got a 60-acre horse farm in the middle of nowhere in Virginia, it keeps us busy. This is a fantastic place to ride, with little 2 lane roads and little traffic. I enjoy your videos quite a lot. You strike me as a rare person; honest. Thanks again. Stay safe, be well, and most importantly, be happy.

Great video. Yes your voice is easy to listen to :) Why do we ride bikes ? Don't think I'd describe it as freedom. I would say it's the thrill. The need to be focused on the ride. The inherent danger. Every time I come back from a ride in one piece. That's another successful notch. The sensation of speed on a bike is so much more than a car (at the same speed). You have to balance, control and lean bikes around bends, anticipate bends better. Stuff up a bend on a car and you can often get away with it. That's usually not the case on a bike. I don't know if I should say it, you can almost be half asleep whilst driving a car sedately, and still be relatively safe. Cars have a greater margin of error before bad things happen. That's not the case on bikes, you need to be fully engaged, even when riding slowly. Bikes are a more engaging and exciting ride. Also learners can ride their 125s without having a qualified driver with them all the time. Bikes are great for getting through town centre traffic. Traffic jams are for car drivers. On cost I think bikes are still cheaper than cars. My insurance isn't cheap on bikes yet, I only passed my test last May. So I don't have no claims or experience. It is double to triple my car insurance, but then on cars I've got 33 years driving experience, max no claims and I'm in my early 50s. Bikes, for the same performance level, do use less fuel than an equivalent car. £15K is a fair amount for a bike, you can get a very acceptable new Honda 500 for £6K or 650cc for £7K. £12K cars are at the naff end of the spectrum, reasonable new cars start at £20K, and they will not go as fast as a £7K Honda 650cc. At the fast end, a £20K sports bike has the performance of a £100K plus supercar. If you want speed, a bike is cheaper. If you want to carry stuff around, in comfort and relative safety, whilst being lulled to sleep then get a car ! As for the balance of a bike, it might be partially gyroscopic, but then I've read stuff that says it could be other effects too. It's probably a combination effects. Experts don't seem to be totally sure . www.fastcompany.com/3062239/the-bicycle-is-still-a-scientific-mystery-heres-why

I love riding because of it's autonomy and independence. Of all the things in life one must do for others this is one of the very few things you can do only for yourself and only by yourself! Noone can steer the bike for you and it won't move without you! Nobody there to tell you what to do or to judge you. You must make your own decisions, you are on your own authority. Telling myself I can do it and finding it out so myself was the scariest experience of my whole existence. You can take my bike from me but you can never take the road out of my soul again. Cause when I learned riding I learned to vouch for myself!

Greetings from the great state of Missouri. I always appreciate your point of view in regards to motorcycling. Your right, there is no way that a logical human being would want to ride such a dangerous vehicle. Of course there is no way that a logical person would want to be in the special forces as well. Why would someone want to be in the SAS or the Navy Seals? A sort of euphoria comes over a bike rider that can't be matched anywhere with your clothes on. I fell in love with motorcycles when I was 5 years old. Watching them in movies with a dashing young man and beautiful pillion behind him was exciting to see. When I was 15 I found out that a couple of my friends who were riding age had bikes. I talked one guy who had a Honda 70 scrambler into going fishing. I rode pillion with a fishing pole and a tackle box in each hand. I was terrified at first because I had no way to hang on. I still loved it and was instantly hooked. The other friend rode his dad's 250 Suzuki. It felt like I was in another world. This was 1970 and I had to get a bike of my own. I worked for my dad and saved up enough in two summers to buy a brand new 1971 Kawasaki 175 Enduro. The first thing that I did was run it straight into a livestock fence. My mom was about to die. We turned it around and Dad said to point it that way. You have two acres. I rode till supper was ready. I have loved bikes my entire life. It never gets old. I love your show Stuart. Take care my friend. Vaughn

Reason of emotion is strong enough to counter all other REASONABLE reasons. No amount of poetic eloquence can do justice to the feel of riding a 2-wheeler no matter what our age is or in what age do you live. You love a person not for his or her usefulness in your life but just for the feel of being in the company of that person. Experiences can never be measured in terms of money. Idiosyncrasies are the essence of life and biking is the nectar known only to the bikers. Highways and trails are the gardens we will continue to flock in search of our nectar with our hearts throbbing in tune with the roar of the engines.

My own humble answers: 1) a single simple journey becomes a mini adventure 2) the need to raise attention permanently results in getting disconnected from work or other stress. It makes us rest and relax ; I get the same 1 and 2 when flying planes. 3) contact with the air, the environment, not being trapped, gives a feeling of not being oppressed; the bike becomes a natural extension of the mind and body , it extends our power, and gives an emotional pleasure 4) there is a physical pleasure in riding a bike, like when skiing 5) contact with people: it spontaneously generates contacts when on the road (greetings amongst bikers), but also when parked, being close to the machine, it raises interest from other people, I have seen that fm all ages and conditions ( well, having a Spotless shiny beautiful Triumph Tiger 800 helps ! Ha ha !) Hence the need to keep ones motorbike clean 😉.

And my take on the matter: My first and only bike so far has been a Honda 110cc (one hundred and ten) when I was a Mechanical Engineering student in Tehran. The bike was slow, but didn't bother me at all. I never have been too much into speed either, only when I am testing things; I owned it about 4 years. For the next 27 years in Canada the cold weather proved prohibitive for any kind of motorcycle fancies . I enjoyed my bicycles instead. Now living in Dubai for the last 4 years, I felt an urge for having a motorcycle again. My license from Iran is not valid here, so I had to do it all over again: theory, yard and road tests. Here you cannot take your own bike for training nor for examination. They gave me, and others, an Indian made bike (Bajaj Pulsar 160 cc) which was too small for me (I am 181 cm tall, 33 inches inseam, 183 Kg weight). The bike felt too cramped, a struggle to see what was happening behind me (mirrors just showed my shoulders), a real pain to find the neutral on its rudimentary gearbox, with woody-feeling front break, jerky throttle (perhaps worn down rubber dampers in the rear wheel hub as well), equipped with no slipper clutch, and to make the matter worse, training in 42 degrees Celsius with all gears on......YET surprisingly I enjoyed the experience :), which brings me to your video, "The Psychology of bike riding and why we do it" .... When I think about motorcycles, these are the alluring facts for me: 1- The bike has to feel like an extension of my body. This could be an evolutionary quest/drive to be stronger, faster and jump higher. Being able to chase and run away faster in order to survive, perhaps having serious fun doing it as well. A car is a box, I am not a box; a car cannot go through branches, single track roads, but a bike can, as I do too on my feet. I want to feel free and bionic, not boxed-in. 2- A bike ride, with the riding style that I cherish, is a continuation of my early-teenage-years in summer time (no schools) when I would venture out from one village to another in Azerbaijan (Iran), on a horseback, mainly with no saddle, on the plains, thru single tracks and river beds. I would feel the muscles of the horse with my thighs, and my pants would get wet with the horse's sweat in the hot summer sun. 3- Riding a bike, requires tremendous hand-foot-eye coordination to operate the machine and at the same time, keeping the balance with your upper and lower body. It is a system with instant sensory response / feed-back. Proportionate to your riding style you get instant feedback in your body in way of vibration, G-Force, wind pressure, temperature, etc. This encompassing experience would force you to take your mind off other things in your life; it is in essence an effective meditation. Utilizing your vast physical abilities and sense of balance to operate a motorcycle is healthy for your brain and the sense of balance which you would lose gradually as you get older (use it or lose it). Your brain wold be happy operating a motorcycle and would reward you with euphoria. So it is a drug too. I did order a Honda NC750X about 6 months ago here in Dubai as my second bike ever, and the dealer has promised to have it here in December(after several delays). I ordered it without seeing one in person, let alone riding it (the Covid shortage). I think NC would be a good bike for me. I liked Yamaha Tenere 700 too, the mule-looking-beast (in the absence of Honda CRF300L Rally or Kawasaki KLX300 in Dubai that is). This year Yamaha dealer received only 2 Yamaha T7s which were already booked. I had asked him to give me a call when they assembled one so that I could go over and see how it feels. He called yesterday; I could not ride it because it was already sold. I sat on it and much to my surprise, it felt awfully top-heavy (34.6 inches seat height), and the tank was not full of gas either ??? I assume the bike would feel much lighter when in motion, but as a sedentary experience, I did not feel the bike was an extension of my body. I suspect, perhaps NC750X 2021 would be..... Enjoyed your video RoketMan and much to your chagrin, I subscribed. :(

There was an article about a guy who threw his wife on the back of some bwm touring bike and went to France from Sweden and I thought "Wow, that looks amazing". So a colleauge found a used Yamaha XJ900s Diversion from 1995 and as luck would have it, it was in great condition. I bought it, signed up for lessons and I got my license. I,ve been riding for over 40 years and had over 50 bikes in that time. But I always bought 2nd hand and have never spent more than £7000 on any bike. The newest bike I've ever purchased was a 650 V Strom last year - ex demo for the bargain price of £6300 (and I love it). So just wanted to thank all you crazy peeps out there that purchase new machines for ludicrous sums, many then keep them tucked away for years hardly used in their garages and then sell them on to the likes of me for next to nothing. Cheers. Oh I also think you've a charming voice RocketMan

As a glider pilot I could produce a similar video called: Why we soar. Flying and gliding are very similar btw. We "bank and yank" to make turns but we can go way past 45 deg.We can also carve our mountain course into the sky and then climb back up using thermals or other sources of lift. I'd argue that it takes overall much more skill to pilot a glider well over a couple hundred miles. Try it if you have a chance!

One thing I often find fascinating when speaking with other motorcyclists is that the term freedom most often the case is what comes out of people’s mouths when asked why they ride, but how they define that freedom, what that freedom means to them, how do they achieve it through motorcycling, those sorts of questions to me, reveal a common “truth” amongst us riders, and that truth is that we wish to be autonomous and lead our own lives as we see fit. But to then analyze this question further, this “truth” of mine, is merely seen through my own perspective of what freedom means to me and how I achieve said freedom through riding. I feel there is certainly something there that binds us all together, but to be honest, I’m not all too concerned with answering that question. I think that particular unknown is part of the appeal, it is to me in the least. Happy riding all, and stay safe!

Your spot on mate. There is nothing in this world as rewarding as going for a ride on a beautiful day. Just you the road and ya bike. The satisfaction from flicking your bike from corner to corner, perfect gear changing , braking and just being smoooooth aaah marvellous . You have the riders who come into motorcycling cos it's the fad thing till something new takes their fancy. Then you have the riders who live breathe bikes for a lifetime. To be honest I can't remember coming across a fellow bike rider who doesn't have a big grin on his face. Plenty tin top drivers are just plain miserable. Aaah biker for life 🏍😃

16 years old bought an old cb750 with my own money. Dad went ballistic said if I ever rode it he was buying a life insurance policy on me and waiting for the payoff. Wasn't ready to move out yet so got my real first bike 2 years later and have been riding now for almost 20 years. I've gone plenty fast but 99% of the time not needlessly reckless and have never wrecked. Also my latest bike was used (only 4k miles) so low price and insurance is cheapest I've ever paid. It's my daily commuter and I get around 40 mpg.

I have ridden motorbikes in the past and I didn't find them uncomfortable. As far as stability/safety is concerned, there are certain kind/nature of accidents wherein after analysis of the mishap, you could argue, riding a motorbike would have actually been a safer choice over driving a car. For example: Ability to quickly maneuver through a narrow way which might not present itself as an escape route for a wider car to avoid an accident. I like riding because it feels awesome on a motorbike - posture, riding gear, maneuvers, sound of the engine. Just not on a wet day though.

I am a MSc. In clinical psychology myself and a person who loves to ride, loves bikes and cars in general, ur right man the sense of freedom the very fact that it feels like a stress buster is the reason i am going to end up owning one. The only thing is that its not applicable to everyone and majority of the population will not understand that. Unfortunately its all out the stats.

Why I ride bikes. My 2 older brothers were riding motorbikes back in the early 70's. Mother was not impressed and hated them. Sadly my 2nd oldest brother was killed at 19yrs old in 1973. For years I wondered what could possibly be the attraction to riding such a dangerous machine, I was only 11 at the time and had never ridden a motorcycle. By age 26 my curiosity got the better of me and so I purchased my 1st bike a Yamaha DT175. While it only lasted for 3yrs before mother found out and begged me to get rid of it which I did. Fast forward to 2013 at age 50 and I could not resist the urge any longer I had to get back on a bike and to date I've covered in excess of 150,000km over 4 different bikes. My latest ride is the new Tiger 900 Rally Pro. They are so much in my blood now, that life without them would be torture. My son started riding about 1 yr ago and we have some of the best times riding together. Thank you sir for your video and reminding me why I love riding. My brother is always with me on every ride.

I started riding at 16 and now at 37 I haven’t been riding as long as some but I have been riding for a much larger part of my life than I haven’t. I gave up answering the question of ‘why do you ride a motorbike’ a long time ago. It comes down to, if I have to answer that question then the answer won’t make any sense to you. Either you get it or you don’t. The closest explanation I have come up with is, everybody would LOVE to fly! As a superpower flying must be pretty close to the top of everyone’s list. Well, it’s the closest to flying you can get. That’s all I have 🤷🏻‍♂️

Good point on the prices of motorcycles nowadays, i cannot comprehend why 2 wheels less, no doors , no boot , no windscreen and no side widows no metal roof etc can still cost the same or even more than a car. I wish i can afford a bigger bike but my problem is i couldn’t just stay with one bike, there’s no do it all bike, you get one and found out that its too heavy for everyday use or not very good for offroad or on road etc. The insurance prices and road tax are two much, apart from that in my country the road licence of the bike starts to get higher after the first 5 years , so in 7 yrs time you may end up paying more even that car ....and your not even fully insured!

Thanks for that, Sven. I believe the statistics for motorbike accidents are bad because many riders ride like complete idiots - I see them all the time when I'm out. My instructor told me 'just remember that everyone is out to kill you' and thinking of that when I ride keeps me safe (I hope) :)
