To get the 1/2 out of the derivative, he needs to divide its reciprocal to both top and bottom.

You simply cannot start with Calculus if you don't have a good grasp of algebra. It would be very weird for him to explain algebra at this point. Try to find some other videos explaining algebra and then come back to this.
