I worked as a valet Parker at Trump Marina In Atlantic City… circa 2004-2005.. our minimum wage was 5.05 an hour.. and we only had to claim $125 in tips weekly… I thought that was a bit much until I was pulling that and more every other night … hell on a slow night I walked away with like $75. I see why the base pay is so low.. because imagine if valet Parker’s were making 18.50 an hour plus tips.. you know what would happen then? *No One* would tip.. trust me . The average Americans mindset shows that. The whole premise that I’ve been programmed about tipping is … *YOU TIP BASED OFF THE SERVICE OF THE WAITER OR WAITRESS* 🌕

Having said what I said about tipping, I would love for it to cease. If an establishment hires a person, I feel it's their responsibility to pay a decent wage. They pay low wages, which helps them turn a better profit, while depending on customers to help the employee earn decent money. I was a waitress back when I was in high school. I didn't stay long because I was poor and needed stable income. Thankfully, there were other jobs available that did pay, at least, minimum wage at that time.

I've never worked in the service industry where I relied on tips but I just learned something about racial bias as it relates to tipping. Hearing that black workers were tipped less and people are more likely to tip people of their own racial caste isn't shocking to me. I've always felt that black people were short changed at every opportunity. I remember in college you would by your text books which were expensive and at the end of the semester you could sell them back but they really didn't give you much if you tried to sell them back to the bookstore. A lot of students would either keep their books or sell them independently by posting bulletins around campus so that they could get more money. The universities were ripping us off by selling us books that were extremely marked up and then only wanting to give us back a few dollars so that they could turn around and resell the books for a much higher price to other students. A group of black students did a social experiment to show the difference in what black students were getting back vs their white counterparts. White students received more money back for their books and so black students started getting their white friends to resell their books back to the bookstores.

They then began to call me Black. I AM THE "American", Indians they called us and all these foreigners are squatting on my land. I paid a handsome price for that meal, I should enjoy. The restaurant owes their staff. I already paid. Where is my money going? I've seen waiters who make more than me, to the point that tips are supposed to be taxable, I wonder how that is calculated, while I pay taxes without tips. My ancestors worked for free. It was my ancestors after slavery who were the wait staff who were paid nothing and lived on caucasoid tips. Many times my people can't get a job in an upscale restaurant or it's the only job they can get. They should leave. I don't see any "Black" owned restaurants in my country. They can all close their doors and flee back to their homeland. Gews who's ancestors got unalived are getting paid. Pretendians who are not Americans at all, are getting bank, while those same caucasoids who didn't want to end slavery don't want to pay reparations. I tip very well for good service because I appreciate the good service. Basic service, basic tip. Good service. Good tip. What I dislike is when gratuity is automatically added in. In that case, that's all they get. It's ironic that if gratuity wasn't automatic, I'd tip more than what was added. If you said you're taking x amount, that's all you get from me. I prefer a choice in how much to give. Also, if service is exceptional, I'll ask the wait person if the restaurant pools tips. If so, I'll give the wait person extra on the side. I also tip food delivery people because I think about them using their own car, gas, and I live on the third floor. I feel like they deserve a nice tip and I also tell them I appreciate them.

@@leecarole1 I'm sorry I became angry with you. I was reminded of something that happened several years ago now. Whenever I tip, I *ALWAYS* do so based upon the service I received. Sometimes it might be more, sometimes it might be less. On one occasion, when I was out with some friends, a new member of the group criticized me for "not tipping enough", as he deemed it. Up until that experience, I'd been completely oblivious and innocent about the concept of tipping [meaninglessly] - I'd just done so based on how I was treated and how the experience was. But this new "friend", had the audacity to suggest that I should be tipping something in the order of 10% or some meaningless arbitrary amount, as though that was "normal". To this day I remain offended at his remarks, and STILL haven't received an apology. Ruined a perfectly harmonious sense of being genuine that did.

The Nowak III tip study 2018, demonstrated Blacks do tip less than non Blacks. In my other comment, I cited informal reports from my Black friends in the industry. I left out their race over there but upon further reading, I thought it was important to include. Another concern with studies that rely on the subjects self reporting, is their tendency to under report their income to avoid tax burdens and to keep income under limits that would exclude them from government subsidies. People don't want to lose their Section 8 or EBT. A study that ignores these realities is not complete.

But when I do get good service or I like the persons personality then I tip. When it comes to ordering online like Walmart for groceries & you're already paying a service fee & delivering fee tripping is a bit much in eyes but my husband is much nicer than me & he likes to tip no matter what. Overall im cool with tipping when it's not expected of me.

This is absurd. You tip if you want to tip, you don’t overtip out of personal insecurities, and if you’re in the service industry talk to your thieving employer who pushes customers to tip whether they want to or not(in some cases, adding the tip into the bill) . I am in the baby boom generation, we made at least $100. In tips a night in an average restaurant, we dont pool our tips, it was our money, we earned it. Nowadays, restaurants pay less than minimum wage and makes employees pool THIER tips which they receive in THIER paychecks, thats greed.

I’m sorry, did you just intellectualize and justify why some people are really cheap and don’t respect restaurant workers? I am white and I have bartended in some very nice restaurants over the years here in NYC, the Hamptons, and Fire Island. Middle class and wealthy black people tip VERY generously and are extremely pleasant and courteous! And yes, on the lower socioeconomic end the overwhelming majority of black people are horrendous tippers. By friend owns a restaurant in Atlanta that specializes in quality affordable family dining and many of their African American clients can be very challenging for the waiters to deal with. They seem wholly unburdened by the fact that their demanding services they have no intention of compensating the worker for. But I really doubt it has anything to do with some historical injustices or racism. They screw over black waiters and bartenders just as badly as white. I don’t know how much of this video is genuine or honestly framed. But even if it’s 100% accurate The fact waiters and bartenders make money from tips is a GOOD thing regardless of the origin of its purpose. A good waiter in a good restaurant can make well over $25-50 an hour in tips. A restaurant could NEVER afford to pay a waiter $30 an hour and eliminating tips will do two things: raise the price of food and drinks (something that’s been happening anyway) and lower the money a waiter makes. ALSO disempower the customer to lower or withdraw the tip if service is unsatisfactory. Videos like this are made by people who do not understand the restaurant business.
