I couldn't blame Billy, I really couldn't, he didn't even mean to jump into William Kaplan's body (and I saw body because Im pretty sure that boy died instantly upon impact). He didn't fully understand the full extent of his powers until the end. I think what really hit me was the line: "Am I killing this boy so my brother can live?" He has an understanding about the impact of his powers near the end, he doesn't want to hurt anyone, even while trying to achieve his goals. He wants community, family, true acceptance and love.

As a straight guy, I give Billy a pass because of the fact he was not aware of his control over the road or any situation the coven encountered. He wasn't directly responsible for anything that happened. Add to that the fact Agatha was already planning on killing the other witches to begin with, and it at least takes away the blame for the deaths of Alice and Lilia. Though when you take into account Lilia's experience of life, you then raise the question of whether Billy could have avoided creating the road. Which is fun. I like it when stories present narratives that necessitate the lack of free will, or at least imply the lack of free will. With Wanda, though, there are VARIOUS instances in which she is FULLY aware of her involvement in, creation of, and control of the Hex and anything inside it. There's usually at least one moment every episode that indicates as much. Which makes it much harder to forgive her, even if she wasn't intending to harm anyone. Because at every chance she got, she refused to stop. She chose to let other people suffer so long as she was happy and content. Her son did no such thing, and actively tried to PREVENT the suffering of others, without realizing he was the one putting them in danger.

And also Billy was a child and he’s only just begun using and understanding his magical abilities, its much more understandable that his magic would manifest in a powerful unknown way. Wanda has been a witch for many years and has a much deeper understanding of her powers and magic in general. That and unlike Billy her mind on some level knows that what’s happening isn’t real but she’s denying it.

Also, outside of the three witch of the coven who died (and the Salem seven, who kind of needed to die.) the road actually didn't kill people without giving them a chance to survive. Example: when Billy throws all three of the remaining witches off the road after Alison died. The only person who was on the road involuntarily was Lady Death and she didn't seem to mind. Of the three who died one was killed by Agatha, not the road or Billy at all, one died killing the Salem seven, and Sharon is the only one whose death wasn't due to something besides the road. Of note Sharon was only on the road because Agatha didn't want to invite Lady Death.

While I completely agree with your argument as to why Billy's story registers so closely with we queer viewers, I completely disagree with the statement that his actions and Wanda's actions are ethically equivalent because they objectively are not. Both the circumstances surrounding the situation and Billy's informed actions are so drastically different it blows mind that the writers seem to think we're supposed to ACTUALLY think they're the same. First there's intentionality. Unlike Wanda, Billy was never given an opportunity to consciously adjust his manifestation. She had multiple chances to acknowledge the harm she was doing to others and take actions to fix it, but she chose not to. Billy was never presented with a similar opportunity until it was too late... i.e. after the journey was fully completed. Mainly because... Agatha was actively manipulating him the entire time. Yes Agatha tested her ability to toy with Wanda here and there. But she's consciously pushed and prodded Billy to subconsciously adjust the road to her whims every step along the way. He was never actively putting anyone in danger. So his level of responsibility to the coven is nowhere near as high as Wanda's was to the civilians of Westview. Especially considering... The entire coven assumed that their lives were at risk BEFORE choosing to walk the road. Regardless of how the road came to be all three witches knew that going their could kill them, and they decided to take that risk. Magic is mysterious and dangerous and they knew that going in. They knew it better than Billy did. So he's not responsible for putting their lives at risk. They are. Sharon is the only person who was tricked into going and that's on Agatha. She's the one that dragged Sharon along knowing full well she shouldn't be there. I totally understand why Billy thinks he responsible. He's an emotional teenager that's had a really fucked up three years of existence. Yes, only three years, because the show makes it very clear that he doesn't remember William or Billy's life before the car crash. Even after the sigil is broken it seems like he still doesn't remember. So he's only had three years to cobble together any sense of identity while also wrestling with his uncontrolled telepathy. And that's without knowing the metaphysical mechanics of the soul and the self. Though Moon Knight's experience in the Duat suggests that the soul/self can be fragmented and reconfigured in ways unknown a person. And then on top of all that, Agatha has purposefully been manipulating him to feel guilty. To make him believe he's as evil and flawed as she is... which again, he definitely is not. As a sidenote, if you pay attention Billy didn't actually grant anyone (except Agatha) their desires. They all achieved them through walking the road, but not specifically because of the road. Alice was able to break the curse through the coven coming together and using the magic in her mother's song. Lilia was able to find solace in her prescience through an increased connection to nature, forming a new coven, and better mastering her craft (the three things her Grandmother asked her about). Jennifer got her magic back by unbinding herself from Agatha's spell. Billy gave Tommy a body because Agatha taught him how to do it. And even Agatha only got her powers back by draining some of Billy's. All of these things could have been done regardless of whether they walked the Road or not. The Road was just the spiritual journey they happened to go on in this particular instance. I'm not a Wanda apologist. She is absolutely a villain in WandaVision, and she was done wrong in Multiverse of Madness because her further descent happened off camera. If it ain't on the screen it don't mean a thing. But Billy is in no way as bad as Wanda was.

Wanda was not aware of what she was doing until several episodes in. Remember in Ep2 when she tried to explain to Vision all the weirdness that was happening? That shows that at least up until then, she was completely lost in the fantasy. More complex, though, is even after she did know, she found it so much easier to forget again and just embrace the fantasy. At this point it becomes more an analogy for drug addiction, or at least that a real-world analogy. I should also point out this kind of dissociation actually happens in real life, they just don't have the power to effect everyone around them quite as directly.

In the last episode Agatha shows her the truth and she's horrified and devastated. I'm pretty sure Wanda wasn't fully aware of what she was doing, otherwise she wouldn't have reacted that way.
@phoenixrage18 күн бұрын
@mellemadswoestenburg1296 I think she knew subconsciously, but she was in very deep denial to escape having to confront her grief and trauma, so she was lying to herself until Agatha forced her to face the truth. Remember, when the citizens confront her, she still tries to deny it. "I've kept you safe in here! You feel...at peace!"
@mellemadswoestenburg12968 күн бұрын
@phoenixrage1 oh she was definitely in denial. Though i interpreted that line more as her reaffirming what she believed the entire time. When she arrived in Westview the people were pretty unhappy all around which is probably part of the reason why Wanda never saw a reason to doubt the hex. It didn't just benefit her but the town as well. So when she's shown that that's not the case she's deeply disturbed and regretful because helping them is what she wanted. That's a very consistent character trait of hers. She doesn't want to hurt anyone but she's also a character of extremes. Her coping mechanism is too powerful. But then again that's just how i saw it. There are so many videos on KZbin that are demonizing her with 0 nuance and that always makes me mad. Yes the entire Westview incident is Wanda's fault and she deserves to be criticized for it. But at the end of the day she's not evil. She never wanted to hurt anybody and her reaction in this scene makes it very wild to me that people call her a villain or a "psychopathic narcissist". Not you of course, just examples i keep seeing.

I haven’t seen AAA and so have no thoughts to offer, so for my homework/sacrifice for the algorithm I’ll say: I don’t have a movie/show, but a *game* character I see myself (almost uncomfortably) strongly in is Siffrin, the player character from In Stars and Time. In particular, the subplot of them being deeply touch starved, but everyone mistaking that for them being touch-averse and thus making a point not to touch them, hit me like a ton of bricks; that’s the only time in media I’ve seen that experience of mine reflected. And their entire story - from being an enby who’s stressed depressed and under duress, to dealing with having the roots of their identity and culture cut off from them without their consent, to the lengths they’ll go to try and stay connected to the people they love - just hit so close to home that at times it honestly felt like I was playing a self-insert character hahaha.! I’ve literally never felt more seen in any media than that, in ways both comforting and uncomfortable (but like in a good way).

I do like how Billy actually realizes his part in it and the gravity of what he (subconsciously) did. It is actually a pretty great treatise on generational trauma. Agatha fights to NOT deal with her own acts, and keeps repeating them. Wanda kind of realized what she had done, but didn't really do much about (and oassed it along). Billy has some work to do for sure, but he did acknowledge a deep horror in his own actions and memorialized the losses he was reaponsible for. As with Billy, most who are subjected to the effects of generational trauma do not realize how they are part of the challenge and passing on the hurt and pain. Brilliant writing The question is what happens by continuing with Agatha.

One character and show that had me relating hard was Martin Blackwood from The Magnus Archives, a fictional horror podcast distributed by Rusty Quill. Specifically episode 184 "Quiet", it was basically a "face your fear" type trope with Martin talking to/confronting himself, but it didn't end in him defeating it and triumphing being victorious, there was no ending really, only acknowledging trauma and coming to terms that bad things happened to him and because of him. Then being pulled out by the love of his life.

I have a love/hate relationship with this show, it's probably one of the best MCU series made, along with Loki season 1 and Wandavision, and episode 7 is peak television in general BUT that makes the flaws even more glaring. I'm actually writing a fix it story/rewrite of the show and it's shockingly easy how little changes could have made this show a better story. -Episode 5: have Billy lose control of his powers after throwing Agatha off the road, he gets an headache and ACCIDENTLY push Lilia and Jen off the road too, and show him be distraught by it. -Episode 8: Show Rio as Death about to collect Alice soul from her body but then BAM! close-up of her Protection Tattoo from her mother burning up (Foreshadowing from when she mentioned it) and reviving her, (one time use only) leaving a burn scar but she's alive! and Rio gives her a warning that she's on thin ice from now on with Death, and Alice run to catch up with the others, because she's a protection Witch and she want to protect her Coven dammit! ----Optional addendum A: Lilia's sacrifice is thematically important and very well written so this is just pure wish fulfilment of having more Patty Lupone but maybe, while Alice is running to reach the others, she come across the castle and see Lilia about to fall on the swords from the Window and jump through the window to save her, right after the show went to black in episode 7, and catch Lilia before she reach the swords, and togheter they went to the next trial. but again, Lilia's death is actually meaningful and not meaningless like with ALice, so i would be fine with it to stay the same. -Episode 8: Alice (and optionally Lilia) reach the beginning of the Road, see that Billy, Jen and Agatha's Shoes are missing and realize that she needs to put on her shows to carry on to the next trial, so she does and join them in their Green Magic trial, cue Tear and joyful reunion (and Agatha is maybe bitchslapped for the attemped but actually succesful murder by Alice) Episode 8: Now the Whole Coven (Coven of Chaos Frick YEAH!) Help Billy and Agatha do the trial, things go mostly the same as canon, Jen gets her power back and escape the Road. Billy, Agatha and Alice (and maybe Lilia, see addendum A) help Billy bring Tommy Back, everyone but Agatha Escape the Road and she's pass the Trial like in canon Now Agatha is about to face Death Rio like in the show but then POW! here the whole Coven come in Agatha aid at Billy's Behest (and maybe Lilia suggestion from future vision) Jen and Billy are helping Agatha with their Blue and Pink Magic, Alice is burning Protection Circles and Shields of Fires any time Rio attack someone, Lilia is giving preditctions and warnings of like only a seer can do, predicting Death every step and telling the others how to avoid it. Alas, Death can only be slowed, not defeated, so they are on the backfoot and about to be defeated and killed by Rio, Agatha tricks Billy into believing that by giving himself up the others will be spared, and so Billy does to save the others, Agatha act like in the show, and change her mind last second after Billy mention Nicholas and Kiss Rio and subsequently dies. (comehappence for the things she did) Rio is mournful and let the others go. The Coven, exhausted and shaken, leaves Agatha House and Jen (or Lilia) ask Billy what he plan to do now, will he stay in the coven or will he go back to his life and family? is he Billy Maximoff or WIlliam Kaplan? he answers that he finally knows who he is, that he is the Magician Billy Kaplan, both and neither, only himself. He bring his Coven to meet his family and his boyfriend is there, worried sick for him, and finally has a talk with his parents of what is happening in his life, telling them the truth, his coven let him have a moment with them and they plan to meet the day after at Agatha House to decide their next step. He goes to his room and realize that everything there matches what he has seen on there roadt. has a freakout and there Ghost Agatha appears, Fade to Black. Episode 9: Agatha Backstory is different in that Rio doesn't disappear after but the birth of Nicholas but occasionally appears through out their journey to spend time with them and we can see some sort of weird Domesticity with Agatha and Rio parenting Nicholas, but Death is quite literally shadowing Nick, so Agatha still has to kill witches to increase his lifespan. Until that fateful day in which Nick refuse to help in killing witches and Rio has to do her duty. Agatha is broken like in the show but then we see, from the darkness of the wood, a shadow emerges and we get Canon Mefisto offering a deal to Agatha in her moment of desperation and Weakness. He offers her the Darkhold in exchange for the souls of witches and servitude. I'm still writing the ending but basically the barebones is that the Witches Road exist and Mephisto tell agatha about it. Rio wanted to keep it a secret from Agatha because it was too dangerous and didn't want Agatha to risk her life, also because she might wish for Nick back and that would upset the sacred balance. Agatha lures witches into opening the road, each time the Door appear but instead of opening it, and facing Nick again, which she is too ashamed to do, she kills the others witches like in the show. In the present she tells Billy all of that and also tell him that he didn't created the Road but that the Road DID appear for him this time. because his desire to bring tommy back mixed with his great powers was too big of a beacon. Now Billy, along with his Coven of Chaos and with Ghost Agatha as their Guide, have taken Agatha House as their Headquartes/ Lair and are about to embark on their quest to find Tommy and deal with Mephisto, who has a debt to settle. I'm still working on it and there are a few things i have to change/write but this is the framework.
@daddybendover698 күн бұрын
Just to address the episode 5 critique, I think he was just angry at them for excusing Agatha's behavior. Jen says they're all there for power, Lillia says death comes for them all essentially cosigning her actions and then walking on. Billy bonded with Alice the most so he was lashing out at all of them but he couldn't use magic on Agatha or she'd take it.

If Billy learned hes doing this, he created the Road....i very strongly doubt he would keep on that path knowing ppl are dying.

I was coming here to say this! Up to the 2nd to last episode, Billy legitimately doesn't know if he's Billy Maximoff or William Kaplan (and we're not sure if at the end of the series he's sure, he just wants his brother back), hence how the Tower trap halts when he asks Lillia "Am I William or am I Billy?". I think the one point I would add to your rundown of themes (although it ties into self hate) is the subtle nod to suicidal ideation via the broken window in ep 3 and then Billy being thrown through the glass in ep 4. They both pay off when you see that Billy Kaplan actually died via "broken glass" in ep 6. Also, sorry, another is the running theme of Billy's telepathy: we see it most clearly with his Kaplan parents and the way he shapes himself to be their ideal son, but it's also all over the road. He can clearly read every witch in the coven except for Agatha and thus feeds them not only their actual worst fears in ep 3 but also makes sure each of them get their desires before they die. Even if that desire is "bury me in this kitchen"....

One problem I have with Billy being the one who created the "Witch's Road": "Kitty Forman" died because of it!! 😡😅 Yes, like everyone else I forget her character's name, so I'm using the name of the role she was in in "That's 70s Show", as it still seems that is who she is playing. 😅 I still can't see a 'good' reason for her death, knowing what we now know. Billy made the road, using the 'Rules' that Agatha had made up. Part of those rules were that only Witches could walk it, and that each would be given a personal test, which could kill them in the end if they failed. "Kitty" was not a witch, and I can't see what resulted in her death being any kind of 'personal test' on her part. All the other witches knew what they were facing, and were willing to die to accomplish their goal. "Kitty" thought she was joining some strange "Town Woman's Club", and had no idea it could be lethal. In addition, if it were all because of the Subconscious mind of Billy, then why would he allow the death of an 'Innocent' person like this? (I'm assuming, like his mother, he is Good At Heart, particularly since he isn't being influenced by the Chaos/Evil Magic of the Darkhold) This suggest the dark possibility that Billy is truly willing to at least allow the death of someone if it works towards his goals (and maybe consciously cause such?). This would be an interesting development for a character, but I don't think its what they intended (giving him such a secret 'Dark Side'). I fully expected Kitty to somehow claw her way out of the dirt in a Post Credits scene or something, but it seems she's truly dead 😔

Billy createt the Road, but not consciously. There where no safetys, no airbags on his Magic. He createt the road the way he believed it would be: Lethaly Dangerous, especially to someone who isnt even a Witch. That doesnt mean he wantet her to die, but lets be frank, when dropped into a magical dimension thats supposed to test and endanger Witches, you would realistically expect an kinda Dizzy, airheaded older Woman without any powers or training to not last long. And so she didnt. Her death also followed the Roads (and therefore billys) internal logic: She drank Poison, a lot of it, and died from it. Its not like he dropped a bunch of Rocks on her.

@@centimanj8916 I guess I just fall on the side of "If you would not kill anybody, not even your subconscious self would allow it". In the comics, at least, its the main reason why The Hulk is never said to have killed anyone in his rampages, because Banner would not, no matter how angry he got. I'm certain that may have changed about the Hulk in later interpretations, but that's the one I'm familiar with.

@@MrChupacabra555the thing is though Billy warps reality. The road was REAL, he created it subconsciously with his magic but after he made it, it operates outside of his will. With his mom it’s more an extension of her mind warping powers but Billy can actually create worlds. So he wouldn’t necessarily be able to subconsciously stop a death.

@@kristinanance7100 Well, even Agatha acknowledges that he could kill someone. After they find 'Kitty's' body, she looks up and says "I didn't know you had it in you" (something I totally missed, but another reviewer pointed it out), as she knew (All Along 😅) that it was Billy who made the Road, and was surprised that he would 'allow' the road to kill anyone.

@@MrChupacabra555 Who's Sharon? Apparently, Kitty is. There is so much about her death and yet hers is the only one that is really on Billy at all.

I watched Agatha All Along with my girlfriend and we blasted through it so fast that we immediately started a rewatch after we finished it the first time lol. I had to laugh when one of my cishet friends watched it and said she was surprised that Agatha and Rio were revealed to be exes because she got the impression from their first meeting that they were estranged mother and daughter or sisters, whereas my partner and I called the ex-gf tension IMMEDIATELY when watching that scene. 😂 Literally after two lines of dialogue I was just like, “oh, they totally used to fuck”.

Wait. Who adopted Senor Scratchy? And did Ralph get some help?
@markmatson9 күн бұрын
The original plan was to have a scene in WandaVision where Señor Scratchy reveals himself to be a demon familiar. I hoped this would come up in Agatha All Along, but still consider this slightly canon. He probably had to survive on his own for three years anyway, sure he's fine.

I’ve got a question; Why was the word “disgrace” in your thumbnail? Maybe I missed something but it doesn’t seem to relate to your video essay.

FYI there’s a quiet high pitched tone in your video intermittently. Might wanna check that before posting, it’s unlistenable in my headphones!

Stories and characters are allowed to be tragic. It's such an irritatingly American approach to culture to want every protagonist to be a hero with no flaws and if they aren't then to declare them to be 'problematic'. They're not real. They are characters through which we as readers/viewers can experience a story and a life we will never live ourselves. That's why we tell stories. Wanda is deeply flawed in her response to what happens to her - that's an interesting story. Stop wanting her to be an indisputably Good Person - that would be a much less interesting story. Nobody is arguing that Macbeth would be a better story if he hadn't murdered the king and was actually a good guy all along. Some stories work great with protagonists that are pure of heart and deed. These stories are different.
@darrekworkman55957 күн бұрын
The problem is when the story doesn't acknowledge bad characters as being bad. Wandavision excused everything Wanda did. I am personally glad that Billy wasn't perfect, but he wasn't excused for that fact either. Neither was Agatha. That makes AAA better than Wandavision in my book.
@ErrantFragments7 күн бұрын
@@darrekworkman5595 I'd argue that Wandavision doesn't do that - she ends the show just leaving, arguably in shame, rather than being celebrated for her actions. Wanda's grief and grievance causes her to do something awful, to herself and others, that's a relatable situation for a lot of adults. I don't think the framing of the show condones those actions as we regularly seen the terrible effects on the other characters, but they are, to an extent, understandable given the extreme experiences she has gone through. The story doesn't need to put out a big signpost saying "THIS IS BAD. THIS IS A BAD PERSON" because dealing with that nuance is the point of this particular story. But more fundamentally, why should a story need to have this kind of moral clarity, where there are only simplistic 'good' and 'bad' characters? Children's stories have that level of clarity, and a lot of comic book stories do too because they are still mostly for kids. But this particular show is intentionally more morally complex and dealing with a more adult range of emotions and themes.
