This is really great foreshadowing to one of the greatest speeches of all time. When Rohan's army arrives at the fields of Pelennor, Theoden instantly recognizes that his men will start to waver at the sight of Mordor's army (as evidenced by Eowyn's voice and Eomer dithering with his horse). Theoden then gives brisk and confident orders and encouragement to his lieutenants and his men. But, he also knows that his men are still held back by the thought of whether they will live or die in this battle. He then evokes the thought of certain death and the world's ending in his men with glorious bravado. His men will now give their all in this battle as the fear of death no longer hangs above their heads. And then at last, he reminds them of their glorious ancestors, inspiring them to give their all in this last glorious charge.

Also a very beautiful scene. The beacons, burning from Gondor to Rohan all the way thru the night; and then at dawn reaching Meduseld. The music in that scene is almost wagnerian, and you really get a sense of scale and distance (it takes an entire night for the beacons to reach Rohan).

I have seen so many people claim that they dream of being hobbits, living in the Shire. That they dream of living in Bag End, wandering down to the Green Dragon. Well, so much for them. As for me, ever since these movies came out my dream has been to be a Man of Gondor. To stand on the walls of Minas Tirith, wearing the white and sable of the Citadel. To know that that the kind and good folk of the West are all behind me, and that perhaps I can do some small part to defend them from the darkness in the East. There is a certain strength in knowing that, upon you, the hammer-stroke will fall the hardest. A certain power in knowing that the Enemy hates you the most, simply for the good your ancestors did. A temptation to stand on the white walls and say to the blackness: is that the best you've got?

At that sound the bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before: Arise, arise, Riders of Theoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered, a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! With that he seized a great horn from Guthlaf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains. Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! Suddenly the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them. Éomer rode there, the white horsetail on his helm floating in his speed, and the front of the first éored roared like a breaker foaming to the shore, but Théoden could not be overtaken. Fey he seemed, for the battle-fury of his fathers ran like new fire in his veins, and he was borne up on Snowmane like a god of old, even as Oromë the Great in the battle of the Valar when the world was young. His golden shield was uncovered, and lo! it shone like an image of the Sun, and the grass flamed into green about the white feet of his steed. For morning came, morning and a wind from the sea; and the darkness was removed, and the hosts of Mordor wailed, and terror took them, and they fled, and died, and the hoofs of wrath rode over them. And then all the host of Rohan burst into song, and they sang as they slew, for the joy of battle was on them, and the sound of their singing that was fair and terrible came even to the City.

The contrast between the Rohan themes at Edoras and Pelennor Fields is honestly breathtaking. It starts as a very slow, almost melancholy theme. And yet, Theoden returns to lucidity and begins to lead again, showing that even in the despair imposed by Saruman's assault, there is hope that they can rebuild. Then at Pelennor, the entire theme changes to a triumphant battle call, showing Rohan in the full glory and martial might it was meant to be.

All Hail Theoden King of Horse Lords and Great Among MEN!! “The bent shape of the king sprang suddenly erect. Tall and proud he seemed again; and rising in his stirrups he cried in a loud voice, more clear than any there had ever heard a mortal man achieve before. Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden! Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter! Spears shall be shaken, shields be splintered, A sword day, a red day, ere the sun rises! Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! With that he seized a great horn from Guthláf his banner-bearer, and he blew such a blast upon it that it burst asunder. And straightaway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains. Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor! Suddenly, the king cried to Snowmane and the horse sprang away. Behind him his banner blew in the wind, white horse upon a field of green, but he outpaced it. After him thundered the knights of his house, but he was ever before them ..."
