I genuinely don’t understand why this is regarded as a mystery- like… she told people where she was going, she was in a very reasonable accident, she lived to tell the story after she was PICKED UP WHERE SHE SAID SHE WOULD BE. Like… if they had just immediately checked in on where she said she was right from the beginning it wouldn’t be regarded as a mystery like it is. Just because she writes mysteries doesn’t mean everything that’s ever happened to her has some ulterior motive

Everything about her story doesn't add up, and nothing about her accident was reasonable either. The car was precariously teetering on a cliff, in a very dramatic and extremely unrealistic fashion. For the post Mortem: There is a rare disorder called Dissociative Fugue where someone can forget their identity. It is marked often by childhood trauma, but can be caused by a singular traumatic event traumatic event. The person makes unplanned or unexpected trips or wandering and sometimes forms a new identity. This fits with Agathas story. The car crash, her being suicidal, could have caused a fugue state. But whats odd though is Agatha was found where she said she would be. Also, the fact she used the last name of her husbands mistress. She could have been in a fugue state and those be coincidences, but it seems odd.

Maybe there’s a little bit of her memory like at the back of her mind where she knew the hotel, the mistress, but just doesn’t have the consciousness to know what it meant. Just like what the boys said. This happened actually (a bit) to me before, dealing with childhood trauma and a sudden big traumatic event brought me to a similar situation that I only was able to “get back” through long and intense therapy.
@ADDICTb2st3 жыл бұрын

She packs a bag, drives probably a bit off, walks to the train, vibes for a couple days, and feels better after coming back from being “off the grid.” I give her props
@midnight34583 жыл бұрын
It could also be a psychological thing, she was so traumatised by her mum's death, her husband's cheating that her mum had warned her of, that she wanted to sort of run away. But instead of planning it, it happened unconsciously and she wanted to get rid of this life, which is why it may also have taken her a little time to remember this life too.

For people who don’t understand how writing more than 2 books a year is impressive: Most books, especially debuts, can take all from a year to 10 years based on the author. If you’re contracted to a publisher you will have a deadline which is usually a year if it’s in a series. Personally I’ve been writing on a 7-part story since I was 15 years old (19 now) and though I’m a young writer the way **I** personally write means the whole story has to be on some level done. Which means it’s gonna be a while before they’re even considered being published. Her writing more than one a year shows that it was her element and that she was so good at her job that she didn’t have that type of writer’s block most authors/aspiring authors have

For Post Mortem: Not exactly a question, BUT- Christie wrote a semi-autobiographical novel called "Unfinished Portrait" that was published in 1934 in which the protagonist (Celia) loses her mother (with whom she was very close) and soon after discovers her husband was cheating on her. In the novel, after trying to keep the marriage together for the sake of her daughter (her husband wants a divorce so he can marry the mistress) and dealing with severe insomnia, she has a breakdown and tries to drown herself. She's rescued but she spends a lot of time afterwards in a sort of fuzzy state of mind. Even though Celia doesn't disappear in the book, that sounds really similar to what Agatha Christie described to the newspapers. Afterwards, she goes to Switzerland to recover before eventually getting a divorce. The book also goes into a lot of detail about Celia's emotions and mental stress at the time, so the memory loss theory makes a lot more sense once you read it. Even though there are some differences in their actual lives, Celia's personality is pretty much exactly what Christie's was described as in the episode (shy, imaginative, interested in writing and literature) so you could sort of see it as Christie explaining her point of view through the character? Idk I just wanted to bring up the book since I haven't seen any mention of it in the comments yet lol. #buzzfeedunsolvedpostmortem #Postmortem

the vid said she learned to read because she was understimulated. and it seems like beyond that she had a pretty great relationship with her mother. also writing mystery novels because her sister thought she couldn't? i think that was probably a push to do something she maybe has always wanted to do. not saying she didn't shame her husband because honestly... i'm not mad about that. but i find this a pretty big jump esp since these events are from when she was much younger

Assuming she only taught herself how to read because her mother wouldn't teach her is a huge jump in conclusion lmao, she probably just wanted to read. If it was only out of spite she would've stopped right after showing off to her mom. Same thing with her sister, talented people are often competitive, so the challenge could definitely be an incentive, but that doesn't mean it was out of spite. It's incredibly out of character for her to be experiencing pain, loss and probably depression because of her mother's death and also have the energy and mental fortitude to plan a convoluted revenge plot against her husband. Also, why would she use his lover's surname as an alias if this was really a revenge?

This episode is a goldmine of insight and wit! Here’s what stood out to me: Agatha's act of spite-driven resilience is just iconic. The image of her teaching herself to read and then writing mysteries purely to prove a point is both hilarious and inspiring. And that theory about her faking the whole disappearance for some much-needed R&R? Honestly, relatable. The police's baffling refusal to believe her whereabouts ("I'm at a spa" / "No, you’re not!") adds a touch of comedy to the mystery. The comparisons to "Gone Girl" and dissociative fugue are fascinating and really highlight how trauma can manifest in unexpected ways. Also, can we take a moment to appreciate Shane's knowledge of obscure 1920s songs and his oddly wholesome yet cynical takes? It’s proof he’s a timeless entity sent to both torment and enlighten us. Which theory do you think fits best? Or do you believe Agatha's story at face value?

For post-mortem: I've had severe depression most of my life. At the worst point, I got off work one day, got into my car, and started driving until I was in a different state (6 hours). These things happen with mental illness. I don't buy memory loss, but admiting to a breakdown in the 1920s would have killed her career. Mental illness wasn't understood; it was a weakness of character. She had to say something to save face.

I think she may have been trying to confront the mistress, but under all the stress, she snapped on the way there and tried to drive off the road, but it brought her back to reality, and decided to just take a break from it all, and decided to lie for the reasons you stated. Either that or the same thing but instead of looking for the mistress she was just straight up looking for a vacay.

[Edit] okay I definitely want them to talk about this in Post Mortem…. but this sounds like full blown dissociative fugue. “Dissociative fugue is a psychiatric disorder characterized by amnesia coupled with sudden unexpected travel away from the individual's usual surroundings and denial of all memory of [their] whereabouts during the period of wandering.” “One or more episodes of amnesia in which the inability to recall some or all of one's past and either the loss of one's identity or the formation of a new identity occur with sudden, unexpected, purposeful travel away from home.” This is usually brought on by emotional trauma like the death of a loved one. With her mom passing, her husband having an affair, and a suicide attempt, I’d say she had quite a bit of trauma that could trigger this. Her forming a new identity also leads me to believe this

I agree. I think it was simply a mental breakdown. I'm not a psychiatrist obviously so I have no idea if what she experienced is consistent with a mental breakdown but that is what it sounded like to me. She was overwhelmed and felt the sudden urge to get away.

For the post-mortem: Couldn't this just be a case of her wanting to get a divorce and needing the public to be on her side for the sake of her writing career? The last name is so so clearly a hint to the woman he cheated on her with. She could both expose him AND do it publicly enough, while having an alibi, that she'd be able to divorce Archie without any concern. Divorce was a pretty touchy subject, and kinda taboo, especially in more religious, rural communities. I find theory #2 to be the most persuasive.
@HerHollyness3 жыл бұрын
I’m sort of inclined to agree because divorce for women had only just been introduced in 1923 and only on the grounds of adultery, so she had valid reason. BUT public opinion about this event at the time was largely negative as people thought Christie had tried to frame her husband for murder. What I think happened is that her husband asked her for a divorce just before the disappearance so he could marry his mistress, but Christie knew that if *he* divorced *her* it would entitle him to half her estate and, as she was the wealthier of the two, she wanted to divorce him instead. So she planned a public kerfuffle so that he would want to avoid any more scandal and thus agree to let *her* divorce *him* on the grounds of adultery, which is ultimately what happened in 1928. She kept her estate and custody of their daughter; he married his mistress a week later.

I think Agatha was stressed, overwhelmed and depressed. With her mother's death, cheating husband and the responsibility of raising a child and writing her books, she felt overwhelmed. I believe she planned her disappearance to get away from her stressful life and responsibilities. She wrote a letter to her brother-in-law so nobody in the family would worry. The husband's letter was probably Agatha telling him that she knew of his affair and wanted nothing to do with him. I think she always planned to come back because she sent her schedule to her secretary but because her disappearance became so famous she used memory loss as a cover up so she wouldn't face any consequences for the uproar her disappearance caused. #postmortem Love your videos btw! Post Mortem: This sounds like case of dissociative fugue. People who expirience it suddenly leave their home and their lives. Because they suffer from amnesia, they come up with new identity. This usually lasts few days, but there were cases of people with dissociative fugue that started completely new life :new family, job, identity. It's usually caused by trauma or severe stress like all dissociative disorders.

She could have genuinely intended to go to a spa when she had the accident- or written them to try and hide an attempt at suicide. When she then had the accident and entered a dissociative state the intention to travel to yorkshire and go to a spa might have remained. As shane and Ryan said, sometimes you do things on autopilot without questioning them, and it could have been a subconscious reaction to her intentions before she lost her memory.
@aryan-lo8ri3 жыл бұрын
for post mortem: she could’ve had a manic episode triggered by the death of her mom and archie’s affair the episode could’ve also triggered the memory loss that was initially caused from the car crash. i dont think she would pull a stunt to expose archie or to boost sales because her theory of memory loss has risks of the public deeming her as mentally ill, i think the risk of pulling a stunt like that outweighs the benefit so i think it was a genuine episode.

I believe she got the revenge she wanted. When her scumbag husband remarried one newspaper actually posted about his wedding and how the bride was a spinster younger than him named the same name that Agatha Christie used in the hotel and that said bride was with him in a party in the moment that Agatha Christie was gone missing. This is history and online now. The mistress' name is everywhere even today. And to make it worst Agatha worked with Nelle planning events for kids.
