I love Senna's own quote about that lap. One of the most inspirational things I've ever heard.

Jo's book is great. Read it twice already. A man who came out of nothing and achieved great things in life. Always a humble man. A true inspiration that, to succeed in life, you just have to be yourself, be true to you and others.

Senna was not driving that day, he was flowing across the track! the Senna-Mclaren-Honda magic took years to make perfect!--So much so that when he signed with Williams-Renault V10, he stepped into a car that was his secondguessing enemy and ultimately became his deathtrap!

Great video as ever. Love this content from you guys at McLaren. Just one small point though........ You are a high tech company in the world of formula one. For petes sake, spend a little money on a HD camera and stop upping in 360p lol Also mono sound? seriously? Other than that, as I said, great video. Love hearing Jo Ramirez speaking about Ayrton. They were so close it always feels like a little personal insight about my hero. Thank you

Were Fangio/Moss and Clark/Gurney really rivalries? Moss never beat Fangio over the course of a season and was only close once. Clark found himself fighting Graham Hill far more than Gurney. Prost/Senna, by contrast, not only features two drivers who are among the 9 that have at least three championships, they had to beat two others from that elite group to get there. Factor in driving identical cars and their very different styles and it was an epic rivalry.

Well, saying that Senna without McLaren would have zero WDC is a little (actually far) exagerated to me. It was a possibility, but for that you would have to assume that he should drive for another team, most probably for Williams, and back then Williams had good cars. Staying like that, at least 2 WDC he would easily win (92-93). And let's remember that it was mostly because of Senna that the Honda motors got to McLaren, without that what would McLaren be back then? For sure not as fantastic as they were. Your assumptions trying to undermine Senna's talent are ridiculously pointless.

Ayrton's weakest trait was his angst on Prost. That ultimately put him at a disadvantage.
@MrTann201011 жыл бұрын
Haha you are probably right about that, its the final result that counts, but its not just mindset, its luck as well, and it is wise to remember that Senna always had more mechanical failures than Prost when they were both in McLaren.

I feel it was because he was told to slow down that caused him to crash. Think about it. He’s going that fast and he is focused on his driving, then he gets a radio saying slow down. Sometimes you just need to back off and allow for the driver to focus.

It's also wise to remember that Senna was more likely to crash and Prost's driving philosophy was to push the car as little as possible to win and to take the result the car would give him. How many of Senna's mechanical failures were partially caused by the car being driven too hard?

The idiots who claim that Senna would have never won without McLaren are children who are hopping on the hate bandwagon after having watched only a few highlights of the dick they prefer to ride. He had already won the 1985 season with Lotus, which was far from being the best car that year. So it's safe to say that he would have won with or without McLaren. He was just in a really good place at McLaren. He belonged at McLaren. Not because of the quality and performance advancement of the cars, but because of the attention to detail and the care for cultivating a genuine personal relationship involving every member and element that the team consisted of.

Too many facts, not maths. Prost brought home more results than Senna did - deservedly so. However, Senna's best, at a specific moment, was the ultimate. Like Gilles, that makes him a timeless legend. And oddly, Prost, not so much.

1988 net: Senna 90 Prost 87 / gross: Prost 105 Senna 94. 1989 net: Prost 76 Senna 60 / gross: Prost 81 Senna 60. 1988/89 combined net: Prost 163 Senna 150 / combined gross: Prost 186 Senna 154. McLaren's perfect season was blown at Monza due to Senna's mindset. After two seasons together plus the p.r. disaster that was Suzuka 1990 Senna had not surpassed Prost's ability to win points wars or public sympathy. That point was 11 yrs in F1 for Prost. Senna was losing to MS 11 years in.

To a large extent, Senna is remembered the way he is because of the way his story ended. During his career, it was debatable whether or not Senna was better and in terms of race results as teammates, he didn't beat Prost.

What's the goal? Is it pole position? No, that's a means toward winning the race which is the means toward winning the WDC title. At Monaco 1988 Senna psyched Prost in qualifying but Prost psyched Senna in the race where the points are paid. Quick isn't enough. Net loser: Senna.
@siggijackson28787 жыл бұрын
But you know Senna still won the 88 WDC
