This story is extremely important and needs to get a lot more exposure. Two important things were left out, however. Something very similar is happening in East Africa. It's called the East Africa Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), and climate activists in Europe & Africa have been fighting an uphill battle to stop it. But these projects are actually quite popular with the local populations because many of these people strongly believe that finally it is their turn to benefit financially from their own natural resources. I believe the only just and effective way to defeat these projects is for the developed world to provide generous financial incentives to any countries where fossil fuel deposits have been found - incentives for them NOT to exploit them. And these incentives must be equal in value to the potential financial benefits of drilling and mining. And these funds must be equitably distributed among the population and invested in education, healthcare, renewable energy, etc. We also need to provide incentives for them to become active stewards of their natural resources. We also need to provide generous compensation to Brazil, to the tune of billions of dollars, as an incentive to start protecting (and restoring) the Amazon rainforest. This is not charity. It's about human survival and basic equity.

Thanks Amy for inviting Malinda and Antonio to your show. These two smart courageous women have exposed how the World bank and Exon have been preparing and financing the drilling of the largest under water oil deposits ever to be discovered. Malinda has administered a legal suit against Exon and the World Bank on the grounds drilling violates the natural rights of Guyana's environment which makes it essential that she win her legal claim against them On the other hand because this oil deposit in Guyana marks one of richest oil deposits ever discovered means its essential that Exon and the World Bank win their legal right to drill, regardless of the environmental damage it causes the natural rights of Guyana. Its clear as we watched the destruction to the gulf coast a decade ago caused by an explosion in the deep sea horizon, and the horrific destruction to Ecuador's rain forest thirty years ago caused by Chevron's cost cutting drilling violations that Guyana could be next in line to suffer irreparable environmental destruction should Exon be given approval to drill. Moreover this bonanza of new oil will only fuel the global climate crisis. Its apparent that Exon and the World Bank, consumed by geed, are obsessed with maximizing profits at the expense of the rest of the world.

(5:35) "What is 'natural capital?' Traditionally, economists treat the natural world as if it has no value. So, for example, a standing forest is considered to be worthless, but if you cut it down and convert it into logs, then economists will tell you that now you have something that has value. "Natural capital says the opposite. It says that the forest has value in itself. And of course this makes sense because we can't live without the natural world. [As per Guyana's constitution,] preserving clean air, fertile soils, pure water, and the rich diversity of plants and animals and ecosystems - that's what the well-being of the nation depends on. That is critical because, at the end of the day, we're not going to eat oil; we're not going to drink oil. Our survival as people (and as a species) depends on the natural world. [...] "We must push back against this crazy mentality that the natural world has no value until you convert it to numbers on a spreadsheet."

Dear Guyana, First off. I believe in you, and your power. I think the country will change when we decide we've had enough. Second, we must work together, and not belittle each other. Third, we must pick a focus, and get the Guyanese government to commit. For example; if affordable housing is important we must work together to strengthen that sector. I believe all Guyanese people must get a check of $5,000 USD per month. Therefore, I'm choosing to make this my focus. However, I also believe education is the key. This is my long-term objective, and will take about 10 years to straighten out. We must know what we want, go after it, and understand it will take time. I also believe we must have committees who will sit with the ministers of Education, sports, housing, and other departments. These committees will focus on attacking certain issues, and must return to their village to talk about their progress. The village must compensate them, because we know it takes money to move around. A lot of adults and children in Guyana cannot read, write, spell, or do math. I strongly believe we need to invest more into families, communities, education, and reducing poverty. Guyana need a massive literacy program. Lets encourage the Minister of Education to push all Guyanese to the top. I'm also asking all political parties to focus, and stop the playing. Guyana is a small country, and we shouldn't be having these problems. We should want to sit, negotiate, and have open dialogue about these issues. Instead both political parties have allow the education system to fall. Now concerning our oil. Many nations are giving their people free money, education, and lower taxes. From Libya, Qatar, Dubai, and even certain places in America. I hope no Guyanese person fight me down on the idea of our people receiving a check from their oil money. I would like to personally hire experts from those countries to help us lead the way, and build a strong Nation. Now in the next election we must vote out all unproductive parasites. We do not want people who refuse to work to help with running our nation. Ending speech Let's become one Guyana, and push our country forward. We know politics is a dirty game, but we have the power to change our country for the better. Let's not wait, because tomorrow is not promised. However, let's focus on education, creating businesses, creating jobs, infrastructure, developing talent, and strengthening our industries. This cannot happen if we work against our own self-interest. This means we must educate ourselves, our children, our families, and our communities. We must be able to have certain conversations at the dinner table. We know education is key, and the tool needed to build Nations, because without education "we will not know the value of our resources, we will make bad decisions, and we will close bad deals". For aeons, the climate has been changing: every year, every decade, every century. It is obvious that this will manifest 'regionally'. The claim of 'global warming' (now they are using the term 'climate change' - and just what the hell that is?) cannot be proven and CO2 as a greenhouse gas cannot be proven as well which makes the claim that 'we' , the ones causing 'global warming' via carbon emissions, pretty much null and void. Climate change is the last thing you should worry about. Much better to focus your attention on the financial evisceration of America and support leaders who want an end to that. I agree the oil industry is extremely polluting but since I don't live in Guyana, I can't say anything more. The camp seems very divided from all the comments I am reading.

This present regime should not be held accountable for missing the timeframe for the stabilization of GHG concentrations in the atmosphere. In 1988 the IPCC was jointly established by the WMO and the UNEP to assess available scientific information on climate change ,etc. This served as the basis for negotiating the UNFCCC. Guyana was not represented on the listing for the IPCC First and Second Assessment report which was completed between 1990 and 1992. Desmond Hoyte's PNCR government visionless about environmental preservation stressed emphasis on so called economic recovery programmes and ignored the IPCC. We can't begin to understand Climate Change from the middle with Supplementary reports. Ultimate Objectives of the UNFCCC along with Scientific Technical Analyses should be thoroughly studied.

The solution is to reap the oil a small amount at a time, to develop Guyana.

Jagdeo and his Government should take all the US billions of dollars and fix this ticking time bomb issue that the oil drilling is causing Guyana.. they all will have to pay compensate the Guyanese people.

The climate nuts have been saying the coastline will be underwater for years 😂 The world actually needs a lot more oil production. Energy is the foundation of civilization!
@shawnchurch3162 жыл бұрын
The world will run out petroleum based fuels for at least the next two centuries and these climate nuts need to realize that. At any one time there is on average 10,000 commercial airliners in the sky and that number is only growing due to globalization. There is no replacement for aviation kerosene and probably never will be. I won't ever own or drive a electric vehicle.
@BigMike109602 жыл бұрын
@@shawnchurch316 I think nuclear, is the future emission free energy. I think small modular reactors can be used for air travel. Of course copper shortages could impact electricity distribution this decade.
@shawnchurch3162 жыл бұрын
@@BigMike10960 Nuclear is the only viable carbon free source of electricity that can reliably meet baseline energy demands. Finding better ways to reprocess the spent fuel assemblies is greatly needed. There is no reason not to build nuclear powered container ships, it would actually create high paying jobs for the highly skilled people needed to operate them. Battery technology would need multiple giant leaps forward for electric airliners to have any chance of viability.

Polynesians coast lines are being used for these studies for years & have been scientifically measured to be sinking. They know how much & how fast also measuring rate at which Polar Ice caps melting into the sea in Alaska raises sea levels. Oxygen its self is really the foundation of civilization. That’s the stuff we are running out of because of the Oil Industry. Jan When fossil fuels are burned, they release nitrogen oxides into the atmosphere, which contribute to the formation of smog and acid rain Major sources of nitrogen oxide emissions include: Cars and trucks Coal-fired power plants Large industrial operations Ships and airplanes

Crumbs. I'm Guyanese and I grew up without Western presence - the best upbringing I could ever ask for. Africa and the Caribbean would like you to purchase our resources at market level. That of course, would destabilize the West which is why you put corrupt people in office and take them out when they refuse to comply with the West. Haiti is a good example.

Well, we all do, drive to work, brush your teeth, cook? All of this consumes fresh water and energy. Almost any action we preform, even chatting in this here youtube app, slowly kills the planet. We are a group of parasites with an unsustainable future and no will to stop.

Thanks for the information because climate change is a real big issue we all need to stand for Mother Earth🌏 we as a nation need to do so. The rainforest is very important too the environment. If we do not speak out we all will not have a future so do the right thing and stop🚫 the drilling of oil☠️

GUYANA IS SINKING FURTHER, and ExxonMobil knows this!! Its mass was already 8 feet below sea level before the drilling started, and Climate Central projects that by 2050, 90% of its habitable coastline in central areas will be flooded. That under water land-shelf where the US, UK, China and Canada have conveniently built an oil border between Guyana and Venezuela, isn't helping. The Government of Guyana needs to cap those production contracts, and vigorously work with its neighbors to maintain a GUYANESE presence in South America, since fate is determining that it has a bleak future. CONGRATULATIONS to Melinda Janki, an untiring fighter for human rights, and to Democracy Now for this video.

Guyana don't have a beach tourism industry so as spill won't affect Guyana financially, only there beach wild life.
@ususa80522 жыл бұрын
@@patricksantos1702 Wild life is important Patrick! Also, it's not just a matter of a 'beach tourism'; large populations live along those coastal borders. They will lose their livelihood, AND the flooding is expected to affect the major (and only developed) business center, Georgetown. THIS CANNOT BE DISMISSED. Do you know how much damage water does to infrastructure? If you've lived in Guyana, whenever it rains,, it fills like a cup. Patrick, here's my question to you. Since it's predicted that the coast land will sink by 2050 and the city is already flooding, where do you think Guyanese can expect to live in the future? An oil spill will kill all the fish life.
