40 years later and nothing is as sharp intense as this. I do believe the ramones also enabled electronic disco music to become a much darker,faster, more psychedelic, intense and part of the undeground. This guys broke a lot of boundaries

I was lucky enough to go to over 30 Ramones concerts in my life. And when it was over it was like you went through a war and your head was completely traumatized. Your ears rang until the next day 4 up to 48 hours. It was a cathartic experience like no other. They didn't sound like a band. They sounded like an orchestra. It was a total, full, powerful sound that lifted you up I made you feel like you were literally floating on air. There will never ever be nothing even close to what a Ramones concert was like.

I cant agree. 1980...The Clash had been playing live now for over 2 years, with live shows that equalled or surpassed the energy here. Dont get me wrong, I saw the Ramones live at The Electric Circus in Manchester and they were brilliant. But this is a French audience - completely different to a UK crowd. Seeing the RAMONES as a teenager in the early 80s was the time of my life!!! Jeezus, Marky's drumming is friggin' PERFECT. Dee Dee was always my favorite. We would ALWAYS get in position by Dee Dee's side of the stage before the show would start! I literally had his sweat hit me, and he once handed me a bass PICK that I still have, and that I cherish. Later, in the early 90s, I met Dee Dee and got a chance to chat with him. He was SO nice, SO friendly.

That's awesome man! I've heard the real true punks would position themselves on Dee Dee's side of the stage. Wish I could have seen them. I didn't get into the Ramones until High School, but that was the late 90's after they had broken up.
@godfatherNYC

Lee DeMarco Thanks, it was TRULY amazing seeing them back then. (One thing to remember is that there were NOT 50 million punk bands then, like a Warped Tour, or anything. No internet. You heard by word of mouth or the local Indie News Paper that the bands you like were coming to town! And it was NOT like everyone at your school liked or even knew who the Ramones (or Minor Threat, Misfits, Etc.) even were! At my school in D.C. (quite literally the school where Minor Threat went- like 2 years ahead of me) there were 1600 students. I'd say at most 20 were punks!) Those days were SO much fun, it's hard to describe. Most of my Ramones tickets say $10 on them. My Clash Ticket says $7. Haha crazy! Have a great day, and I'm glad you're a Ramones fan! There are a lot of other fun bands to enjoy these days, and I hope you have a ton of fun out there at the shows.

godfatherNYC Thats so cool. I am not so much into the punks bands of today, but very much into the punk bands of the late 70's and early 80's. Ramones are my all time favorite band. I don't care if people consider them a punk band or a rock band, they were tremendous. I just wish I could have been old enough to go to their shows in their prime, I would have been at every one. Did you go to any Danzig era Misfits shows? That is the REAL Misfits, as you know for sure. Nice talking to you...
@godfatherNYC
@godfatherNYC 9 жыл бұрын
Lee DeMarco Dude, I JUST barely missed seeing the original Misfits with Danzig. I even remember the flyer for their show in D.C. where I lived then, it was with Necros and Government Issue at the Wilson Center. I already liked them but I was just a LITTLE bit too young to actually attend one of their shows. These shows were the REAL DEAL. They were in VERY dangerous parts of town and being really young it was honestly pretty scary to go to punk shows. I mean, it was NOT like it is now. (I did see the very first "Danzig" band tour in '89 in a small club in D.C. and that was phenomenal.)

godfatherNYC You are so right. Back in the 70's and 80 when this concert was, I only had heard the name Ramones. I know no one at my high school were fans. What we listened to was Kiss, The Cars, Peter Frampton. Now that I look back, I feel we were cheated from not getting exposure to the Ramones both on MTV or Radio.

Glen Danzig of The Misfits was at another Shrine show looking for horror movie stuff too. Back in those days it was amazing who you could run into. For all the musicians that think The Ramones were scrubs - I challenge any of you GIT grads to just try and play this for an hour and see if you can. The Ramones were always tight and professional and always gave 100% and always a great show. Just being able to endure their pace without breaks to sip your wine spritzer -good luck! I was lucky enough to see them in the late 1970's with both Tommy and Marky - both were great timekeepers and Johnny never missed a note. DeeDee played exactly what the songs needed, if he had tried to be Stanley Clarke the whole thing would fall apart - that's what musicians just don't understand. The Ramones changed thousands of peoples lives, and made thousands of us start our own bands, instead of alienating us musically like the Prog-Rock bands ended up doing.

@@jduff591985-1990 is considered to be their weakest period, due to the heavier sound and playing too fast, but yes you are right Joey had alot of stamina, you need endurance because to stand, on stage for 60-70 minute's singing, in that pace one thing i noticed, is that Joey sang so fast that he would often, skip certain lyric's because it was too fast for him.

One of the greatest mysteries of music history is why the Ramones never got the commercial success that they clearly deserved. Seymour Stein bringing in Phil Spector to produce EOTC was the closest they got. An unbelievable band who will still be adored in generations to come. They left nothing on the field ever and thats the best compliment you could give them posthumously. Saw them in London twice, my favourite show was the Sire Records showcase at the Roundhouse where they smoked the Talking Heads off stage. R.I.P. guys you made our younger years shine like diamonds!!!

Most bands that are extremely influential have never gotten recognition. Its a very well established fact. With the exception of anyone before the seventies, albeit some other exceptions there as well. Most of these artists never got recognition until years later. The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, The MC5, The New York Dolls, The Modern Lovers, The Ramones, Big Star, The Replacements, Husker Du, Red Kross, ESG, Meat Puppets, Egyptian Lover... I can go on. But the point is that this is sadly the way that our musical culture is built, someone finds the formula then applies it to what they are doing and just get lucky or they just happen to hit it at the right time. I think with the Ramones It was a case where the majority of the buying public was not ready and thus not their fault (the charts where full of Paisley Underground, Catchy New Wave and Hair Metal bands). But with time, people, because of other artists embracing them and influencing their own music finally got the ear for the sound, hence: everyone wearing Ramones shirts in the late Nineties which they probably bought at Hot Topic, long after the band disbanded. It's sad but true, but not a mystery at all brother, its happened since rock and roll was a thing. And oh yeah, Green Day and Nirvana.

Commercial success is overrated and it's mostly americans who are obsessed with it and how much money blah blah blah who cares ? It's art, I don't give a fuck if they don't have "commercial success", i prefer it, everything corporate america touches turns to shit..

What made the Ramones truly special and separated them from the pack was their elaborate song structures, with deep, pondering lyrics riffing on the plight of man, and elongated guitar solos featuring complex chord layering & progressions. Moreover, how the drummer was able to incorporate the timing & syncopation of his immense drum-kit without overpowering the rhythm section was supremely vital as well.

@@franksmith4277 I know man, it's so funny when people try to act like these are great players. This shit is so easy to play on bass, and you can't hear him any fuckin way. I love punk rock, but I'm aware that it was not about instrumental virtuosity, it was good songs and energy. It's like in the 70s if you loved KISS you had to say Peter Criss was the best drummer, which he was NOT. Non-players are funny, man.
