Jeez... I'm old enough to remember when the mouse was new and a godsend. Now I live in the era when we are trying to eliminate it. I have to admit to flirting with this quest also, I get close just like everyone here. learn keyboard shortcuts, mouse-keys and navigation keys on our fancy-swanky high customizable overpriced mechanical keyboards, tiling managers, vimium plugin, maybe even delving into 'warpd'. But these GUI OS's seem its simply impossible for the total elimination of the mouse. In a lot of cases the mouse is simply quicker and 'natural' option, and the keyboard option is an exercise in deliberate tedium because of our stubborn zealotry. Sometimes, you just gotta reach out and grab that rat and use it.

I use Vimium differently, and I am heavy tabs user. Always use Shift+f to open links. And you are right, KZbin is the most unfriendly for Vimium web-site. Also, I don't want to eliminate mouse completely, but reduce it to the minimum.

The comment input box is just about the only thing vimium doesn't detect and it's the most infuriating thing

About the quest to get rid of the mouse, I reached the same point as you have, I can do it 100% of the time because I programmed a mouse input layer on my keyboard, but the force of habit and the way the web is designed make it less than convenient.

Thanks. I"m trying out vim-vixen now. It's, different. Aesthetically it feels more like qutebrowser's interface.

Tiling window managers don't really help my workflow. I've just switched 100% to a Debian Openbox set-up using Crunchbang++ as the base so I'm really just spending time at the mo getting to grip with keybindings for opening and moving windows and using Double Commander and Midnight Commander as file managers. I'm aiming I guess for about 75-25 keyboard-mouse use. That'll suit me fine.

Great topic! I feel your pain. I have tried to switch to keyboard only input but as you say there are some annoying websites that dont work well with vimium eg drop down menus. Two things I did to improve things - increase the font size of the vimium links (vimium settings) and use the tab key to get to the link you want eg use vimium to get to a link close to the desired link and then press tab to get to the link. Thanks for the keynav suggestion.

With qutebrowser or tridactyl you can actually specify different sets of css selectors in order to reduce the amount of hints appearing. If you take a little time, you'll be able to clear up the noise quite effectively. Tridactyl even allows you to then store these commands per-domain (you have to use firefox tho). And then, for situations where you still need the mouse - try keynav! It's in nearly all the repos and is quite configurable. Using a combination of these, you'll be able to reduce compulsory mouse usage a lot more. I know I did :)

Great topic and thoughts! Can relate, I get tired of chasing the cursor around and mouse clicking on web page links, alert notification prompts, accept cookies, etc. Vimium is great, also tried Link Hints. For voice control there is Talon Voice. They have a mouse grid option. It works similar to KeyNav but with voice commands. Also, Talon Voice plus Vimium can select links in browser, just say "fine" for f key then letters. Lastly, mouse keys to help fine tune. I haven't figured this out just exploring! Thanks & be well.

I find vim-vixen plays better with a lot of websites than vimium. And for your arrow keys addiction you can go for a 65% or even for a 40% with arrow keys - I'm typing this on a plank ;) great video.
@TheLinuxCast3 жыл бұрын
I just got this keyboard or I'd look for something smaller with arrow keys. I'm not opposed to having them on a different layer, but I did miss them when I used the poker3 or whatever it's called. I"ll have to check out vim-vixen.
@maeglingondolinsbane34463 жыл бұрын
@@TheLinuxCast On the drop plank 40% the arrow keys are on the main layer so it's great. Have fun with vim-vixen ;)

Hey @The Linux Cast, when vimium shows two overlapping shortcut icons after pressing f, that usually means it's detected the same link twice, i.e. the page is writing it to two different tags but in the same visual area. I've never had an issue with just picking the one that shows up on top.

But why do you want to do that? You can't do everything with the keyboard. Mouse is like GUI and keyboard is like CLI, it can't do everything that GUI can but it does a lot of things much better than GUI.

Finally someone explained the no mouse struggle. Much love man keep up the great videos! P.S I haven't had much more luck trying to get rid of the mouse. It's tough to get rid of the habits of using a mouse too. Even in using tiling window managers I catch myself clicking on a tag / workspace. I have to catch myself and be like why, just why? 😄

I do the same with the workspaces. It's worse, I do it while recording. LOL

i fix this by buying a ergodox keyboard and make a custom keymap without arrow keys and then added mouse on a layer so it is hard to use the mouse and then i disconnect my mouse and did a really hard week with only this keyboard and a printed cheatsheet on the desk and after that week of *Pain*, i can use anything without a real mouse. and now they got a new keyboard "moonlander" that is smaller and can fit any where, i did not buy that one yet, but i hear it is better then the first one. so remove all the thing in one go and you will never have this pain again.

It doesn't have to be all or nothing. Nuthin wrong with spicin it up now and then with some mouse clicks. Also, those people posting snapshots on /r/unixporn don't actually use tilers. They're fakes.
