Twenty wagons were taken off at a time, not two as I state in the video.

Thank you for the tour, Alan. That inclined railway monument does certainly convey a very powerful message: Here was the last stop on earth for so many. Only death awaited the victims.

I think being there when I was there really highlighted it for me - despite many earlier visits. The heat, similar to that of 1942 but I had access to water...

If anyone is interested there is an interview of one of the camp gaurds and workers named Franz Suchomel. Its very revealing and interesting. It was filmmed for the series shoa.
@HistoryonYouTubeАй бұрын
Lanzmann promised Suchomel that he would not reveal his name but then he put it in anyway - however Suchomel died in 1980, three years before Shoah was released. The interview was done in Hitler's birthplace of Braunau am Inn.
@johnwright291Ай бұрын
@@HistoryonKZbin a few people thought it was staged but I could see no evidence of that. Yeah thats interesting that it was in Branau on the Inn. I know the spelling is wrong. I plan to visit.

@@johnwright291 Suchomel was a good witness. Kurt Franz had a go at him for testifying against him at the Dusseldorf Treblinka Trial when he gave an interview around 1994.
@johnwright291Ай бұрын
@@HistoryonKZbin its just unbelievable what kurt franz got away with but he served his entire sentence so there was nothing anyone could do about it. They called him the doll. Actually i was mistaken. He was released early from a life sentence. Ridiculous. I saw that interview Alan of franz that is but it wasn't translated.

Thank you for showing us these places as they are now. Watching old films, it is easy to think they just disappeared post war, but people live there and still do. Very pretty area, I can’t imagine living in a home the Germans used for such horrible atrocities. I have a friend whose last name is/was Auschwitz. At least on FB it is now Au. I don’t know if he changed it or just shorted it for social media. Certain names would be hard to carry around, they leave a bad connotation.

Thanks for this informative video. One thing that would be helpful is for us to be able to read the placards. Those placards at the memorial included maps of the area. It would have been awesome if we could read them.

My biggest surprise was travelling by train between Bielsko-Biala/Krakow on business when the train pulled up at Oświęcim main station (not in the camp!)and the penny eventually dropping - eery.

Yes, it is a normal town and has a large chemical works - the same one that was once Bune Werke.
@lorenzbroll101Ай бұрын
@@HistoryonKZbin Yep. The whole area was just a concentration camp - most just think it's those iconic buildings. I never visited the place for some reason, although some of my friends did. I think such a place needs thorough research like you do before going in order to respect the scale of horrors.

I watched Shoah. When they were doing an interview with a farmer in the village of Treblinka there was numerous cattle cars on a track in the background. They looked like thecars used in the transportation of victims. Do you know if there were train cars kept in the village after the war? As some type of remembrance or memorial?
@HistoryonYouTubeАй бұрын
No, none of the cars are there but those used for the victims must have been used for many years after the war. Wagons have the dates of manufacture on them.
@jules5394Күн бұрын
Shalom...One cattle car from a station from the death camps was brought to America and was carefully restored. The cattle car was then transported to different states for educational purposes and to visually show the younger generations of school children how millions of innocent people were transported to these camps of suffering, disease, starvation and systematic death. Thank you Alan for your research, your videos and for giving an account of history that must never be allowed too be forgotten. Best Wishes from Northern Ireland ✡️

@HistoryonYouTubeАй бұрын
Yes, I spoke to them, one even invited me round! I think I recognised his father in one of the clips as the likeness was very strong. Lanzmann's team gave one franc pieces as souvenirs and I was shown the one they got!

Thank you, Alan 👍. The former station is on the other side of the new asphalt road then, not at the side of the railway station memorial. I didn't know this. The still of this video and other images of the station show the sign of a ticket office. You mention the purpose of the building in this video was the booking process. However, both buildings look very different (the roof and windows for example) and two ticket offices doesn't seem logical. I'm a bit confused. Does war-era footage exist of the house in your video? I'm curious

The photograph used in the thumbnail is the booking hall shown in the video. Maybe I could put them both on the Facebook page.
