CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After screening a video statement from his client's dead son, Rudy (Matt Damon) appeals to the jury to "do what's right."
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Francis Ford Coppola is both scripter and director of this drama adapted from the John Grisham novel about broke, inexperienced Memphis law-school graduate Rudy Baylor (Matt Damon), ready to take any job he can find. Signing on with slimy Bruiser Stone (Mickey Rourke), he learns ambulance-chasing tactics from Bruiser's leg man Deck Schifflet (Danny DeVito) and meets battered teen Kelly Riker (Claire Danes), abused by her husband (Andrew Shue). Baylor has his own clients -- friendly Miss Birdie (Teresa Wright), who has a large estate to dispose of, and desperate Dot Black (Mary Kay Place), whose son Donnie Ray (Johnny Whitworth) has terminal leukemia. Medical intervention could have spared his life, but the Great Benefit Insurance Company denied coverage, preventing Donnie Ray from getting a life-saving bone marrow transplant. Rudy finds a place to live in the apartment behind Miss Birdie's house. Deck and Rudy split from Bruiser to start their small firm. When they take on the Blacks' case, they go up against the insurance company's high-priced law firm and are continually thwarted by slick lawyer Leo F. Drummond (Jon Voight). Rudy's voiceover narration was scripted by Michael Herr. Filmed on location in Memphis.

This movie inspired me to become a lawyer. It has been a rough road but when you find empathy for your clients who need your help you find purpose.

I don't think I will forget forget how Buddy shows the CEO of the insurance company the picture of Donny. I am impressed that the most memorable part of the movie to me is the one character that hadn't said a word so far, say his only line. "why?"

Youre somewhat right but we cannot rely on an incompetent bureaucracy either. There should be fast track enforcement of legit claims

I remember a lot more witty dialogue in the book. When Rudy attempts to continue without a license, Drummond makes it a point to deny this and claims that passing the bar exam isn't a "big deal" - Rudy roasted Leo's law firm in return, saying it was a "big deal" for a classmate that planned to work for Drummond but failed the exam.

Wow... Matt Damon had a very good closing statement, there. He didn't even need to have any sweeping dramatic statement like so many other laywers have in the past in movies. I think his last statement, 'If you don't punish Great Benefits, you could be their next victim. That is all...'.. that was all he needed to say.

That would be an improper closing argument. You are not allowed to say anything that suggests jurors will be personally affected by their decision.

Just saw this movie on tv. Great movie. I was wondering though, wouldn't great Benefit as the defendant be allowed to go last (after Ruby)with their closing statement?

HI there. I have only read the book, and I have yet to see the movie, so I'm not sure how the movie portrays it, but in actual courtrooms the plaintiff (here, the Blacks) get to speak last. The plaintiff makes an argument, the defense makes an argument, and the plaintiff is permitted the final word with a rebuttal argument. This is because the plaintiff always has the burden of proof.

My Lawyers fought for my deceased son, and miracles do happen, they got what I wanted. Anything else that becomes from the next phase is bonus for me, and it sets a precedent for future similar cases. My Lawyer was once a kid fresh out of law school that knocked on the door of a new two lawyer only firm with his resume, and they gave him a chance. Now he is this attorney that has become a force to be reckoned with in court. 🙏

As soon as the verdicts were read, The judge should have immediately frozen all the assets of that insurance company if possible. Not one of its employees should get one damned cent!! If the company couldn't pay, each of the defendants should lose their house(s) and everything they own!!!
