Just a comment to your last sentence in the video description. Tesla's aggressive pricing should be celebrated by potential buyers. Puts pressure on manufacturers to lower their margins and puts pressure on dealerships to lower their "mandatory add-ons" and potentially sell cars at or below MSRP.

Thousands less than a Model Y? Wait till the end LOL. This was filmed prior to the price reductions on the Model Y but we *finished** the video after the price reduction so the new pricing is factored into our wrap up!

You forgot to pin this. For many buyers who qualify for the credit, the model Y actually experienced a $20,500 price reduction in a single day. It's impossible for any imported vehicle to compete with that, and nearly impossible for many domestic vehicles; especially if they don't qualify for the tax credit. The price had to be cut to $55k to qualify for the credit, but I'm not sure why they cut them to $53k. Now the AWD version is $45,500 after credit, and the performance version that doesn't qualify for the credit is $57k... $11,500 more. What in the world! They also increased the price of the third row option by $1000, from $3000 to $4000, making it the most overpriced option I think I've ever heard of in recent memory... outside of FSD. (For reference, the EQB's third row option is only $1250) Still, it'll be hard for a lot of people to pass up this deal, whether they can stand Elon Musk or not. After credit, it's the cheapest price the model Y AWD has ever been... when only 1.5 months ago it was the most expensive its ever been. Insane.... I imagine Tesla must have been vastly oversupplied versus demand. With their Texas plant now churning out about 150k model Y's annually and still ramping, with them building up a 60k vehicle inventory in the last 3 quarters (globally), with the economy heading into a major correction, with Musk's twitter antics / toxicity and repeated lying, and with their share price dropping (lots of shareholders buy lots of Teslas, and they're not happy with Musk/Tesla right now) the company didn't have the demand to move all of their supply. To maintain such high production growth, Tesla's cell order contracts from their suppliers must be massive and must be set to continuously grow month to month. They can't simply slow production growth to match demand, they have to keep pumping out more and more vehicles or risk building an enormous (and growing) battery cell inventory. Unlike other OEMs, they don't have a dealership network to offload inventory to and spread the financial burden across during a slow sales period; any inventory is on Tesla's books, which could be devastating on their quarterly financials. (Seems the dealership model isn't so silly after all.) Tesla has no choice but to drastically lower prices/margins on their cars to make certain they sell out. Maybe they'll make a tiny profit on them, maybe they'll break even, or maybe they'll even take a bit of a loss. Any of the above options are better than building up an inventory that they can never get rid of and taking huge losses. Super funny that Tesla stopped allowing customers to buy out their leases at the end of their terms, so they've likely been building a large used inventory of lease turn in vehicles that will also see their prices drop by a healthy amount to correspond to their new vehicle prices, along with just about every OEM now building inventory and lowering prices, and the prices of the used market tumbling over the last few months. How about Hertz anyone? They gloated about buying 100,000 overpriced model 3s starting in late 2021, the year of the crazy Tesla price hikes. (No doubt, their massive order helped push up the prices and push back the wait times) Supposedly they continued buying into 2022 as well. Rental companies typically only keep cars for 2-3 years, so in about a year or two when the company starts selling their fleet off, hooo boy could they take a big loss.
@updlate4756
@updlate4756 Жыл бұрын
To make matters worst for Tesla; wage inflation has likely lead to Tesla hiring some pretty expensive manufacturing workers in their Texas ramp up. In economic contractions, companies usually layoff higher paid employees, then after the recession is over, they start hiring them back and lower wages. Tesla may not be able to do that because they can't afford to slowdown production. This is great for workers, but will be hell on Tesla's financials. Too bad, so sad. It's very possible that Musk simply didn't realize potential customers don't like him, or the the customers didn't believe that they'd have to be 'insane to buy anything other than a Tesla', as he famously said in 2019 when claiming a million robotaxis would be on the roads by 2020, making their owners $30k a year.

@updlate4756
@updlate4756 Жыл бұрын
@@RichardSalmore Which part of my statement would you like me to back up? I certainly will read their financials, as I always do... ;) Keep in mind, those financials are for Q4 2022, not for Q1 2023 when they massively cut their prices. There were some price cuts at the end of Q4 as well, but nothing like their cuts at the beginning of Q1. Tesla Energy is a break even division at best that Tesla uses to offload excess cells to when they can't build enough cars for whatever reason. Since Tesla's cell orders need to continuously grow month to month, so too must their vehicle production, and if they estimated higher vehicle production, then they likely have a huge surplus of cells. The only way to get rid of that inventory quickly is to undercut competition, who are typically for-profit solar installers or battery producers who depends on their battery storage products to make profits. Tesla doesn't need their battery storage to make profits, so they can always bid the lowest and guarantee the contracts / retail sales. The silly part is how terrible Li-ion cells are for battery storage... They're extremely expensive compared to other energy storage solutions. What a waste of lithium-ion cells... However, this practice does help Tesla drive up their gross vehicle margins. Larger consistent (and growing) cell orders means cheaper cells for Tesla. Excess cells are offloaded at cost, leaving lower cost cells for car production, leading to higher vehicle margins. That was all well and good until Tesla's vehicle demand failed to keep up with vehicle supply and they had to massively cut their prices.

Hey Alex, just a quick request/suggestion. Your “vehicle length” comparisons (at 1:17) are always the best, but could you also include a ICE mainstream vehicle like a RAV4? I know the intention here is to compare against EV segment competitors, but it would be helpful just to have the mental reference to something that’s super well-known.

I’ve had my Q4 E-Tron 40 (rwd) for over a year and 15k miles and it’s a fantastic family car. Real world range is between 220 and 270 miles, but with a bit of effort I’ve managed to get it as low as 130 miles and as high as 290 miles (videos on my channel). We went for the Q4 over the ID4 because we preferred the styling, the HVAC controls and the infotainment/virtual cockpit setup. We also preferred the Q4 to its other MEB based rival the Skoda Enyaq. All three are virtually identical in interior dimensions apart from boot/trunk space. Price wise (in Scotland )the RWD is significantly cheaper than the Model Y, but after the price drop the AWD 50 no longer has a price advantage. At that price point I’d probably go for the model Y.🤔🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Depends on your family though. Lots of reports are now coming out that Model Y interior materials are not very sturdy and don't age very well. My -lovely- family would probably make quick work of it. The one thing that every reviewer I have watched never speaks about is after sales service. I don't know what it is like in the USA but here in Canada Tesla aftersales service is not great at all but service from Audi is over the top fantastic. If you ever get into an accident with a Tesla, well good luck to you and the same goes with any service issues. With the Audi, the experience is 100 times different and you have way less down time. That's why the insurance for an Audi is way lower than a Tesla. We absolutely love our Q4 e-tron 50 Sportback and have zero regrets in buying it.

Just test drove the sport back version yesterday. The fact that it is NOT a Tesla is what I like about it, plus the comfort, luxury, handling, styling… My only gripe is they have 5 “sport back” variants sitting on my local dealer’s lot and no normal ones currently, and to me it looks like an ugly Tesla knockoff for $5k more and less headroom. The charging is ok (“middling” is quite apt) but I can charge at work easily, and a 30 min charge session is nbd to me if I take it on an occasional trip.

Alex, I would love to see your ID.4 vs Q4 comparison. I have ordered an ID.4 ProS AWD and ended up not waiting for it and getting a Q4 50 Premium Plus, just before the Tesla's ball drop. Despite some obvious material cost cutting in the Audi's cabin (esp. door panels) I find the interior design worthy of the luxury segment. The steering seems lighter in the ID.4, and Audi has an obviously better software- and dashboard design. But then, there are also these incentives ID4 does qualify for. What's the better buy, according to you?
@davidnielson9139
@davidnielson9139 Жыл бұрын
I too wish he would have done more comparison with the ID.4 -- particularly since the two are both built by VW on VW assembly lines (much like the eTron RS is an Audi version of the Taycan). It seems like there are advantages to the ID.4 -- including both price and free charging (which he did mention) -- and also the massaging seats on the ID4. Also, with the current ID4 being assembled in the US, it gets the tax credit while the eTron does not.
@disla25
@disla25 Жыл бұрын
@@davidnielson9139 sure, it's a very sensible comparison. I just tested both back to back and have to admit that, despite the similarities, Audi does feel more premium, mostly due to the real leather seats, better overall interior design (although the dash and door insert materials look less premium compared to the VW's leatherette), better driver display and overall software/hardware approach with buttons, where needed. Audi also has a more expressive exterior design, although the large fake grille is a matter of taste. I also liked Audi's solid stance, VW seems lighter and more playful, it's a bit louder at speed (Audi has dual-pane acoustic glass windows). However besides massaging seats, VW also has park assist that Audi lacks. Both are in need of multi-view cameras or at least the front view one - my Bolt EUV's software, auto-selecting camera views based on the front/reverse shifting, its auto-on heated seats/st. wheel and efficiency analysis display is far better than both of the above VW Group siblings.

@@disla25 The top end ID4 does have 360 cameras, as well as three zone climate control and heated rear seats. I don't doubt the Audi seems nicer -- it should for the price difference. The top end ID4 RWD and AWD are roughly the same price as the equivalent base Audi Q4s. Considering the European ID4s have always had the same heads up display, in most ways the ID4 has been better equipped than the equivalent Q4s (other than maybe in the US).

Good. I hate most modern evs due to them being tech showcases. Just give me a damn regular car with a battery instead of a gas tank. I'm gonna be holding onto my 2020 ioniq EV for this very reason. Maybe when the base model EV pickups roll out and I can get one that's isn't designed by a child with a technology obsession

While looking at EV's recently, we immediately disqualified this one because the dash is so awful; geometric plastic angular bits tilting in all different directions. It's really a huge miss. It's not a nice place to sit at all. Feels more Toyota than German on the inside. Another weird thing is that you can see the exterior paint color around the door jams on the inside of the car. Cheap. And the software is extremely dated. Have they not seen Rivian and Tesla?

This seems like a really hard sell vs an ID4. The styling isn’t substantially better, especially with all the tacky black plastic and fake grill on the front. The interior isn’t substantially better than the ID4 except for the gauge cluster . It’s smaller than the ID4 in actual, usable space. The performance, battery size and range is all similar (probably slightly worse) than ID4s with the same drivetrain/battery. I just don’t see the reason to buy this over the ID4. Just brand snobbery I suppose. For the price of this thing, I don’t see the reason to buy this over the egmp cars. Even my boxy Ioniq5 gets about the same range as this (with a smaller battery in the Ioniq5) but the Ioniq5 charges basically twice as fast 10-80% and comes with 2 years of free charging. Styling is subjective, but the Ioniq5 and EV6 both look better than this inside and out, and they both cost less. Of course, with the recent Tesla price reductions, the Model Y has also rejoined the chat to become competitively priced with other EVs in the same category (finally). If you’re ok with the bloated Prius styling of the Model Y and the overly harsh suspension, that might be a good option as well (especially with the built in route planning and Supercharger access, better for ICE converts who don’t want to think about where they’re going)

The Q4 could have been a good car but is ruined by Audi cost cutting, fit and finish is not up to Audi's usual standard. Compare the fit and finish inside an S-line A4 to an S-line Q4, then compare the standard equipment and see the long list of things you don't get in the Q4, even down to only 1 reversing lamp and no clamps in the cup holders! But it's totally ruined by the software, so many bugs, lack of functionality compared to the competition and worst of all Audi don't update it.

The Audi Q4 E-Tron is a good car, not a great car. Cheap plastics in the lower door trims and grossly over priced options that push the 50 S-Line over £ 60K is hardly a ringing endorsement for a small family SUV.

@@tonyn3227 depends where you are and what spec you get. I live in Scotland and I’ve had my Q4 40 (rwd) for over a year and 15k miles. It’s been fantastic. Far more practical than a Model 3, and far cheaper than a Model Y. If I had the money for the Q4 50 though I would probably take the Model Y instead as prices are close following the price drop. Infrastructure over here is pretty good with non-Tesla chargers available in a lot of locations, and a national network (for payment, the chargers are privately owned/operated) which can be accessed by a single RFID card or app🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Hard to get excited by anything Tesla makes as long as that lunatic Musk is the CEO. He has an annoying tendency to run his dumb mouth and make the resale value of his cars drop. Random price drops don't help in that regard either, and I would feel very much betrayed if I just bought a Tesla and he dropped the price 5-10K!

The love Audi seem to have for all these fake bits seem to have no limit. Note to Audi, get rid of the useless grill and fake intakes. Its not the 1970s. Anyway, I pretty much stop listening at under 300 mi range. Less than that, places it squarely as a strictly commuter vehicle. Test have shown that the infrastructure isn't reliable enough to use an electric vehicle on a road trip.

Hard pass. 👎🏿 Crap range, fugly, and grossly overpriced. 🤮 GM Equinox is $25,000 ( after government rebates), massive 513 KM range, large dealer network, and looks better. ✅

LOL, There is a reason that the base Equinox is $25k. Crap interior, 0 miles of electric range, seems like a crossover version of an economy car.
