Mark, this is the best and most helpful dog training video that I have ever seen, so much so, that I intend to view it again so that I get the leash training right. Thank you.

What an amazing display of dog behaviour and what we need to do as handlers to help our nervous dogs. I really like how you explain the big picture and the little picture all in one session. Subscribed!

Mark I think this video has answered the questions I needed to ask, and I can see where I have been going wrong. I have always been afraid of ruining my relationship with my dog and losing its respect and the bond between us if there is any form of correction. I have been so conscious of not making the dog afraid of me and losing the relationship completely. Also I have been very aware of not stopping the dog barking (its positive reinforcement or desire) to get rid of the things it does not want or is afraid of (its negative reinforcement). However, I can see that you are not being too aversive and as you say, if the dog knows the lead pressure is coming from me to direct the dog in situations this is going to help me and ultimately the relationship will get stronger. Thank you.

what ruins the relationship is not guiding the dog and allowing them to stay in high stress. Saying no to a dog is a great thing for dogs, gives them clear understanding of what you want. letting them figure it out for themselves is harmful to dogs because they cannot think the way we can

Just came across your channel today and have been using your techniques on my labradoodle. She was previously on a harness and pulled like crazy. I would have to roll the leash up so she wouldn't have the freedom to pull. However, after switching to a slip leash, it has changed the way she goes for a walk tremendously. I usually don't post on KZbin videos, but dude I'm really happy I found your content. Thank you Mark for making these videos!

I've had a similar thought for many years. Dogs have different abilities to understand cause and effect. Long ago I got a Great Pyrenees as a puppy. She was ALWAYS afraid of slippery floors. Her viewpoint seemed to be that the floor was attacking her, and the more afraid and nervous she became, the more the floor attacked her. Now I have a giant old bulldog. He is crippled and uncoordinated, and when he's excited about food, he slips and falls on the floor. But he knows this is HIS fault, and he never thinks the floor is attacking him. He knows the cause and effect. Some humans have little understanding of cause and effect. Hence... witches.

I am confused. If you take a walk with a slip-lead. Do you let them pull or do you stop? How do you teach the manner of going for walks when you are trying to build confidence in a reactive dog? Would love to see a video/explanation of how you would just take walks if you have a dog that is reactive/pulling. Are they allowed to go around and siff, what if you are walking towards a dog and your dog is stiffing up, do you apply leash pressure?

My problem is up close. Passing on trails and such. Shes wants to say hi to every dog which obviously isn't always welcomed. Shes fine, no barking and no craziness until they are right next to her. Her protest is to just lie down qiietly until the other dog is right there🤦. Then pop goes my weasel. Shes 5 and still Miss Social butterfly. Its who she is and no amount of treats will change that. You have to work with the dog you have where they are at. On leash tho many dogs are not ok greeting where off leash they are. It makes it hard on trails when you pass so close to each other and the other owner does not indicate their dog isn't good in close quarters. I don't ould love to be able to work on just passing by others but its impossible without dogs that are calm. We are healing from TPLO surgery but soon we can get back out again. I forsee a bit of reeducation in my future as im sure she had forgotten a few things🤣.

dogs wanting to meet and being friendly about it is one thing that is not too bad. when the dog is lungs and barking and showing teeth and going wild that's something that needs to be addressed. sometimes we have to see the limitations of what we have and what it would take to change. I don't like putting too much pressure on dogs later in life as long as its not a dangerous looking situation

How about inside? My puppy keeps a leash on and is restricted in the house, but I don’t keep her attached to me the whole time. Should I?
@markdubose1986
@markdubose1986 2 ай бұрын
this comes down to case by case situation. if the puppy is on the move and getting into everything i would have a leash to help guide them away from getting into what i don't want. the more you help them learn the rules of the house the faster you'll get results. this is not something that in two weeks will be good but give it time. a crate works but it doesn't allow the dogs experience. its just a time out and the dogs most of the time need years until they are good in the house with still a learning curve

So wide collar is equal to a rubber large bit in training a colt... vs put a smaller bit ( dog collar) in a horses mouth.

Hey Mark , I am from India and has been researching to understand the dog . My dog is awesome with people children , my real motive from my dog is to be off leash and be a dog . I have an American Akita breed , the only issue I have , he just want to go for fight especially with male dogs . I have slip lead , prong collar and also e collar . I never used e collar , he is very selective with dogs , surely can’t trust him around dogs , otherwise he is super good , even he doesn’t pull till he sees other dogs , cats and also he does fence fighting , it will be great if you could help like , what can I do to make him off leash 🫡
@angelinacamacho8575
@angelinacamacho8575 3 ай бұрын
the issue with akitas is that they were bred to fight other dogs. dogs who were bred for that i would just keep on a long line and let the leash drag so if he tries to run off you can grab the long line.

@@angelinacamacho8575 yeah , but their should be an way to communicate with them to be neutral and just have fun . I have 30ft long line and we walk run in morning like 3 to 5km everyday . Then he sleeps till evening like a baby . I have no other issue , he is super awesome . Just want him to be Offleash , means recall should be 100 percent .

Lots of times dogs being full off leash is not as fun as it seems to be. Some dogs get more stressed because they have to think too much about what to do and that can cause them to have issues. If you are running its much better in my opinion to have them on leash, i prefer a harness and a bungee leash hooked to a belt on me. That way you can guide the dog if they try to run after another dog or small animals. do this for a year or more daily and you'll be able to see where your dog is to be off leash and running. The running without the leash is hard because the dog gets super excited and that gets them to chase stuff that darts across the path you are on. Id have off leash stuff where no one is around and let him have a little time running free like crazy.

@@markdubose1986 thanks Mark , I seen a lot of videos , now his place is good , he can sit calmly , and if an dog goes through the fence , it wanted to go , but controls and sits on the place , I have kept him on slip leash , all the time beside me, taking him more places and trying to expose him to more places , after 3 weeks , his tendency to attack dogs is less , I will keep on doing nothing and let him decide to calm down . Thanks a lot 🫡. As you said and I am also sure , this one or 2 session fix is absolutely foolish 🙌 it is an commitment and we should always learn and keep on improving dogs life and also improve ourselves on how we should deal with dogs everyday 🥰

I’m trying to understand this video. So the shepherd is good off leash because he goes far away from the dogs. But when he is on leash he behaves this way? Is that right? Now, if you have had this dog god a while why didn’t you address this before? Is it because this problem just started or is there a reason? Again, no offense here. I watch all your videos and have gained a lot of knowledge but I didn’t quiet get this one. Thank you

I’d have to make a video talking about this dog. He’s not a pet dog. He has work to do and he is trained much different than a pet dog. I do not work my working dogs the same as pets. Completely different approach with very different expectations.

@susanlippy1009
@susanlippy1009 3 ай бұрын
Type in slip lead online. They are still sold. Every vet clinic uses them. Dogs at show use them. Pet Stores are playing politics and are not carrying anything that is politically charged. Leerberg and many others carry them. Amazon still had them last I looked but I haven't looked in a bit. Most catalog companies have them as well. Search by slip lead not leash.
