How do you make sure length or width are positive ?

Same for -c/a, what does it means when c and a are positive
@Harumy0810 Жыл бұрын
@@guiguio2nd1erThe sign shouldn't matter but in this case, c and a are both positive. It's just that he transpose c to the right side of the equation so from being positive, it turned into negative. And as I've said, sign won't matter because, suppose c is negative, then it would be ax²+bx+(-c)=0 and transposing c to the right side of the equation would of course make it into positive and -(-c)/a is indeed positive. You can try that with a and you will get the same answer. As for why the length and width are positives, well there's no negative area, is there? Also in lines, negative just means they go to the left/down side of the origin so why not make the origin such that all lines will go in the positive direction, just to make things easier.

Like what @Harumy0810 wrote, the signs does not matter. «Negative areas» as you might think of does not exist in the physical world. The same goes for a negative number. What is a negative apple, chair or an atom? We use negative numbers to represent the «mirror opposite» of positive numbers. Taking a number and adding the «mirror opposite» (negative of that number) will give you zero. Therefore, c/a has to be the mirror opposite of x^2 + bx/a in order for x^2 + bx/a + c/a = 0. If (c/a) happens to be a negative number, it means that (x^2 + bx/a) has to be a positive number and vice versa. Visualizing negative numbers om the numberplane can be done by rotating the positive number around origo 180°. Multiplication can be done the same way. -2*3 = -1 * 2 * 3 = -6. You scale 2 by 3 on the numberline, giving you 6, and imagine -1 tells you to rotate it 180° around origo (0, 0) and you have -6. Same goes for multiplying negative numbers with each other. -2*-3 = -1 * -1 * 2 * 3. Scale 2 by 3 and rotate 180° for the first -1 (you’re at -6). Rotate one more time for the other -1 and you’re now back at 6. I don’t know if this answered your question. Feel free to elaborate if it didn’t 😃
