I think the main difference is that they have no style in their mustache, or their clothes. They wear the worst outfits. They wear thin mustaches when they should be thick, and thick mustaches when they should be thin. They curl their mustaches up because they want to look like old timey "gentlemen" but they are faux-gentlemen. They are masquerading as something they are not.

You really simplified the history of facial hair in the 20th century. From the 1920s to the mid 1960s a clean shaved face was the preferred style (pencil-thin moustaches had a moment in the 1930s but that was it). In the late 1960s moustaches and beards became a symbol of rebellion and "alternative"/hippie/rocker style... And it was in the 1970s that the moustache became trendy and associated with machismo (lacking any hippie connotations). The 2010s had a late 1960s/early 1970s rock chic revival that brought facial hair back into fashion... What I see today is machismo coming back into the zeitgeist and so are the moustaches as well

I’m a young man who grew up without much of a social media exposure/presence. I adopted a mustache independently before I found out about this sort of trend online, since I thought (and still think) it’s a fairly simple, elegant form of facial hair that many of my own older male relatives (mainly on the paternal/Italian-descended side of the family) have had in the past. When I found out about it, it’s made me a bit frustrated at all these other young guys ruining a good thing, but it’d be stupid to let a lot of idiots decide how I’m going to look. I think sincerity is a key part of this whole thing, and somewhere along the way a lot of people just lost the memo on that.

Good callout on the horrible abuse of moustaches. But there are a lot of mistakes too that I have to point out. Moustaches (or at least not a full beard but a trimmed style) have been popular in many periods before post ww1. For example the ancient slavic Lechans wore large moustaches which carried over to their descendants, the sarmatians. Fun fact, the reason why Nietzsche wore a moustache in that particular style was because he believed himself to be of Polish descent. 16th century Valescian beard and stache combo was popular in western Europe. In the Napolenic era, the elite and wild cavalry, the hussars, wore large moustaches inspired by Hungarians. The moustache symbolised a mix of wild untamed with a suave ciilized look. Also, in ww1 more than hygiene (I mean louse were always a thing so that didn't change with the trenches) it was gas. You couldn't get a tight seal with a mask if you had a beard, for this reason soldiers had to shave. French were even known as Poilu, the bearded ones because they wore massive beards. The trend in 90s/2000s was metro sexuality. The trend of men taking care of their hygiene and body hair was seen as gender transgressive. Oh, and you pronounce Europe and Europeanize wrong. I don't think you can fix these mistakes by now, but I hope you'll do a more thorough research next time. Effort pays off. Good luck!
@De_Futura14 күн бұрын
Sarmatians were an Indo-Iranic people and they predate Slavs in recorded history. Moustaches were common in the Gaulish cultures that existed before the Roman conquest. From what I can tell this is the earliest time when moustaches were widespread in a particular culture.
@nilsmadej909114 күн бұрын
@De_Futura you are correct. However, there is a popular academic theory that scythians and sarmatians are ancestors of celts and slavs, respectively. Furthermore, even if that isn't the case, the Polish nobility of the 16th century believed themselves to be descendants of sarmatians, hence me referring to them as such. As for Gauls... they might be, but I would suspect that there may be cases of widespread moustaches prior, however not that I know of.

I absolutely dispise the whole Peaky Blinders aesthetic, but it should be cool. I honestly think it's because we Millennials are a mix of being super low-T and the most bland pretentious personalities. Most Millennials and Zoomers are low T man-children with no identity and place. My one buddy is in his early 20s and he rocks the mustache, but I think that's because it's really a part of his culture; he's owns a concrete business and lives in the middle of buttfck nowhere. Another guy who I occasionally see at my Greek monastery has the whole Peaky Blinder aesthetic. I hated it until I talked to him and found out how chill and respectful of a guy he was. Like someone commented here "it's not just about the stache, it's even more about the head it grows out of" You nailed my sentiments on this topic. Thank you. 6:39 His personality sucks as much as his aesthetic.

I mean.. Do what you want. If you can grow a sick mustache grow a sick mustache. If you want a mullet, grow a dirt nasty mullet and do burnouts in the Walmart parking lot. You're going to rot in the dirt one day, live life and have fun.

It's not the moustache, but the man it's attached to!

My mustache is glorious and timeless.

Its not bold statement, its atempt to stand out????? Those are the same things. Only difference is your atitude towards them.
