If all the worlds mile record holders competed against each other today, with compensations for track composition, shoes diet, training techniques etc,Herb Elliot would still be number one.He was phenomenal. He used to start his "kick" towards the end of the 3rd lap and keep on accelerating to the finishing line.To knock 3 seconds of the world record, then,on that track was utter genius and shear hard training by his coach, Percy Cerutty .Wonderful.

I must agree. However, another yardstick to judge the best miler ever is to look at their competitive record. Elliott never, ever, lost a race at one mile or 1500 meters. Just can't get better than than...can only ever tie it!

What a race in the country of my birth! Shame we can't see the whole race once again! I only ran 4mins 7.5secs but I so wish I'd travelled over to run in the Irish champs both track and country!

What is not mentioned in this video is that Herb Elliot was only 20 years of age in this race when he broke the World Record for the mile. 3:54.5 on a cinders track in 1950s low tech running shoes at that age is amazing.

Even this late in the day I'd gladly swop a finger for a good view of that race. Seriously.
