I think it would be better if both were accurate, the murder-minds could have enslaved the xenos Rangdan species and then as the war begins between the slaves and the legions they gradually worm their way into the consciousness of some of the legions utilising parts of their legionary ethos against them. I think that would be the most realistic reason as to why the war lasted so long and was so bloody, a tough and massive enemy army that acts like a hive and a Legion being corrupted and turning traitor dealing massive damage to imperial assets and legions. It would go a very long way to explain why so many Legions, particularly the wolves, were drawn in. I envisage a very powerful alien Empire that sees initial success because of a sneak attack or strike followed up by a massive invasion which is then counter attacked by the legions and pushed backwards only to be rekindled by the traitors in a Legion. That set of events could lead to the Emperor recognising the war was already bloody enough needing to end it rapidly for fear that more legions could be turned against the imperium. Would make a lot of sense...

According to my Noosphere capture of the Oculata Imperator; the Randang events didn't just wipe out two legions, they did something so naughty that they had to be removed from history books. For comparison; the traitor legions falling to chaos and much of Lorgars arguments for worshipping the warp are still in official records, if you know where to look. The two missing primarchs didn't just turn on the Imperium. Because mere treason isn't enough to get you removed from the history books. Whatever happened was considered so foundationally pantshitting that too many people knowing it happened could unravel the Imperium. The abilities of the Slaugh, Russ' executioner style involvement, Malcadors fear of just hearing a primarchs name and Sanguinius later fear of revealing the red thirst 'because precedent' suggest that a combination turning, treason, and a legion supernatural ability led to some sort of contagious information arising. A cognitohazard so dangerous that it makes demonic possession look like a bedtime story by comparison. And I, Lexmechanic Robert Bibliotheca have uncovered it! The secret is... Ia! Ia! The fact that both Malcador and the Emperor agreed they could bring back dead primarchs from the dead, only not doing it during the Horus Heresy cause they were so busy, AND that the Emperor amd Malcador also said they could redeem fallen primarchs given enough time, means that theres a good chance that unlike say, Horus who was corrupted, or even the entirety of the traitor primarchs, these two just, rebelled against the Imperium, maybe even under moral repulsion to the many other xenocides, and the emperor got so mad, specially since this could remind him of all the perpetual friends he lost one after another, and thought that this could lead to more primarchs wanting to rebel against him, just like more and more of his friends left him, that he believed the best way to keep their ideas from spreading was a full on cover up, hell, we know when given the memories of his two brothers back, Dorn said "If they were here, the war would be lost already", so maybe they would have made a 3rd faction that was against both the imperium and chaos and guaranteed no winner through such split forces

I’ve been trying to set out a version of these events where one of the two legions gets corrupted by the murder minds and fights alongside a rangdan xeno race, betraying both the other lost legion and the dark angels (the three legions initially involved that I have dubbed the Honour bound as all three are obsessed with their honour) and leading to the involvement of more legions and the outbreak of further conflict. My idea eventually is that the loyal lost legion use an Ability that is not unlike those of the blood angels to defeat much of the betrayer Legion, however, in doing so they are also branded heretics (mainly by Russ). This would really support sanguinius’ later fear of revealing his legions strangeness, and the backstab would go a long way to explaining the losses suffered by the 1st Legion. Have about 25,000 words thus far but it could easily be more than one book (I’m just doing this for fun and passion) If you’re bothered I’d love to get more info on the conflict so I can incorporate it.

My own head cannon is that one of the Lost Primarchs was either killed or lost during the Rangdan Xenocides. The names for the two Lost Primarch are "The Forgotten" and "The Purged". Especially because of the interaction in Fear to Tread between Sanguinius and Horus, when the Angel kills one of his own sons for falling to the Red Thirst. Sanguinius references the fate of the one Lost Primarchs as a reason as to why he hasn't sought the Emperor's help in curing the issue with the Blood Angels geneseed. I suspect that this refers to one of the Lost Primarch's Legion suffering from a geneseed mutation or malfunction which crippled his Legion, and those it affected were killed, and whatever was left of the untainted surviving Space Marines being absorbed into the Ultramarines. This would explain the reference, "The Purged". Also this would tie into the Space Wolves being the Emperors Executioners, and the reference Russ made to having fought another Legion before. I believe it was Russ and the Wolves who were sent to find out the extent of the geneseed mutation, and kill any of those who showed any signs of corruption. I also believe it was the 11th Legion and Primarch, who was taken away to become Project XI in the cells beneath the Imperial Palace after his Legion was basically removed from history to cover up the possibility that Space Marines could become corrupted. "The Forgotten", I believe is the Primarch that either fell under the influence of the Rangdan, and he and his Legion fought alongside them, being wiped out. Or that the Primarch, died during the Xenocide, and it was considered such devastating news to the Imperium that a Primarch could be killed by a Xenos race, that the Big E basically made everyone forget about it, including other Primarchs, and the surviving Space Marines, if there were any, were absorbed into the Ultramarines. This was the 2nd Primarch and his Legion.

First off: great video, and an excellent summary of what we know about it. However, I do have a small problem with your theorycrafting: we know from The First Heretic that the Word Bearers played a major role in dealing with the 11th Primarch at least, and we also know that the Word Bearers weren't involved with the Rangdan Xenocides. So while the Slaugh may have corrupted/convinced the 2nd Legion and their Primarch, the can't have done the same to the 11th Legion and theirs.

@@mattkennedy9308 During their trip into the Eye of Terror, when Argel Tal and the rest of the Serrated Suns command unit are in the Emperor's laboratory, they stop in front of the 11th Primarch's tube and Argel Tal goes to destroy it, and Xaphen tells him not to, but doing it would save them personally a lot of trouble in the long run.

I have a theory: The Rangdan were, if my lore-digging has served me correctly, known to be somehow a "parasitic" species. This is just about all I can find on them. With Paradox's new Stellaris release being Necrophages (xenos that can turn other xenos into themselves) I think that the Rangdan may have been something similar. They probably turned some humans and space marines into Rangdan and thats why they were so successful against the Imperium, they could turn it against itself more or less. Plus it would make sense why they not only had to be completely exterminated, but all knowledge about them had to be removed to prevent anyone from attempting to recreate them for any reason.

​@@godofdarknes firstly not much different. the nids consume organic matter, turn that into soldiers and use prefered genetic traits to perfect their soldiers to the threat at hand. and secondly the nids already do that directly with the genestealers: they infect people in a world (either psykically or through the usage of a parasitic sub-species) and "convince" them to worship a psyker broodlord and to give birth to more nids. once the planet is all mind controlled or composed of nids a branch of the nid fleet arrives and consumes the world with little resistance. i can see the tyranid hive fleet being able to make a nid powerful enough to infect and start an uprising in a space marine chapter given enough time and genetic information so if they happened to somehow consume or gain access to the genetic makeup of a primarch i can see an early scout fleet of tyranids becoming an actual threat to the imperium (with a "primarch" nid easily gaining access to the psykic collective of a chapter whose DNA they stole)

They literally inject DNA into a person Brainwashing them into thinking the genestealer is a godlike being that should be worshiped and any children born from those people will either be almost indistinguishible from the host species or genestealers, all psykically connected to the original genestealer who will grow in size and power becoming a "patriarch". If a genestealer somehow managed to infect a space marine and said SM took the genestealer to his homeworld it is possible that over time he would either infect more sm, their accolytes or spread the mutation through the geneseed. (That would mean that the sm legion would have to be very VERY unaware though.) They did it with several human worlds and even an eldar craftworld. And necrophages are literally tyranids as they just turn one target pop into one of your own pops. you can imagine it as placing eggs in other people to birth your young, infecting them Borg or goa'uld style into becoming one of you, or consuming them and using their biomass to replicate. All of which either chaos or the nids do. although SM goa'uld (Maybe the legion used the ghoul star devices to extend their lives and increase their power) would by kind of a cool concept...

When GW says 100s of thousands of guardsmen for a major galactic campaign I assume that means 100s of thousands of regiments. To be fair from the adeptus administratums point of view moving a whole regiment requires less paperwork then moving a single soldier so it makes sense that they would just use guardsmen and guardsmen regiment interchangabley.

The only objection that I would state to the two unknown primarchs being traitors is the short story where malcador takes down their statues. The other primarchs show genuine affection towards their Lost Brothers and bewilderment to the decision which I don't think would take place if they were traitors.

they're not necessarily traitors. its enough that they didnt agree to exterminate the rangdan making the last battle one between brothers forced to do battle by their father, were killed themselves in the war or changed somehow by it. i can see how extreme mutation or simply death in combat would be enough to expunge them from history as the primarchs are supposedly perfect, imortal and would represent the top evolution of humanity.

Would love to see the rangdan reappear from the void as a new xeno faction. Rangdan depicted as 40k cuthulu is perfect and if they ever come back its what they should be. I don't think the rangdan was a cover up for the 2 lost legions simply because the emperor wouldn't have had to get the void dragon to defeat them. It could be a possibility that the lost legions was helping the Rangdan tho.

Even in just the US, where most places have accepted that some people are gay, there are other places that are little better than certain parts of the Middle East on this. I've heard stories from gay guys who grew up in bible belt small towns that just make you want to bomb those places into oblivion to delete the people who apparently live there. One guy from some town in Kentucky had others from his highschool pin him down, put a rope around his neck and drag him a bit down a road with their car. All because it had come out that he is gay. He refuses to go back even to see family now. Or at least, that was his sentiment when I last spoke to him a little over 10 years ago.

I think the Rangdan Xenocides took out the 11th Primarch but there's heavy lore implication that uncorrupted elements of his Legion got sent to the Fists and Ultramarines. I like the idea the Rangdan had mutagenic weapons so they killed huge amounts of the Imperial forces but triggered a defect in the 11th Legion hence them needing elements to be Purged by Russ.

More like the Rangdan were one of the missing Primarchs and legion. Since the each Primarch pretty much had a duplicate we are missing the duplicate Psyker primarch to go with Magnus. He could be the head of the powerful Psyker race.
