fire snake makes such a difference! being able to expand the rail to push it back in place. you have to keep the battery warm or it will lose its charge in the cold. you do not want a discharged battery when you need to tighten the bolts at the joint. great job, sorry you had to do it all by yourself self. it is great to have helping hands, or paws! say hi to Mr. Freddy! and the pups too.

Dave, another great video! Your fire snake reminding me of the open flame track heaters I saw down in Cumberland Maryland on CSX at a junction near downtown in the 1980’s. They had open fire heaters in the winter likely to heat the switches to keep them clear of ice. That junction still had a mechanical lever interlocking system and tower with ground mounted pipelines and racks. Wonderful old heritage technology. All you KZbinrs out there, if you get discouraged and need motivation, watch this man! 70 years old, a track maintenance man and he LOVES IT. This is brutal thankless work and Dave eats it up! This is the muscle and brute work which powers America! Dave, love your IR impact torque wrench! It’s a hoss! You are and inspiration to us old guys, live long and prosper!!🖖 Randy Wyoming, DE

I watch something similar just the other day when we had the temps drop to below 0 here. The guys down on the CSX rail line by my house were replacing the rail clamps. But they had this neat tool that look like 2 c-clamps on a rod. They clamped the rail on both sides, then screwed a drawbar to squeeze the ends together. I was pretty cool, but even at 0 degrees, those guys were still sweating it out. I take my hat off to railroad guys, y'all are a different breed.
@ccrx67009 күн бұрын
That could have been a gauge rod or a gauge puller This Ole Sign Guy. If it had a ratchet in the center and clamped over the top of the rail it was a gauge puller. Why is this contagious. Never get tired of seeing this essential work. Something most people take for granted. Always like to see you work. Hopefully there is someone in the wings to replace you when you eventually retire.

If that rail had been warm I could have pulled it with the drift pin Richard but rail was too cold and cold rail don't pull good. Mr. Snake pulled it tho! Someday I'll do a time lapse of the rail coming together with the snake, that might be a cool video?

Great job, dave. One day on the job, I had a bad pull apart. So I had the simplex rails stretcher on the jiont. I had the fire snake on it. I had our backhoe at the job site. I used the backhoe back bucket to hit the top of the railhead. I got it. I did like how I did it, but it worked. Come to find out, it was the only jiont. It was on the front of the stock rail at this turnout and about 400' of welded rail. I came back in the spring, and I saw 2 more jionts in front of this stock rail jiont on that weld rail. That fixed the problem for good. Be safe out there. I am pulling for you.

@ccrx6700 completely understandable. Now your job is to pass on your knowledge to the next generation. All of the tricks and best practices. You teach them what you have learned. So much knowledge is lost because there is no systematic way of passing it on. Sadly, that does not serve the company well because the next generation has to learn for themselves what you already know.

The Fire snake seems to work very well. Have you ever thought of putting bolts in each end of the separated rails and using a hydraulic come-along to close the gap? Great video as usual!
@ccrx670014 күн бұрын
They make a hydraulic rail puller which is awesome Nolan, but we don't have one. It clamps on the rail and doesn't use bolt holes. Thank you for taking the time to watch and may you have a very good day my friend.

Hi Dave, sorry I have been absent for a moment. Hope you guys had a happy new year out in coal country. There was an interesting train incident by me in Dec. Look up Cuyahoga National Railroad derailment in Ohio. No one hurt and all the cars stood upright off the tracks. I love your use of that 16 pound persuader.
