I was in elementary school and they had a lady come in to teach us about different percussion instruments they use around the world and this was my favorite one

Rain stick is a large stick that makes the sound of rain if you turn it upside down. It has beans and pebbles. They are covered so that they won’t fall out

Another audio-based therapy that one might look into is "gong therapy"-- Thanks for posting this; the rainstick creates an indubitably soothing sound.

The rain stick is technically a tubular crotal bell. See Fadul's Encyclopedia of Bells.

i have one that is about 24 inches long and i use it when I'm playing salsa and latin jazz music on the radio. Fun when i used it to play on the bobby mcferin and richard bona improvisational video

You have to shake it a certain way or it get confused with rattle snakes
