The British royal family follows a very strict set of traditions in their burial practices. In this video, I explore what is meant by the term 'lead-lined coffin', by looking at the historical evidence for the coffins of the English and British monarchs from the reign of Henry Tudor through to the early nineteenth century

This excellent and informative video reminded me of a limerick I heard/read, I cant recall which, when I was a t school. 'There once was a man named Fred, who awoke in his coffin of lead, "It's cosy enough" he replied with a huff, "But I wasn't aware I was dead"'.

That was an incredibly interesting video to watch, thankyou. In 2020 we were in Dublin (we are from Western Australia) and we took a tour beneath the church of St Michel (I think) and the coffins under there were draped in the same red velvet only where they had broken open at the corners you could see old dried legs and feet poking out a bit. There is also a terrific crypt where there is the mummified body of a nun, a crusader and one other that I don’t recall. I find this subject fascinating.

The parish I served in as a curate had the winter quarters of a number of Showground (fairground) families. Funerals are traditionally a splendid affair, with folk coming from afar to participate. And the (oblong) casket MUST be lead lined - demanding a lot from the family members as bearers, and from the Undertakers who lower it into the grave. Thank you for your fascinating videos (& The Antiquary, which is a monthly treasure trove).

Something to touch on, is the unique British style coffin you guys use, the Lancastershire as is called in my circles. Their a single piece sided coffin that is bent around the base as opposed to fasceted coffins that are typically mitered. Its quite interesting to learn about. Also, interesting how the old practice of embalming is way different from how its done now.

As a former mortician who left the field, this was one of my biggest reasons. I completely stand behind green burial, not upselling grieving families, and taking death back home. Many funeral homes are owned by large corporations now. Death has become so industrialized, and impersonal. I’ve told everyone that I care about to refuse embalming. It’s a violent process, and is very unnecessary. It was understand for President Lincoln when he was on the train from DC to Springfield IL. But for normal person, it’s not. Proper cooling, a bit of makeup if needed, is all that’s really needed for a viewing. I’ve told my family to put me in the casket and close the lid please. ❤

Thank you @macgivermacbook. Truth at last! I'm very uncomfortable with autopsy, I do understand the need at times, but crikey it's a cruel thing. My beautiful brilliant son. I could see the line under his forehead of the skull cut. He had blood in the corner of his mouth..(why? was not an accident) went to put my hand on his chest and it sunk down. The horror, the cruelty never leaves.

11:16 President Abraham Lincolns coffin was some what similar to this, It was covered in black velvet, the studding and other furniture was of silver, and it was lined with lead. The lead lining actually helped to thwart an attempted grave robbery by a gang of counterfeiters who had planned to hold Lincoln's body for ransom in exchange for one of their engravers, however the would be grave robbers(two of whom were government informants) were idiots and did not plan for how to remove the coffin which weighed nearly a quarter-ton from the cemetery grounds.
