This car has the only three options available that year on this model. MB USA official pricing is as follows: 1998 SL600, $125,000; panorama top, $3600; multicontour seats (pair), $780; SL Sport Package, $4970. Gas guzzler tax, $2100; Destination charge, $595.00. Total cost this car is $137,045 plus tax, back in 1998. I have a 1998 SL600 in red. A fantastic machine!

@@danger450 I knew these cars were expensive back then. But I did not realize they were equivalent to $215,000 in today's money. That is astronomical. That's more expensive than the most recent Sl63 AMG. Almost as much as the SL65. I wonder what an AMG version would have cost if it were sold by the dealership like they are today.

I owned the 500 SL, no repair issues only regular oil changes, gas and Michelin tires. It was the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. It is affordable to own based on my own experience.

ThX Bill , for another neat review ! Did never know the V12 was larger on the Frontside. Such a Beautiful Hardtop , makes the car looks so fine ! A Friend of mine had a SL 300 , for me all SL R129 look exquisite. And his SL300 was really a Dream Car. I remember he crashed the Car in front of him, because he was checking Girls on the Side walk.... But like U mentioned , back in the Days, Cars were made to last, and this SL600 is a perfect example of over engineering. Still , I would not soon buy a V12. Too much risk , and maintenance costs, compared to a reliable V8. Greetings !

[all downhill afterwards] BTW, the Leather, wood, and trim on the V12 models is higher quality than the lesser siblings, parts cost is 200-300% more. "...when Dusenbergs roamed the Earth..." Driving my 94 Sl 500 wasn't sporty at all! Was braking thru Malibu canyon and Big Sur like an old man! It came out of a dealership from Beverly Hills during the OJ mess and by the time it got to me the trunk would flood and inside the cabin! The engine was really smooth 👌

These were really lovely back in the day and a hot commodity because of how fresh it looked compared to the previous one which had been out for so long. Kind of a shame we never got an intermediate model that was more in line with Mercedes' 1980's design, because this is more like the w140 and the previous convertible was more like the S-class of the '70's.

The black box under the back seat is the ECU not a sub woofer. Great car! Still affordable too!

Actually that is an amp and a subwoofer you are referring to. The ECU's (there are two) are under the hood in an enclosed unit, just in front of the windshield on the passenger side. The ECU chips can be replaced with new ones better programmed for performance. But regardless of chips etc, a lack of intake air ultimately hampers performance of the M120 engine in the R129 SL600.

@@MDavidG1 Thanks for the clarification. I have to say that I had to have the ECU replaced on my 1999 320 SL when the roof broke and it is under the rear seat on the drivers side - that's on the right in the UK. Lovely car!

I have a 1980 450SL and I cherish the car. Only had 38,000 miles. I drove it off the lot and it’s been a real joy to own. 12 mpg ever since I bought it but it will go. If you know the proper Mercedes mechanic you can easily get 300 hp and keep it almost factory. Maybe that’s why I get 10 to 12 mpg. It can get much worse if you get in it. Bobby Allison was my neighbor for years. Lol 😂
