I'm going to mass manufacture these and call them "Outstanding AF" bows because that's exactly what they are. I've spent $100s of dollars on bows in the past and this is just as sufficient at taking down game as any of those fancy expensive bows. Thank you for all you have taught me through your videos. I've been following bush crafters, primitive survivalist and outdoorsmen for many many years and none carry the knowledge that you do.

you can up the draw weight by heating the ends and bending in to a recurve shape also fiber glass tent poles are good to bundle up and push inside the pipe for extra resistance, also spoons flattened and cut to shape make excellent broad heads, all the best

Awesome instructional video, sir! My neighbor has a yard full of bamboo trees...hmmm, wonder if bamboo would make a nice strong bow(?). I made a nice spear out of my bamboo hiking staff using a Cold Steel hollow handle knife; takes just a few seconds to assemble it and secure the knife with a bolt/wingnut. A crutch cap protects the spear end when I'm hiking. In the other end I store a small emergency survival kit (test tube) and my bamboo chopsticks :) An old Rx bottle caps this end and it's wrapped with the 2 inch camo duct tape from Walmart. The bamboo serves another purpose if I suspect a bear is close by...not only do I yell "hey bear" but I shake my hiking staff up and down causing the chopsticks to rattle. It works! The handle part of the staff is wrapped with 15 feet of 550 and a loop is towards the butt end used as a lanyard of sorts; keeps my hand from sliding forward should I actually have to thrust my spear forward in a defensive posture. Anyway, I love watching your videos as you offer some very valuable information. Thank you.

Great video as always Cpl. While an uncomfortable subject for most pet owners including myself, I want to thank you for opening the subject of harvesting domesticated animals for food. Many of these animals will be running wild and no longer cared for and as formerly domesticated animals they will not be able to fend for themselves in the wild so to speak. Due to this fact, many will be starving and malnourished and going down the slope to a long and painful death. In many ways a very quick death such as you suggest will in fact be a very humane end to the animals suffering as well as a food source for you and yours. Thank you again for your interesting and instructional videos and most of all, thank you for your service.

One thing to keep in mind, having done several of these, is that paracord stretches horribly. A much better cordage for the string is bankline or some other not so stretchy cotton cord.

I got 15 feet of dyneema line. It's expensive but incredibly strong.
@haroldbrown58872 жыл бұрын
And my experience I've yet to find a line that does not stretch. That being said you could go with a steel cable , or do like everybody else myself included and just tighten the line as you need it. This is a field expedient weapon otherwise known as an improvised weapon and one thing that you do need to understand is that in a situation where this weapon may come in extreme usefulness you need to have this kind or a natural recurve bow simply because like my compound bow all other compound bows need modern arrows to use an improvised arrow is asking to hurt yourself. So if you don't take time to learn how to make these weapons try to care carry a recurve bow with you at all times you can always make arrows then, and believe me you will lose arrows someone get broken some will get bit some will go flying way off course but you will lose them!

There are several documentaries showing natives using 25-35 lbs bows. That I am to lazy to locate. Instead of being used on small game. As always your videos are "outstanding." And may we all be more knowledgable, prepared, and relatively safe.

Point of fact that I always find amusing: Whenever you see videos or articles that state THESE ARE THE WEAPONS YOU NEED IN TEOTWAKI! It's always a list of weapons like AR15s, Kalashnikov knock offs, pistols etc, etc. I'm no Fudd Gunner but... A recurve bow or crosdbow or reliable self bow so you have a quiet weapon you can make arrows for. Compounds need not apply. A single shot shotgun with a conversion kit so it can be muzzle fed. Most muzzleloaders fit in this space after the shotgun but smoothbore is more universally useful. Slings, staff slings or slingshots. I want a bow

Real nylon paracord isn't the best choice, but if you do have to use it, it helps to stretch it out before hand or leave some extra length to help tie it shorter once it stretches from use.

You could use a file or hacksaw to cut a small notch just above the midpoint of the bow, which will give you a shelf to rest arrows on, instead of shooting them off your hand
@cpd8334 жыл бұрын
That was a good bow making video. 30-40 lb draw weight is about right based on the type of fiberglass rod. Arrows are more difficult to come by as well as the broadheads. Dave C. taught me about trapping. Tim Roper (aka: Meat Trapper on youtube) showed me trapping for food and how to prepare it.
@baron81076 жыл бұрын
Nice. I actually forgot about these. Armguards and quivers could probably be made by taking two pieces of thick cloth ( i.e. denim), and stitching them together over a cardboard frame. Might be good to glue some plastic sheeting around the cardboard beforehand, to give it more moisture resistance.
@zyriab57976 жыл бұрын
Hey man, you can make an arrow holder (going on the bow) with flip-flops ans zip ties. Gives you better mobility in woods than a quiver and you always have arrows with the bow, that way :)
@baron81076 жыл бұрын
Zyriab Rubber exercise mats and pieces of foam would do a better job. In the context of SHTF, standalone quivers provide a more convenient means of carrying other essential gear, like a small file for sharpening your broadheads or a small firestarting kit, if you prefer to hunt in lightweight, quiet loungewear.
@mikegrossberg86246 жыл бұрын
A quick bracer(that's what we archers call an armguard); get a metal ruler, cut off a piece as long as your forearm(or whatever length you feel comfortable with), file a notch at the ends, on both sides, and use cords, laces, or whatever to tie it to your forearm. The bracer I always use is one I made, by sandwiching a steel splint between two layers of soft leather

Here in South dakota a 30 pound draw is the legal minimum to hunt with . . . deer or smaller . . . the right broadhead or hell, even a bad broadhead will work. if your using anything like a 350 to 435 grain weight arrow at that draw, you have an adequate FPE to take down a large critter . . . . .

Having "attempted" construction in making a breakdown bow design, using four 3/4" diameter fiberglass rods, and a center HD plastic hand grip (and arrow rest) you have great options. If you can get a 3/4" diameter solid fiberglass rod (from TAP plastics), cut to the PVC tubing length, you can slide the rod into the entire length of the PVC pipe. It slides well, and with some superglue poured down the tubing, push and rotate the fiberglass rod quickly into the tubing. This will make an entirely secure (no noise) and cemented fiberglass rod and PVC tubing unit. The PVC piping protects your hands ever after from any fiberglass splinters. Acquire the 1" diameter "+" PVC joint. Slide this down the PVC pipe, adjust to your center nock position, (and PVC purple glue) cement the connector on that location. This gives you both left- and right-handed shooting capability, but also if laying on your back, you can align the arrow and bow so that you can shoot with your feet holding the bow, while pulling/releasing the string, Rasp and notch out the arrow rest positions on the cross-arms. With two 3/4" PVC end caps, cement and cap the fiberglass rod inside the PVC piping. You are completely done, except for rasping the bowstring notch, and stringing the bowstring. This PVC plastic-and-fiberglass rod, makes for a very strong hard-pulling and -hitting bow - upwards of 50-60+ #. The bow can take the full-out strain of a maxim pulled bow, that would bend and break a normal or modified flat PVC tubing bow (shown in various YT vid sites). The maximum flexibility and recoil of the bow is from the fiberglass rod. No more melting and flattening out the PVC tubing, as some vids have done. And this same PVC piping is a good walking pole, or a hand-to-hand bow staff weaon (any idea where they named the weapon with that name?). It has a whack stronger than getting hit by a golf club, pool cue, or a baseball bat. It also comes in nice and handy, when hiking, and a rattlesnake (or poisonous snake) is on the path. You can slide the bow and bowstring over and around the head of the snake - then decide whether to remove the snake to a safe distance and let go - or whether you like snake-chicken and bam!bam!bam!, you have the hobo stick with a snake hanging off the end. With other small mods, you also have your small fishing pole (with great strength). Have a series of fishing pole eyes, a fly fishing reel, and velcro lashings from a kit ruck, and attach eyes along the length of the bow. When finished fishing, remove the eyes, fishing reel, and velcro lashings back into the kit ruck. Now hang the fish from the hobo fish-carrying pole. The bow also works quite well for mini-pole vaulting over small creeks and wetland areas. You can even reach up into the high trees for whacking nuts and picking fruits. With other trap mods, you can use the bow for a longed trap to slam down on a critter. The same design can be installed along a trail, and sprung, deals a lethal blow to a small critter hit on the body, .... or a 2-legged marauder getting one or both legs broken from the lashing. If you have some thing like a luggage scale you can ballpark your draw weight on a self bow without too much trouble: 1) Nock an untipped arrow and come to full draw, noting how much of it protrudes beyond the grip. Grab a Sharpie or something and mark that point. 2) Leaving the arrow shaft on the string, hang your bow from an elevated hook at the nock point. Note: if the string slips from the hook you can easily injure yourself in the next step and will have failed in more ways than one. 3) Attach the scale to your grip and slowly pull downward until the mark on the arrow shaft is at the front of the grip. 4) The readout on the scale should approximate the draw weight of that bow for your draw length. Second note: An unfletched arrow shaft that is too stiff or too flexible for that particular draw weight will yaw either to the left or to the right in unaided flight. You can stiffen the shaft by shortening it if you have enough arrow to work with. Last note: Please don’t hurt yourself doing any of the above.

Bow on the ground, foot on the center, string hooked to a scale (digital luggage scale, hanging scale) pull up, read what it says. If you can't see the reading, set up a camera and shoot video of the reading. It's not quite the same as being in the correct position for shooting, but same distance of pull will give you the same reading in any orientation. Wild guess based on pulling a 40 and 60 pound bow.... 35-40 pounds of pull. I'd like to do some archery, maybe a longbow....that can be an expensive investment, for minimal use. Your design? I'll bet I've got everything I need to make either. Thanks.

72 hours is about correct. I live in Florida, land of the hurricanes. Last time we were hit (by Irma) it did quite a bit of damage but nothing like a major disaster like Andrew or Katrina. Staple items and long-term storable foods like eggs, milk, bread, meat and canned meat (especially), canned soup, granola bars, bottled water, etc. were wiped out quickly and not available again regularly for a couple of weeks. I had to drive about 20 miles before I got to a gas station with gas and there was an over an hour wait in line. Remember: this was only what I'd call a minor disaster and a local one at that.

Did you make your arrows and if so would you consider showing a video on that process as they are a critical part of a successful bow.
