@@eowynsisterdaughter That and they figured that Katara just took down an OP (in the village's eyes) waterbender. And Katara did it using a technique that she literally learned minutes ago, against the the techniques inventor. It's just as likely that the villagers wanted to capture/kill Katara for the sake of stopping the spread of bloodbending, but they knew that they couldn't and didn't want to give Katara a reason to use it. Worst case scenario, the villagers were like: "We thank you for saving us, but as soon as the full moon ends, we're going to have to politely ask that you leave the village. Please?" Saying it in a way that demonstrated that Katara was in charge.

It is funny to think that but this series, and this episode in particular, focuses on the theme of looking past prejudices. Many people of the other kingdoms, specifically those who were harmed by the Fire Nation the most, seem to think its a kingdom full of evil men and women who support the conquest of the world. However, in reality, they are just the same as everybody else and just happened to be born into that nation. Hama fails to realize this and believes that the people of the village deserve punishment for the actions of Fire Nation's military as a whole. However, the people of this village don't hate Katara or villainize her because she is a waterbender because that prejudice does not exist within everybody in the Fire Nation. It isn't shown as explicitly in this episode in particular, but in the Painted Lady episode, when Katara revealed she was a waterbender to a village in the Fire Nation, they were more mad about her impersonating their local deity than her actually being from an opposing nation. Most people of the Fire Nation are, surprisingly, not that diehard for the Fire Nation....save the capital city where people are brainwashed to be.

The way Katara stops that one attack from Hama is super Earthbender. A waterbender would have continued to redirect it. Katara’s time with Toph has been good for her and the whole team is growing so much from each other!

@Trashthlete yes without being the avatar, knowing all ways of bending which are different way to move sohuld bring a certain form of balance. because let's think of it for a second. a battle of two benders of the same element is basically decided based on the energy distribution and the control out of the moves. ultimately the best bender are the ones directing the most energy possible with the least movement possible.

Can you imagine how much bloodbending would hurt? A person literally pulling your blood, stretching, contracting, dilating your blood vessels and muscles. All of that tension and forceful movement must cause a lot of pain, especially if you resist. I feel like it was definitely implied here that this technique is very painful for the person being controlled, which just adds another layer to the creepiness and why Katara considers it be extremely unethical.

I feel like if G.R.R. Martin or a competent enough writer with a similar style like him was involved, the ATLA universe could be *WAY* darker if it wanted to. Like the show is surprisingly darker than it seems, specially for a kid show, but it has the potential of the war and other aspects to be more messed up than it alreadt was (like in one of the first episodes of S1, we literally see the skeleton of Aang's closest friend surrounded by firebenders, meaning he most likely murdered all of them by the time he died).

Nothing to do with them being kids. That's like torturing someone. In their world, you can bend almost anything and you have full control of your body. The fact that you can force people to do stuff, that's like saying "brainwashing" is ok. Basically the means are justified by the end result. So in a war, you can torture people, brainwash them, etc. We all know in our world, that just won't fly.

@@90sflower95 You're actually right but wrong at the same time. I never said that the mentality and environments were not factors of them becoming like this. Here's the thing--once you learn bloodbending, you can't unlearn it. So you're constantly feeling and treating people, actual humans, as bodies of water. Katara never wanted this power because it's shown that Bloodbending is inherently evil--that those who have used it were messed up. That is not what Katara aims to be. Also, hypothetically, if Katara used Bloodbending during the war, their side would have been in a hypocritical state because the fire nation tortured their prisoners. They were fighting against them for a noble cause...why would they stoop down to their level? There's a reason why she outlawed it...And also Bloodbending was a part of Amon and Tarrlok's environment, so you're wrong there too.

Technically a lot of fucked up shit could be done with bending. If the benders ever reach a certain level of mastery, earth benders could literally just instakill everyone by making the ground eat them, water benders could rip out all the moisture from a number of people just like what Katara was doing to the flowers, fire benders could manipulate the body heat of people and make them die of hypothermia or make them spontaneously combust, air benders could suck the air out of people's lungs or make those lungs explode.

The reason Katara cried is because blood bending changes you, it corrupts you on the inside. You get hungrier and hungrier for more power the more you use it. Hama even says "I've never felt more alive" and stands taller and looks happier because it's like getting a fix, it's that addictive. In a way, this took Katara's innocence away... The reason for Katara feeling uncomfortable is way more straight forward than you guys are thinking. She was taught that waterbending is healing and life. The extent that the old lady (don't know how to spell her name, maybe Hama) was taking it was repurposing it for destruction and death, Katara didn't like how she could kill a field of flowers, and dominate the body of others in what looks like a very painful way.

@Shanika Blood bending innocent people is wrong, but given the time period they're in where at any moment you could be surrounded by Fire Nation soldiers blood bending is a good tool to have. Yes, it takes away bodily autonomy, but some people deserve it. You can't seriously tell me a tyrant like Ozai who planned on exterminating the entire Earth Kingdom doesn't deserve to get blood bent. Also, for defensive purposes. If you get jumped by 20 fire benders I'm pretty sure you'd use blood bending on them. It's a guaranteed win and the ability doesn't have to be painful. You can control people and simply restrain them painlessly or make them pass out.

@@controlman7490 That may be, but once the war was over, then what? Once someone who has lost all hope gains power, it's very hard for them to let it go. Hama is a good example of this. Her initial reasons for creating the technique may have been justified since she was a prisoner of war, and had to use the resources available to her to escape. Once she did however, Hama chose to use it on innocent people rather than let it go. When you have the power to control others, would you really be able to give it up? When does it stop? This is what Katara no doubt realized and why she would eventually work to see blood bending outlawed.
@controlman7490

@@ThoraxetheImpaile100 Yes, most people would be able to give it up because we're not absolutely demented like Hama. Besides, it was decades of years of abuse that turned Hama into the monster she was. Someone who hasn't experienced that trauma and just learns blood bending like Katara would most likely be completely normal. I know for myself I'd only use the technique on people who are clear threats to me or my loved ones. I'm not gonna be some psycho kidnapping people and holding them in a dungeon. Blood bending should solely be used for good.

With the blood bending thing it’s more based on the person then the actual technique itself. Because the technique itself is cold and it’s really useful, but looking at the person as in Katara who is trying to conserve that “life is precious, love for all” type of view on life (even with a war going on) the action of basically reaching into somebody and controlling them isn’t aligning with her.

For a one time antagonist, Hama was a pretty fantastic character. As we saw, she wasn't always this way, but because of war and how the Fire Nation treated her and her fellow tribesmen, she was warped into this person. It's pretty sad to see honestly, how someone could turn so resentful that they start to do onto others what was done to them. Hama was basically Jet but worse and to the point of no return. And despite Hama being locked away again, she still essentially won in the end. She laid out her terms, which was to bring another bloodbender into the world, and she succeeded. That's why Katara cried in the end. She not only fulfilled Hama's twisted wish, but because waterbending is a part of her, this "evil" technique is now a part of her. She was forced to learn a technique that she never wanted to learn and can never unlearn now. To say the least, it's pretty traumatizing. It's also why I've always saw this episode as a loss of innocence, because it's like Katara was tainted because of what she had to do. Such a dark episode! And bloodbending is only OP for Katara if there's a full moon and she's willing to actually use that technique (seeing as she seems to hate what it represents).

When Katara remarks that Hama reminded her of her grandmother, she is holding a cabbage shaped like Kanna's face. This is considered to be one of the darkest episodes in the series, as this was a Halloween special released in October 2007. It has many of the conventional elements of a horror film. This episode called into question whether the Avatar receives a boost to his/her power from the full moon like 'normal' waterbenders, and by extension firebenders with the comet, as Aang could not break free from Hama's bloodbending while Katara could. Although Katara uses bloodbending in a later episode, this is the only time the technique is actually mentioned in the series. This is the second and final time that Toph is seen blushing. In Hama's flashback, one of the villagers surrounding Kanna is similar in appearance to Toph, while another young boy has a warrior's wolf tail hairstyle like Sokka's. Kanna herself is sporting hair loopies like Katara. This is the only episode in Book Three that references episodes from Book One in the "Previously on Avatar ..." section. This is the fifth episode that does not appear in a "Previously on Avatar.." recap. The others are "The Great Divide", "The Fortuneteller", "The Northern Air Temple", and "The Painted Lady". This episode was included in the digital compilation NickToons Spooky Halloween on iTunes from 2009. Aang does not bend any element in this episode.

There's a theory that says Hama is the cause of death of Katara's mom. When Hama escaped, the Fire Nation thought she would return to the South Pole, so they went to Katara's village in search of her. The Fire Nation wouldn't know about Katara, she was too young. They were probably searching for Hama. They probably killed Katara's mom because they thought she was the powerful bloodbender that escaped and they wouldn't risk locking her away again.

Hama is the reason Katara and Sokka's mother was killed. Before Hama escaped, they were still taking water-benders hostages. What changed? Hama didn't kill those guards, they saw what she did, they knew what she was doing, they realized that it was dangerous to leave water-benders alive, that her knowledge could get out to the world. They checked the first place Hama would've went back to after her escape (probably after scouring the coasts, rivers, ports, harbors, military bases, maybe even the colonies, etc.) the Southern Tribe. The raiding party leader never said they were looking for a child. He just believed it was Kya. He knew they were looking for an adult woman. Say there was a bounty put up with an image and general description (water-bender, long dark hair, fair-skinned, dangerous, in her 40's-50's, if you have any info please report it to the military, etc.; but the info on blood-bending was like top-secret cause if that info got out, it'd cause hysteria), Katara being like 4-5 would've been cleared. While Hama was hiding right under the Fire Nation's noses, fear and paranoia within the Fire Nation army lead to them to continue committing genocide.

Some see the technique as evil yet I still don't see the problem in it. If I were a waterbender I'd be happy to know that shit. Katara was shown blood bending as something evil when it's also a good thing. So I don't feel that it's a messed up things since nothing is just only used for evil. Realistically blood bending would be real help in the medical field. What if someone has a blood clot somewhere? With blood bending can help blood clots by unclogging them real quick. Blood bending probably could help against blood disorders too. What if someone body part is messed up and they're trying to get it to function again? You can bloodbend the body part by slick moving it a bit to help them regain some strength in moving it on their own. What if someone is having a heart attack ? They can blood bend their heart back right and probably lower their high blood pressure.

I like to think Hama just "played the villain" and let herself lose so she could pass the skill. She had the skill for years (in a land of so many guinea pigs). I think Hama taking control of Aang and Sokka was so Katara would experience the feelings necessary to learn the skill. I think Hama's goal was for the skill itself to survive because her generation of benders got wiped out. It could've made Katara sick to her stomach or disgusted with herself that she never uses it and that would be enough so long as someone knows how to use the skill. Lock it away in a forbidden book or whatever so long as it's not FORGOTTEN or lost to time. Think about it. She may not be a water bending master (like Pakku), but she had ~60 years to master blood bending. In that time you would think she would learn to bend herself (her own blood) to defend against other water benders (or any other blood bending trick). And just like you guys said, blood bending is just so against Katara's nature. It would be like Aang using earth bending to beat Toph when she was training him.

I'd say reaching into somebody and forcibly controlling their body is a very dark kind of power. The kind that, once you've done it, you don't just forget it. Your conscience forever knows that you've crossed that line.

Btw a fun fact about the raids. The reason they raided is because if they assumed the airbending avatar was dead, the next avatar would be water. Seeing they dont have a chance against the north they went for the south taking every bender in hopes they were an avatar

Also don't forget that blood bending could be done only during the full moon, cause many people forget that. The other dark thing about blood bending is that it could make people mad with power, just like Katara said "To reach deep inside someone to control them". Blood bending is not only the dark side of water bending, it could also be the bright side if used in medicine, imagine just how easy it is to stop bleeding. All in all, it's the user that matters.

Blood bending could reach so much higher potential in a more mature adult swim setting. Just imagine entire armies of soldiers having blood ripped out of their eyes, ears, nose, and mouth as their bodies are literally bled out to death. That shit would be Castlevania levels of brutal.

Thinking about this today: the White Lotus considered bringing Hama in, but Pakku (b/c chauvinism) and Jeong Jeong (b/c of her rage toward fire benders -- and it doesn't help that JJ and Iroh were both in the FN military) decided against having her join up. Thus, this OP woman is holed up here: taunting innocent civilians.

Blood bending is the classic “the end justifies the means” debate. It’s also a slippery slope that can potentially lead to rationalizing all kinds of horrific acts.

I feel so bad for Katara because Hama was so manipulative and abusive. Imagine finding someone who can teach you about your culture and they trick you into performing so evil. Katara is still a child, no matter how mature. Hama is a POS. Also, that scream Hama does when Katara flips her shit makes me LOL everytime.

In Korra the bending is even more fleshed out even air bending is terrifying. And high level bloodbending pretty much can only be stopped with the Avatar State.

Also according to the creators, bloodbending is the only bending that can cause insanity to the user. Everytime you use it, it apparently degrades your mental state a little more.

With blood bending, you can suck out their blood. You can make them internally combust, or you can make them break their own bodies and limbs. Literally folding them the way your body is not suppose to be folding. If this show was something like AoT and not a kids targeted show, they would’ve definitely done that.

Now that I think about it; the water nation has no business losing right next to a vast ocean while standing on a water ice glacier. There were so many creative opportunities Dudes could have made a localized storm Frozen them like what happened to azula Turned the ice under them into a surface as slippery as an ice rink Im pretty sure you could freeze the water vapor in there lungs or maybe frozen the water in their eyes and blinded them Ice spikes from the ground Turning the ice underneath them to water Also aren't their ships STEAM powered?

It's the moral aspect of bloodbending that fucks up Katara's mind; the "forcing your own will over theirs" part. When you battle someone 1 on 1, you're on even ground, but when you bend their blood, that's another story. Also, look at airbending. Aang could probably just pull the air out of every enemy's lungs straight up, but do you expect him to do it even if they're in a war? And if he did do it, would that not be fucked up? It's straight up murder. It's like playing chess: both sides need to have their pieces. If you have your pieces but take away the other side's pieces, is it really fair to call yourself the winner? Also, I don't blame Hama for what she became, even though it's ridiculous to punish even the innocent bystanders just because they were born in a nation they didn't necessarily choose to be born in.

Hamma escaped the fire nation, so they went looking for her. They go looking for her in the southern water tribe. They know how dangerous she is( blood bending) so they're going to try to kill her. Only the southern water tribe has no idea of hammas ability or escape. Kataras mom says she's the last water bender and says take me as a prisoner, "sorry we're not taking prisoners to day" (cause they know how dangerous the blood bender is). Up until kataras mom died, the fire nation thought they had all the southern water benders, cause up until katara hamma was the last water bender.

Blood Bending would be valuable not only defensively/offensively but medically too. Imagine having the ability to break up blood clots and heal clogged arteries with that kind of bending. Katara's pain is from being violated. Her trust in Hama, her ability to say yes or no to doing something she considered amoral. Psychologically what Hama did was harmful but hopefully Katara doesn't allow it to corrupt her.
