Free speech is the right to speak without being jailed by the government. Free speech does not mean that other people have to accept you as a part of their community if all you do is vomit abuse. If you are banned from a forum for trolling, that's not an infringement upon your human rights - it's the forum administrators doing what is _their_ right to keep their forum clean. If you are confronted with something that you've said because it was offensive, that is also not an infringement upon your rights. Just as you have the right to speak, everyone else has the right to call you out if what you say is unacceptable. If you are fired from your job for making unwanted sexual advances towards your coworkers, that is also not an infringement upon your rights. If you are actively sabotaging workplace relations and endangering teamwork and productivity, your boss has every right to replace you with someone more suited to the position. Free speech is not a free pass to be an arsehole.

In a black and white world this would be true , but people abuse power and can use it to be a massive dick. Sometimes you can be banned simply for not complying with the desired views and ideology of hat group or community , most of the time it's not put on paper or anything , they just make up rules you've violated and get some sort of sick twisted pleasure from asserting their dominance over another human being by being a massive dick or by silencing them and their views. It can be perfectly harmless views , the more dark and messed up views I can understand the moderation of. Its when people who really shouldn't be given power are given power and they abuse it , that's when there is a problem.
@nochill66568 жыл бұрын
How sweet is the low-hanging fruit of using "unwanted sexual advances" as an example? How about when you're fired for presenting a respectful disagreement with a tumblrina's opinions, or when you're fired for telling a "big dongle"-joke without maintaing the 10-yard safety distance from a radfem womanchild? To whom do you give the job of deciding what sincerely held and respectfully presented opinions are _'offensive'_ and fit for punishment and silencing? And how do you define 'offence' in a way that isn't laughably subjective and prone to abuse? *These are the actual subject matters,* and repeating cencorship-apologetic rhetoric like "it isn't censorship if the power structure that is punishing you for your scincerely held beliefs doesn't happen to be the government" only makes you sound like you've never read any of the arguments against your position ever.

I generally find that 99% of trolls can be defeated with utter boredom. Like, if you are trying to troll me and I make it as boring and unpleasant as possible, then you're probably just going to give up and leave. With one or two exceptions, I have been able to combat every troll I've met with this. In some situations it is best to just leave, like if you are in a chat on Twitch or something, just ignore the person. However, there are other situations where you are literally forced to continue talking to them, like if you are in the middle of a CS:GO or Rainbow 6 Siege match and need to talk to your other team mates. In those situations it is best to give simple and short answers that express no emotion at all for the length of time that you are forced to talk to them, be it a few minutes or multiple hours. Sometimes you might not be prepared and will get blindsided, but eventually you will learn to always keep your guard up for someone trying to screw with you. Once you do that, you'll find slipping into your flat, monotone mindset easy and automatic. Get all that down pat and you'll be helping cure the world of trolls one by one!

Yeah, I kinda have like two different kinds of trolling categories. Like there is funny trolling, saying or doing stupid stuff that can be funny and entertaining. Then there are trolls who are just obnoxious, yknow the random people who just join and start screaming slurs, or play really loud noises(after people have yelled at you to stop), and then people who destroy hours of work. Like there is the trolls where everyone is laughing, and then there is the trolls where it's one guy laughing by himself while everyone else is miserable. Like to me trolling can be summed up to a few questions: 1. Is it harmless/easy to undo? 2. Will it's impact be very limited? 3. Will it be appropriate considering the present age group/situation? 4. Do others know that it is a joke? If the answer to any of these is "no", you probably shouldn't do it. You shouldn't throw around slurs on roblox, that's just messed up, just like you shouldn't destroy someone's stuff it took them days to build, and that one joke shouldn't result in, say, hours of clean-up or repairs. Like a jump scare website is funny to me, that's something that's harmless, haha you scared them, but then if someone joins a server and starts blowing up vehicles or equipment that took people hours to get, that crosses a line.

Indeed. I'm not really a troll but I do love writing obviously stupid/ incorrect stuff on the Internet to get a reaction out of people... Is it because I just crave attention or maybe because I like the fact that my (to me) meaningless and empty words can enrage (or generally cause such a huge reaction in) people ..? (Real question) 👀
@metallsnubben8 жыл бұрын
Then you are very much a troll, but of a pretty harmless kind :) I'd say the reasons for it are related to what they talk about in the video, but with a less cruel slant to it.
@Yaj85528 жыл бұрын
Not to offend, but it's because you crave the power. It's either because the power you already have in life isn't enough (megalomania) or you do not really have power over aspects (or the whole) of your life. Power is something I've thought about a lot and it's something everyone needs in their life. We need to have power over something. Whether it's the stereotypical form of power over people or just the fact that you are responsible for....let's say a little brother. That small fact that your little brother wants you and without you being able to drive him from school would make life hard for him, that's all one may need to fulfill the need for power. Some people need more. In the end we need to have power over something, usually this is the reason people cut themselves. It's not always to make the emotional pain go away with physical pain or whatever, it's usually so these people at least have power over something (e.g. their bodies). Suicides kinda follow the same course. So realized I went pretty dark here, so on a high note: What i've noticed is that power is a good thing. I've seen people who have the simple power of being a parent. These parents know that without them the kid wouldn't survive. So they try to be the best parents they can be. I've seen older siblings being knowing how reliant their younger sibling is on them making them better and more responsible people. The feeling of power on a subconcious or concious level is necessary. But we sometimes feel we are without it. So we do our best to regain power or at least the illusion of power by maybe yelling at our dog, or playing some mean prank, or....being a troll. Being able to affect someone thousands of miles away on an emotional basis while you are having fun is a pretty good way to have power. It feels pretty nice. I've done it. But hey this is just a minor part of why you might be doing this. There is of course everything the video said, also entitlement, maybe some sort of Me Vs. Them mentality, or something else entirely. I'm a random guy on the internet and you are a random guy/girl on the internet. I can't really ever know. Edit: thought of another example where power is good. Looke at Donald Trump/Hillary Clinton Vs. Warren Buffet/Bill Gates. All these people have tremondous (apparently I don't know how to spell that word) power but Trump/Clinton want more and you can see the venom and negativity from both of them. While both Buffet/Gates are happy with the power they have, since they are content, they can do stuff to help people. The former still have the need for power, the latter do not. The feeling of power is necessary to do good in the world, and if one doesn't have power, well they will try will try their hardest to get it somehow even if it's enraging internet stragers.
@BlueSun_8 жыл бұрын
We can't answer that for your (Although some armchair psychologists will surely try). You're going to have to use this thing called 'introspection'. You can start by thinking on the implications of one of your hypothesis being true and then judge if those implications fit your profile. Example, if you go with 'craving attention' then judge if that is true. Do you tend do behave in any other attention begging ways? Do you 'suffer' in any way when you are not getting the attention you crave? Do you feel a 'need' for people to acknowledge you? etc... If these are true then 'attention seeking' might be one of the reasons you do it (though not necessarily the only one).

First off, I don't disagree that the term troll is sometimes misused in the way you state. People who are just trying to have a conversation get accused of knowing that they'd get a bad reaction and doing it for the lulz. That said, honest belief doesn't make something not trolling. The question is whether it was posted to disrupt or to get reactions. I sincerely am pro-choice and a Christian. If I made a Christian pro-choice post on a message board known for pro-lifers just to see their heads explode, I'd still be trolling. And, of course, not all trolling is aggressive. I know a place where someone trolled about being a quadriplegic, spun elaborate lies that got people to like them, and then posted as someone else saying they died. Still trolling, without being aggressive at all.

***** I think part of the reason people continue to argue is that they believe that by continuing to comment, continuing to unravel troll arguments, the troll eventually reaches a singularity where he can no longer argue to infuriate the victim. The victim is clearly no longer infuriated by the troll's comments. Otherwise, the victim would have left the chain eventually. A second theory is that the victim learns too late in the game that the troll is really a troll. In these cases, arguing the troll is a troll seems like a cop out to avoid addressing the troll's arguments. This means that the victim is forced into a mainstream view of the world, where no beliefs can be challenged. Some people consider this cop out to be twitter logic, in other words, "I don't agree with you, therefore you are a troll." Calling a person a troll could easily be construed as an ad hominim

Aggressive moderation can actually lead to a special type of trolling: reporting people for rather harmless things, and letting them know you're reporting them. This is used often in Blizzard's games, since Blizzard has a public chat ban on any speech that references bodily functions, or any curse words. Most players don't care about these rules, and these channels aren't actively moderated. But a troll can selectively report targeted individuals any time they say a single nasty word. Even if everyone else in the conversation was casually cursing, only that one person will get suspended. Good times.

Its pretty easy to troll when a lot of people don't know how to respond to it and since theres so much bad advice out there. So from somebody who does troll from time to time I will give you some ways to stop trolls: (Boring but effective ways) 1. quietly get the troll blocked/muted/ignored by as many people as possible (If you announce it the troll will feel like they're winning because they made you mad enough to mute them) 2. get an admin to remove the troll from whatever platform they're on if possible (They might come back but if you keep doing it for long enough most will get bored and move on) (Fun ways) 3. Repeatedly spam the word "edgy" or something similar and try to get more people to do the same (Throwing random insults makes the troll feel like you're frustrated and don't know what to do about it, and by just spamming the same thing over and over gives the troll nothing new to look at which can bore them.) 4. Spam the troll's dms (If the troll is low level enough to be bothered by dm spamming they will probably start to lose interest pretty quick but this doesn't work with a lot of trolls) 5. Find if you and the troll have any servers for forums in common and try to get them punished on there (This is pretty rare to be able to do this but if you're lucky enough to share another server and the admins of that server are willing to go monitor what hes doing and get him punished on their server it can make the troll feel that there are consequences for trolling and will stop them pretty quick. This can also demoralize the troll quite a bit and might prevent future trolling from them for a while.)

I see trolling as a right of passage, if you are offended by a single person - you are not fit for the internet.

I see your point but it's important not to use it as an excuse for the most harmful of it and to remember kids may also stumble online. The human mind isn't fully developed until after the teenage years even so it's only natural for people to take offense sooner or later, even if they are the most hardened of people. Also no reason to just not be nice.

How did they determine who got diagnosed with personality disorders if that study was just an online study of people "self-reporting"? Seems unlikely that they could have great confidence in their data

Psych studies and so called peer verified studies are pure crappola. Two of my psych college proofs admitted in private they thought psych was a fake science. A recent trolling of these peer verified journals put the nail in the coffin for their credibility for anyone with a brain. phys.org/news/2018-10-real-fake-hoodwinks-journals.html

Trolling is as important to net stability as a skeptic is to authoritarian regimes or better yet... Kellogg funded breakfast studies... (not the cyberbullying one though, that's no different from offline bullying) By not having an authority, people themselves can create their own change if these cannot be done, giving up wouldn't be as serious online than offline. Therefore, a lack of authority figures in a place where no physical harm can be made, people can grow and become stronger. This self motivation and not hoping others to do something for you in a world where no one matters is the ideal environment for human betterment.

As every answer in psychology goes: it's both. I think I heard somewhere that one flat earther website started as a joke but you know Poe's Law, so people who believed joined in then the circlejerk began and those who were sorta in denial of a spherical earth found others to confirmation bias the hell out of them. And then there's still the trolls within these flat earther blogs who just incite more and more of this belief throwing in conspiracy theories that they themselves don't believe but the flat earthers take it and again confirmation bias the hell out of it.

The worst trolls, are the ones who, unable to defend their argument in a discussion, make accusations of trolling because, they must win at all costs, even to their own credibility.
@billmorrigan3863 жыл бұрын
Spot on. They can also sometimes ban you, as they are often moderators. Or moderasts as I prefer to call them. They are everywhere. I guess if I start some content on KZbin, I should switch off all commentary 100%. Most of comments, like 99%, is totally useless nonsense anyway as are most videos posted. They bait and provoke people and then issue bans. Folks may end up shadowbanned by the algs just for disagreeing or expressing opinion. I would not want any of that to happen to viewers. The same often happens in live chats. It's better not to read them. I'm still trying to figure out the whole extent of all this situation. It looks like it's getting worse with time. The author of this video, like most people, confuses trolls with haters, pranksters, and people with extreme political views. These are not exactly or necessarily trolls. Sometimes trolls do this: they spam some chat or channel from other accounts, then they report and pretend to help in order to get a mod status and enjoy unchecked trolling and 'spamming their idiotic comments'. They often add a lot of sycophantic stuff to keep the content creators thinking they are good supporting guys who do great job and that they should be mods while in actually they are the root of the problem.

What if some trolling is designed to make people think about their actions, their words, and speech choices? What if one's trolling is designed to cause a person to reevaluate their thought processes, and perhaps have them realize they are in error, or being ignorant? In this situation it is meant to teach.
@ahhwe-any74346 жыл бұрын
Sam Haynes but what about the English professors? It takes time to choose my phrase of words & to damn type it out rather than speak. And they're jumping all over you and it's like F`n chill. I just chose the wrong thing, was a simple mistake, do you not pick up on context or are you just that petty? Or that insecure to pick up on something so little that's what they decide to bash on instead. Forget a point or anything tho.

No that guy trolling that feminist at the end is a pos. His creepy self somehow got a hold of her deceased father, used his image to troll her, & then only claimed he was sorry & realized she was a real person after she had wrote, I guess, a book on him? No what he was sorry for was getting called out. Bc going after her like some stalker, vulture, obvious self hating, insecure creep just to find a pic of a dead family member didn't make him realize she wasn't ever a real person? F his butthurt emotions. That's overboard. Who spends that much energy hating? Like move the f on w/ your life, focus in on your own damn energy, to release it to whatever the f he's aiming for. And I don't mean other ppl.
